Claude is the better-documented choice when you want a playable prototype inside the AI product itself. Anthropic documents Artifacts as interactive, self-contained apps that can be edited conversationally, viewed in versions, downloaded, and published for link access. ChatGPT is better documented as a coding workspace: Canvas helps you review, modify, debug, and port code, while ChatGPT code blocks provide JavaScript and HTML labels and previews. The cited OpenAI material does not establish a comparable in-product browser-game runtime.
That is a workflow distinction, not proof that Claude writes better game code. The official material reviewed contains no controlled Claude-versus-ChatGPT test for game quality, bug rate, or completion speed. Your choice should follow the way you want to build, test, and deliver the game.

The practical answer at a glance
For a one-screen game such as Pong, Breakout, Snake, or a clicker, start with Claude if your priority is seeing an interactive artifact, changing it through conversation, and sharing a working version by link. Start with ChatGPT if your priority is a side-by-side code review loop, explicit debugging assistance, or porting code between supported languages.

| Decision point | Claude Artifacts | ChatGPT Canvas and code blocks |
|---|---|---|
| Documented in-product interactivity | Artifacts are described as interactive apps, websites, code, and React components; game-like learning projects are an explicit example. | Canvas is documented as a writing and coding workspace. Code blocks support JavaScript and HTML labels and previews, but the cited help does not promise that a browser game runs inside ChatGPT. |
| Iteration | Ask Claude to modify the artifact, switch versions, and use the documented fix workflow. | Use Canvas shortcuts for review, adding logs or comments, fixing bugs, and porting code. |
| Code access | View the artifact source and download it. | Canvas supports editing and porting; verify the current interface before assuming a particular export path. |
| Sharing | Anthropic documents publishing an artifact for link access until you unpublish it. | The cited OpenAI material does not establish an equivalent game-hosting or public-link workflow. |
| Persistent data and external services | AI-powered artifacts cannot use persistent storage or make third-party API calls, according to Anthropic’s help material. | No equivalent Canvas limitation is established in the cited sources; capabilities depend on the current product surface. |
| Best fit | A self-contained playable prototype that you can show quickly. | A developer-style workspace for inspecting and improving code. |
The table describes documented product behavior, not a ranking of generated code. Both tools can help produce HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; the surrounding workflow determines how much manual setup remains.

Give both assistants the same game brief
A fair comparison starts with one small specification rather than two vague requests. Keep the scope to a single screen and state every behavior that must work. For example:
- A 400-by-600-pixel play area that fits on a laptop and a phone.
- Keyboard controls plus visible touch buttons where practical.
- A score that increases only when the player earns points.
- A Start or Restart control that resets the board, score, and timer.
- Clear win and loss conditions, including what happens after the game ends.
- No external images, libraries, accounts, network calls, or server-side code.
- A short explanation of the controls and a visible status message.
Ask each assistant to keep the implementation in one self-contained file unless the tool requires another arrangement. Request comments around game state, input handling, collision or hit detection, scoring, and reset logic. Those requests make later review easier and expose whether a generated prototype is understandable rather than merely attractive.
Acceptance checklist
Before judging either product, play the same scenarios:
- Load the initial state and confirm that the instructions are visible.
- Start the game twice; the second start must not duplicate timers or event handlers.
- Use every advertised control, including touch controls if supplied.
- Score a point and verify that the displayed value changes once.
- Trigger the loss condition and confirm that movement and scoring stop.
- Press Restart after a win and after a loss; all state must return to its initial values.
- Resize the browser or use a narrow viewport and check that controls remain reachable.
- Open the browser console and look for errors while starting, playing, ending, and restarting.
This is a sensible evaluation method for your own project. It is not a benchmark performed for this comparison.
How the Claude Artifacts workflow works
1. Ask for an artifact, not just an explanation
Anthropic describes Artifacts as a place for self-contained material such as code, websites, and interactive React components. A useful first prompt names the game, the required controls, the state transitions, and the visual constraints. Tell Claude to return a playable artifact and to keep the implementation self-contained. The distinction matters: a prose answer or a code snippet may explain a game without giving you the interactive surface that Artifacts are designed to provide.
2. Iterate in conversation
Once the first version exists, report one observable problem at a time: “The ball passes through the paddle on the left edge,” “Restart leaves the old timer running,” or “The touch button is too small.” Claude’s documented artifact workflow lets you ask for modifications to the existing app rather than pasting the entire source into a new conversation. Ask it to change only the affected behavior and preserve the controls and scoring rules you have already accepted.

