Claude Motion vs. Claude dashboards: What each tool is for (and what Anthropic actually offers)

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: “Claude Motion” is not a product name that Anthropic’s official material identifies. The documented usage-review feature is the Claude reflection dashboard, a beta view in Claude’s web and desktop Settings. A “Claude dashboard” can also mean an interactive app you create with Artifacts. Reflection helps you examine how you use Claude; an Artifact dashboard helps you run a project, campaign, or other workflow.

Those are different jobs, not competing versions of one tool. Use the reflection dashboard when the question is “How am I using Claude?” Use an Artifact when the question is “Can Claude help me build a dashboard for my own work?”

Is Claude Motion an official Anthropic tool?

Anthropic’s official announcement and help documentation identify a feature called reflection (or a reflection dashboard), not Claude Motion. The announcement published on July 9, 2026, describes a beta feature for reviewing Claude activity. It does not establish “Claude Motion” as a separate Anthropic product. See Anthropic’s announcement about reflecting on Claude use for the published feature name and description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Claude Motion” could be a typo, an informal label, or the name of an unrelated product. The available official information does not resolve which. It is therefore safer not to treat Motion and reflection as synonyms. If a screen, post, or app uses the Motion name, check its publisher and account domain before entering data or assuming that it is part of Claude.

For the comparison people usually intend, the useful question is: Do you want to review your Claude use, or build a dashboard with Claude?

What the Claude reflection dashboard is for

Reflection is a built-in, personal review of your Claude activity. Anthropic says it provides a breakdown of when you use Claude and what you spent that time working on. The announced summaries include key topics, usage patterns, and types of tasks, followed by prompts intended to help you consider whether your AI use matches your goals.

Where to find it

Anthropic’s announcement says, “Your reflection dashboard can be found in Settings on Claude for web or the desktop app.” Open Claude in a browser or the desktop application, open Settings, and look for the reflection feature. The announcement does not establish that every account, country, or plan has access, and it describes the feature as beta. If it is absent, that may reflect rollout or eligibility rather than a configuration mistake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What period it can review

The announced lookback choices are:

Lookback Best use What it represents
1 month A recent habit check Claude activity during the selected one-month period
3 months A short-term pattern Several weeks of topics and task types rather than a single unusual week
6 months A broader routine review Longer-term changes in how Claude fits into your work
12 months An annual perspective The widest announced review window

These are product settings, not research statistics or measures of productivity. A longer window can reveal recurring topics, while a shorter one is more useful after a change in role, project, or study schedule.

Reflection prompts and break controls

Anthropic says the feature may periodically raise questions about the role Claude plays in your life. One example is: “What’s one thing you want to keep doing yourself, even if Claude could do it faster?” The purpose is deliberate use, not a performance score.

The feature also lets you set quiet hours or a reminder to take a break after a chosen duration. Anthropic says reminders can be dismissed. Treat these controls as boundaries you choose, rather than evidence that Claude is monitoring activity outside the service.

The time-spent view is not confirmed as live

The July 2026 announcement said a view of time spent using Claude would be added “soon.” That wording described a planned addition at the time of publication. Do not assume the view is available in every account; check the current Settings interface before relying on it.

What a Claude dashboard made with Artifacts is for

An Artifact is an interactive app Claude creates through a conversation. Instead of reporting on your Claude history, it turns a problem you describe into a usable interface. Anthropic’s examples include a project dashboard with Gantt charts, progress bars, and milestone tracking, plus campaign dashboards with performance metrics and sales-pipeline visualizations.

That means “Claude dashboard” is a broad description, not one fixed Anthropic screen. The design, fields, calculations, and visualizations depend on the task and information you provide.

Typical Artifact dashboard inputs

  • The decision or workflow the dashboard should support.
  • The data or status information you want represented.
  • Measures such as milestones, progress, campaign performance, or pipeline stages.
  • How people should interact with the result, such as filtering, sorting, or updating status.
  • Any layout preference, including charts, tables, progress bars, or a timeline.

Be explicit about definitions. “Progress” could mean completed tasks, elapsed time, budget used, or a manually assigned percentage. Claude cannot infer which meaning your team uses reliably from the word alone.

What the Artifact produces

The result is an interactive app or visualization tailored to your request. A project view might place milestones on a Gantt chart and show completion bars. A campaign view might surface performance metrics and sales-pipeline stages. These are user-created tools for a chosen task, not automatically generated reports about Claude usage.

Access and sharing

Artifact access and sharing depend on the current Claude product surface and plan. Anthropic’s interface documentation lists Claude access through chat, mobile and desktop apps, Slack, and the Console/API; those interfaces do not mean that every Artifact behaves identically in each one. Confirm the sharing controls shown for your account before distributing an Artifact or its underlying data. See Anthropic’s Artifact help article for the documented creation concept and current interface guidance.

