Anthropic says its Claude text watermark is a version of Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text, not a new watermarking method or a proven technical advance over rivals. Its clearest distinction is the stated breadth of marking across supported Claude models, products, and cloud partners—and the detail it has published about the system’s limits. The watermark can indicate likely Claude involvement, but it cannot prove authorship or establish a text’s full history.

What Anthropic’s Claude watermark does

Claude generates text by selecting among plausible next tokens. Anthropic says its watermark uses a secret key and preceding words to influence the random process used for low-stakes choices. Across a sequence, those choices form a statistical pattern that can be tested by someone with access to the key.

The mark does not add visible text, hidden characters, or extra tokens. Anthropic describes it as a way to estimate whether Claude was involved, not to identify a person, organization, or conversation. The company says its approach is a version of Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text, published in Nature in 2024. That makes the method family a shared design approach, not evidence that Anthropic invented a distinct technique. Anthropic’s August 14, 2026 announcement, updated September 1 explains its implementation and claims.

Where Anthropic’s rollout may go further

Anthropic’s current Help Center describes marking as applying to supported Claude models across Claude products and supported cloud partners, including AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. It says coverage applies wherever those supported models are offered, worldwide. The company’s published model list and rollout notes are the relevant qualifications: some cloud rollout was still scheduled to finish by October 12, 2026, and older models are being updated during a transition period. Consult the current Claude text watermarking support page for the live model and availability details.

That published scope is the most defensible sense in which the system may “go further”: model, product, cloud, geographic, and detector-access coverage, alongside the explanation Anthropic has provided. The available evidence does not establish that its watermark is more robust or accurate than rivals’ systems, and it supplies no verified cross-provider benchmark or detector-accuracy figure. Anthropic reports internal tests with no observed impact on content, creativity, or readability, plus a controlled human-rater study with no observed quality difference; these are the company’s reported results, not independent validation.

There are other research approaches, but they are not directly comparable deployment claims. For example, ACL’s PostMark paper describes a post-generation method that inserts input-dependent words and reports paraphrase-robustness experiments. That work does not establish that PostMark is deployed at a scale comparable to Claude’s stated rollout. Separately, the 2024 Nature paper on SynthID-Text discusses how editing and paraphrasing can weaken generative watermarks and notes possible stealing, spoofing, and scrubbing attacks. The paper’s reported evaluation is context for the method family, not a head-to-head test of Anthropic against competitors.

What a detection result can—and cannot—show

Anthropic says the detector answers only: “What is the likelihood this was partly written by Claude?” A positive signal can support the conclusion that Claude was likely involved at some point. It does not prove Claude originated the ideas or the underlying text: Claude might have proofread, translated, summarized, or transformed material written elsewhere. Nor can the watermark identify who used Claude or reconstruct the text’s complete provenance.

A negative result is not proof that a text was written without AI. Detection can weaken or disappear when the text offers few meaningful word choices, when it is heavily changed, or when the model or platform does not support marking.

Cases where detection may be weak or absent

  • Short samples: there may be too little text for a statistical pattern to register reliably.
  • Exact or constrained wording: factual passages with one correct answer and code requiring exact tokens leave fewer low-stakes choices for the watermark to influence.
  • Editing and transformation: light grammar or punctuation changes may affect detection; heavy editing, paraphrasing, translation, mixing with other writing, or a complete rewrite can weaken or remove the mark.
  • Unsupported generation: text from models without marking support, or from unsupported platforms, may not carry a detectable mark.

These limitations mean the signal should not be treated as a standalone authorship test or proof in a high-stakes decision. Anthropic’s announcement also states that its method can establish only that Claude was likely involved with content at some point; it does not claim full provenance.

How to check whether text was written by Claude

Anthropic does not describe the detector as a public checker available to anyone. As of its current Help Center status, text detection is in private preview for eligible organizations. Listed groups include regulators, law enforcement, media, fact-checkers, researchers, educational organizations, civil-society groups, and certain enterprises with compliance obligations. Anthropic says it plans to expand access; that is not the same as general availability. Organizations seeking access should use the eligibility and access information on Anthropic’s support page.

Anthropic says detection is available to eligible organizations as required under EU law. In July 2026, the company also said it and other major AI providers signed the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, with around 190 total signatories. The signatory count is Anthropic’s stated figure; it does not measure watermark accuracy or establish that every signatory uses the same method. The European Commission’s Code of Practice page is linked from Anthropic’s announcement.

Text watermarks are not file credentials

Anthropic describes a separate mechanism for supported generated files: signed C2PA Content Credentials stored in file metadata. Those credentials concern files and their metadata; they are not the statistical text watermark and should not be used as interchangeable evidence. The company’s announcement and Help Center page distinguish the two.