3. Use versions and targeted fixes
Artifacts can be switched between versions, and Anthropic’s game-oriented guidance describes conversational iteration and debugging, including a documented fix action. Save a version after each meaningful milestone: first render, controls working, scoring working, and end-state handling. If a later edit breaks a previously working feature, return to the earlier version instead of asking for a wholesale rewrite. This gives a small prototype a practical change history.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Inspect and take the code with you
Anthropic documents viewing artifact code and copying or downloading it. Inspect the source before treating the prototype as finished. Check whether the game loop is started once, whether listeners are removed or reused safely, and whether user input is constrained to the game area. Download a known-good version when you want to continue in a local editor, place the game on your own hosting, or keep an archive independent of the conversation.
5. Publish a link when the prototype is ready
Anthropic documents publishing an Artifact for link access. Viewers can interact with the basic functionality under the current access rules, and access continues until the creator unpublishes the work. Treat a published artifact as a demonstration link rather than a substitute for a production deployment: confirm who can open it, whether the link exposes the latest version, and whether your chosen plan permits the sharing mode you need.
How the ChatGPT Canvas workflow works
1. Open a coding workspace
OpenAI describes Canvas as a side-by-side workspace for writing and coding. Give it the same game brief and ask for a small, readable HTML/CSS/JavaScript implementation. Canvas is useful when you want the source and the conversation visible together, so you can point to a function, a block of state, or a specific behavior without losing the surrounding context.
2. Apply code-focused shortcuts
The documented Canvas shortcuts include reviewing code, adding logs or comments, fixing bugs, and porting code among listed languages. Use review before visual polishing: ask for a pass that checks timer ownership, collision boundaries, keyboard focus, score updates, restart behavior, and cleanup after game over. Then request logs around the failing transition, reproduce the problem, and remove or reduce those logs after the fix.

OpenAI’s current help material describes code blocks with language labels including JavaScript and HTML, supported content previews, and execution of supported Python code. That documentation does not establish that a browser game can be run inside ChatGPT in the same way as an interactive Artifact. Plan to copy the generated HTML, open it in a browser or local development environment, and perform the acceptance checks there unless the interface you are using clearly provides another supported route.

4. Keep portability assumptions modest
The Canvas launch material describes code editing and porting, but it does not by itself establish a present-day export button, public game URL, or hosting service. If you need a file, ask Canvas to present the complete source in a form you can save, then verify the resulting file locally. Check the current UI before documenting a precise download or publishing sequence for other people.
Head-to-head comparison by the questions that matter
Which gives you an interactive result sooner?
Claude has the clearer documented path because an Artifact is itself described as an interactive app or component. You can request a game, make conversational changes, and share a published version. With ChatGPT, the documented strength is code manipulation; the cited sources leave the actual browser execution step to your own environment or to whatever current product feature is available.
Which has the stronger debugging loop?
They support different styles. Claude keeps the artifact as the object being changed and documents a fix-oriented interaction. Canvas keeps the source in a coding workspace and provides review, logging, comments, bug-fixing, and porting shortcuts. Choose the former when you think in terms of visible behavior and the latter when you want to inspect implementation details line by line.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which gives clearer code ownership?
Claude explicitly documents viewing and downloading Artifact code, so its handoff path is clear. Canvas clearly supports editing and porting, but the cited material does not guarantee a particular export workflow today. In either tool, save a working copy yourself and do not rely on a conversation remaining available forever.
Which is easier to show to someone else?
Claude’s documented publish action is designed for link access and remains available until you unpublish. For a ChatGPT-generated game, you should expect to provide the saved file or host it yourself unless your current ChatGPT surface documents a sharing option that meets your needs.
Which produces better game code?
There is no supported winner. The official sources reviewed contain no controlled comparison of Claude and ChatGPT on browser-game correctness, visual quality, completion time, or maintenance. A polished interface can hide a broken restart path, and concise code can still mishandle input focus. Use the same brief and acceptance checklist rather than treating product reputation as evidence.

Access, sharing, and technical limits
Claude plan and platform details can change
Anthropic’s help material indicates that Artifact access and sharing differ by plan and product surface. Mobile behavior, publishing controls, and availability may not match the interface shown in an older guide. Check the current Claude account and platform before promising a feature to a team or audience.
AI-powered Artifacts need the right account capability
Anthropic states that AI-powered artifacts require the feature to be enabled and that users authenticate with their Claude accounts for AI functionality. A published link may therefore behave differently for a signed-in creator, a signed-in viewer, and someone without the required access. Test the exact audience path before distributing the URL.
No persistent storage or third-party API calls in AI-powered Artifacts
Anthropic documents two important constraints: AI-powered artifacts cannot make third-party API calls or use persistent storage. A high-score table, account system, cloud save, live multiplayer service, or remote analytics endpoint therefore cannot be assumed to work. Design a self-contained game with in-memory state, and explain that scores reset when the page or artifact state resets unless you add a separately supported mechanism outside the artifact.
Browser security still applies
Neither assistant removes ordinary browser concerns. A game must handle focus, keyboard shortcuts, touch events, viewport changes, animation timing, and the difference between a fresh load and a restart. Ask for defensive checks and test in the browsers and screen sizes your audience will actually use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to run your own side-by-side trial
- Freeze the specification. Write the game brief and acceptance checklist before opening either assistant.
- Use separate conversations. Start one Claude conversation and one ChatGPT conversation so context from one tool cannot influence the other.
- Send the same first prompt. Request the same screen size, controls, score rules, end states, file constraints, and accessibility requirements.
- Record the first usable result. Note whether you received an interactive artifact, source code, a preview, or instructions for local execution. Do not count a feature that your account does not actually expose.
- Make three identical change requests. For example: add a restart button, make keyboard controls ignore input while the game is over, and add a visible mobile control. Keep the wording and order the same.
- Run the acceptance checklist. Test initial load, controls, scoring, win/loss, restart, resize, and console errors in the same browser where possible.
- Inspect maintainability. Look for named state variables, one game-loop owner, understandable event handling, and comments at the boundaries where future edits are likely.
- Measure only what you can reproduce. Record manual steps, failures, and fixes. Call the result your project test, not a general ranking of the two products.
What the published figures actually mean
Anthropic reported more than half a billion Artifacts created since launch in a June 25, 2025 announcement introducing AI-powered Artifacts. That is a vendor-reported usage count. It does not measure how many were games, how many were completed successfully, or whether Claude generated better code.
OpenAI’s October 3, 2024 Canvas announcement reported a 94% coding-task trigger evaluation result versus 83% for the described prompted GPT-4o baseline, and said Canvas targeted edits performed 18% better than that baseline. These are OpenAI internal evaluations of Canvas behavior. They are not a Claude comparison and not a browser-game quality test, so they should not be converted into a claim that ChatGPT will build your game faster or with fewer bugs.