Reflection dashboard vs. Artifact dashboard

The distinction is easiest to see by comparing purpose, input, output, and access:

Question Claude reflection dashboard Dashboard created with an Artifact
Primary purpose Review how you use Claude and consider whether that use matches your goals Operate or understand another task, project, campaign, or business workflow
Main input Your Claude chat activity over a selected period The problem, definitions, and data you provide in the conversation
Output Topics, usage patterns, task types, and reflection prompts An interactive app or visualization such as a timeline, progress view, metric panel, or pipeline
Where it starts Settings in Claude for web or the desktop app An Artifact created from a Claude conversation
Lookback or scope Announced choices of 1, 3, 6, or 12 months Scope defined by the project or data you request; no universal dashboard period is stated
Status in the cited announcement Beta, announced July 9, 2026 Artifacts were announced as generally available on August 27, 2024; individual capabilities and sharing can change
Who controls the design Anthropic’s reflection interface You and Claude, within the Artifact’s available controls

Anthropic’s general Artifact announcement provides additional background on the interactive-app model: Artifacts are now generally available. It describes a way to turn a conversation into a working, shareable result rather than a static answer.

What each option cannot tell you

A reflection summary is not an audit of every digital activity. It describes the Claude activity included in the selected period; it does not establish how productive that work was or what happened in other applications. Likewise, an Artifact chart is only as reliable as the definitions and records supplied to it. A polished progress bar does not prove that a milestone is truly complete, and a pipeline total can be wrong if stages or source data are inconsistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither feature is described as a universal productivity score, business-value calculator, or independent time tracker. Use reflection to ask better questions about your habits, and use an Artifact to make an agreed workflow easier to inspect. Keep decisions, approvals, and the authoritative records in the process your team already trusts.

Concrete examples

Example: a student reviewing study habits

A student could use the one-month reflection view to see whether Claude conversations cluster around brainstorming, explanations, or editing. The result may prompt a choice about which parts of an assignment to continue doing independently. It would not show study time in a textbook or another app, and it would not grade the student’s learning.

Example: a project lead tracking delivery

The lead could ask Claude for an Artifact with milestone dates, owners, status definitions, a Gantt chart, and progress bars. Before sharing it, the team should agree on what “complete,” “blocked,” and each percentage mean. The Artifact can present the current list interactively, but someone still needs to update dates and resolve conflicting status reports.

Example: a campaign team reviewing a funnel

A campaign dashboard might display performance metrics and sales-pipeline stages. The prompt should identify the measures, reporting period, stage names, and desired filters. If the team changes a definition later, update the Artifact and document the change so older totals are not mistaken for current ones.

Common pitfalls and safer practices

  • Assuming the names are interchangeable. Verify whether a reference to Motion means the reflection feature or an unrelated service.
  • Reading beta availability as a guarantee. Reflection may not appear for every account, location, or plan; check the actual Settings screen.
  • Treating “soon” as a shipped feature. The announced time-spent view was future-tense in July 2026. Confirm it before promising that metric to others.
  • Leaving metrics undefined. State whether progress is calculated from completed tasks, elapsed time, budget, or a manually entered percentage.
  • Sharing more data than necessary. Review current Artifact sharing controls and remove information that viewers do not need.
  • Adding controls without a decision. Filters and sorting help only when they answer a real question; unnecessary controls can obscure a small dashboard.
  • Confusing presentation with a source of truth. Keep a reliable update process and reconcile conflicting records outside the visual layer.

Choose the right feature by starting with the job

Choose reflection when you want self-audit

  • You want to know which subjects or task types occupy your Claude conversations.
  • You are deciding whether Claude use supports your work, learning, or personal priorities.
  • You want a reminder or quiet period to make your use more intentional.
  • You need a review of Claude activity, not a project-management interface.

Choose an Artifact when you need an operational dashboard

  • You need milestones, progress bars, or a Gantt-style project view.
  • You want campaign metrics or a sales-pipeline visualization.
  • You have a defined dataset or status list and need an interactive way to inspect it.
  • You want to iterate on labels, calculations, layout, or filters through conversation.

Use both when the jobs are separate

There is no reason to force one feature to do the other’s work. Reflection can help you decide whether you are delegating too much or spending time on the right questions. An Artifact can then organize a project that Claude helped you plan. Keep the two purposes distinct: the reflection dashboard is about your relationship with Claude; the Artifact is about the workflow you choose to build.