Prompt patterns that produce testable prototypes
Prompt for an Artifact workflow
Ask for a self-contained game artifact and define the state transitions explicitly:
Build a one-screen browser game called “Dodge the Blocks” as a self-contained interactive artifact. Use plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript unless a React component is required. Include keyboard and visible touch controls, a score that increments once per avoided block, Start and Restart buttons, and explicit Playing, Won, and Game Over states. Stop the animation loop after the game ends. Keep all assets inline, use no network calls or persistent storage, and add short comments around input, the game loop, scoring, collision detection, and reset logic. After creating it, explain how to test each state.
Follow with narrow requests such as “add a pause state without changing scoring” or “fix restart so only one animation loop exists.” Ask for a new version when a change is substantial.
Prompt for a Canvas workflow
Ask for code that is easy to inspect and run outside the chat:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Keep game state in one clearly named object, use one animation-loop function, and add comments at input, collision, scoring, game-over, and reset boundaries. First produce readable code. Then review it for duplicate timers, stale event listeners, focus problems, resize bugs, and score changes after game over. Add temporary logs only where needed and tell me how to remove them.
Save the resulting source, open it in your browser, and use the same acceptance checklist you applied to the Artifact.
Common prototype failures and the useful fix request
| Symptom | Likely cause | Precise follow-up request |
|---|---|---|
| Restart makes the game run faster each time | Each restart creates another timer or animation loop. | “Make restart cancel or reuse the existing loop; prove that only one loop runs.” |
| Score changes after game over | Collision and scoring code runs after the state changes. | “Guard input, movement, and scoring so they execute only in Playing state.” |
| Touch controls work once and then stop | Listeners are replaced, blocked by focus, or attached to a transient element. | “Attach stable pointer handlers and test repeated presses after restart.” |
| Controls scroll the page instead of moving the player | Browser default actions are not prevented. | “Prevent the relevant default touch or key action only while the game has focus.” |
| Objects disappear at the edge | Coordinates use a different scale from the visible play area. | “Use one coordinate system and clamp positions to the playable bounds.” |
| Old score remains after a new game | Reset code clears the display but not the underlying state. | “Reset every state field, then render the initial state from that object.” |
Choose by workflow, not by a claimed quality winner
Choose Claude first when
- You want the shortest documented route from a prompt to an interactive prototype.
- You expect to refine behavior conversationally while keeping the artifact visible.
- You need a documented publish-and-share path for a demonstration.
- You want an explicit view, copy, and download path for the artifact source.
Choose ChatGPT first when
- You prefer a side-by-side coding workspace for reading and editing source.
- You want built-in review, logging, comments, bug-fixing, or porting actions.
- You already have a local browser workflow and need help improving existing code.
- You are comfortable handling the save, run, and hosting steps outside ChatGPT.
Use both without pretending it is a benchmark
You can use one assistant to generate a first draft and the other to review it, but keep the roles clear. Copy the source deliberately, state which requirements are fixed, and rerun the acceptance checklist after every transfer. A second model may identify a bug, but its suggestion still needs to be tested in the browser. The resulting process is a development choice, not evidence that either product universally outperforms the other.
Bottom line
For building and sharing a simple browser-game prototype with the least documented friction, Claude Artifacts has the advantage: Anthropic explicitly positions Artifacts as interactive apps and documents conversational updates, version switching, code access, and publishing. For code-centric collaboration, ChatGPT Canvas offers a clear review and debugging workspace, but the cited OpenAI documentation does not establish an equivalent in-product game runtime or public hosting path. Neither tool has a documented, independent browser-game benchmark proving superior code quality. Use the same tightly specified brief, test every state, and choose the workflow that matches where you want the game to run and who needs to maintain it.