How to review your Claude use with reflection

  1. Open the right interface. Sign in to Claude on the web or in the desktop app.
  2. Open Settings. Look for the reflection dashboard. If it is not present, check that you are using the current account interface; the beta announcement does not promise universal rollout.
  3. Select a lookback period. Compare 1, 3, 6, and 12 months when those choices are available. Use a shorter period for a recent change and a longer one for recurring patterns.
  4. Read the activity summary. Note the topics, usage patterns, and task types Claude presents. Treat them as a description of activity, not a judgment about quality or productivity.
  5. Answer the reflection prompts honestly. For example, identify work you want to keep doing yourself even when Claude could complete it faster.
  6. Set boundaries if useful. Configure quiet hours or a break reminder after a chosen duration, and dismiss reminders when they do not fit your situation.
  7. Verify optional views. If you see a time-spent panel, confirm that it is part of your current account rather than assuming the “soon” announcement means it is available everywhere.

How to build a useful Artifact dashboard

  1. State the decision first. Begin with what the dashboard must help someone decide, such as which milestones are late or which campaign stages need attention.
  2. Define every field. Specify what counts as complete, how dates are represented, which pipeline stages exist, and whether percentages are calculated or entered manually.
  3. Name the intended audience. A personal planning view may need different detail from a team status board or an executive summary.
  4. Request the first layout. Ask for the exact visual elements you need: a Gantt chart, progress bars, milestone list, metric cards, table, or pipeline view.
  5. Test the logic with examples. Provide a few representative records and check that dates, totals, statuses, and percentages behave as intended.
  6. Refine interaction. Ask for filters, sorting, grouping, or a detail view only when those controls support a real decision. Extra controls can make a small dashboard harder to read.
  7. Review privacy and sharing. Before sharing, inspect the current Artifact controls and remove information that viewers do not need. The available sharing behavior depends on the product surface and plan.
  8. Keep a source of truth. An Artifact can present the data you provide, but your team still needs a reliable process for updating that data and resolving conflicting statuses.

If the feature is missing

If reflection does not appear, first confirm that you are using Claude for web or the desktop app, since those are the locations named in Anthropic’s announcement. Then check the current account interface and product documentation. Do not infer that an absent menu means your account is broken: the announcement does not promise universal rollout, plan eligibility, or geographic availability. If someone points you to “Claude Motion,” ask for the exact publisher, URL, and menu path before signing in or uploading chat data.

For an Artifact, the starting point is a Claude conversation rather than the reflection menu. If creation or sharing options differ from an example you saw, verify the current product surface and plan. Anthropic lists chat, mobile and desktop apps, Slack, and the Console/API as access interfaces, but that list does not guarantee identical Artifact behavior in each interface.

Reflection is a beta feature in the cited announcement

The July 9, 2026 announcement calls reflection beta and identifies web and desktop Settings as its location. It does not establish plan eligibility, geographic availability, or completion of the rollout for every account. Use the wording “Anthropic says it is in Settings on web and desktop,” then verify what your own account shows.

“Claude Motion” remains unverified

Do not install an extension, share credentials, or upload conversation data merely because a third party uses the Motion label. The official sources cited here do not identify an Anthropic product by that name. If you need help with a specific screen called Motion, record its exact publisher, URL, and menu path and verify those details against Anthropic’s current documentation.

Neither dashboard is a universal productivity score

Reflection summarizes the activity Claude presents for the selected period; an Artifact visualizes the definitions and data supplied for a particular task. Neither description establishes that the feature measures the quality of your decisions, the business value of your work, or time spent in other applications. Avoid treating a chart or summary as more precise than its inputs.

Does reflection show how much time I spent in Claude?

The July 2026 announcement said a time-spent view would be added “soon.” Check your current account before assuming that panel is live.

Can Claude build a project or campaign dashboard?

Yes. Anthropic describes Artifacts as interactive apps created through conversations, including project dashboards with Gantt charts, progress bars, and milestones, and campaign dashboards with performance metrics and sales-pipeline visualizations.

Are reflection and Artifact dashboards available on every plan or device?

The cited materials do not establish universal plan, country, or device eligibility. Reflection is specifically located in web and desktop Settings; Artifact access and sharing depend on the current product surface and plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much do these dashboards cost?

The cited announcements and help pages do not state a separate price for the reflection dashboard or for an individual Artifact. Check the current Claude account and plan information rather than assuming a fee or free tier.

Can an Artifact dashboard replace a team’s source-of-truth system?

It can present the data and definitions you provide, but Anthropic’s description does not make it an authoritative record. Keep a reliable update process and reconcile conflicting statuses outside the visual layer.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: “Claude Motion” is not verified in Anthropic’s official material. The reflection dashboard is a beta, web-and-desktop Settings feature for reviewing Claude topics and usage patterns over 1, 3, 6, or 12 months. An Artifact dashboard is a custom interactive app for a project, campaign, or other workflow. Choose reflection for self-audit, Artifacts for operational visualization, and verify current access before relying on either.
