Claude Haiku 5.5 Resists Prompt Injection Better—But Isn’t Immune

Claude Haiku 5.5 is Anthropic’s most prompt-injection-resistant Haiku model so far, according to the company. Its results were broadly comparable to Anthropic’s larger models in adaptive coding and computer-use tests, but a separate benchmark still put Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 ahead. That is evidence of improved resistance—not proof that Haiku 5.5 can safely ignore every malicious instruction hidden in a webpage, email, or tool result.

What “ignoring hidden commands” means

A prompt injection is a malicious instruction concealed in material an AI agent processes—such as a webpage or email—that attempts to redirect the agent away from the user’s intent. The risk is more serious when an agent can both read sensitive information and take consequential actions. Anthropic describes the threat in its Transparency Hub.

Haiku 5.5’s reported improvement is about how often it resists these attacks under particular evaluations. It does not mean the model can identify and reject every malicious instruction in every agent setup.

How Haiku 5.5 compared on prompt-injection tests

Anthropic’s October 7, 2026 announcement calls Haiku 5.5 its most prompt-injection-resistant Haiku model yet. Help Net Security’s October 8 report says Haiku 5.5’s resistance largely matched Anthropic’s frontier models in adaptive coding and computer-use tests. On a separate Gray Swan benchmark, however, Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 remained more resistant; much of Haiku 5.5’s remaining vulnerability was in graphical computer use. These are benchmark-specific findings, not a universal ranking of safety.

The test setup matters. The report says most tests excluded additional production safeguards, and adaptive-attack results were reported both with and without prompt-injection probes. A model-only evaluation is not the same as the protection an application may deploy around it. The available reporting does not provide the full protocols, confidence intervals, or all per-condition attack figures, so the results cannot be independently reconstructed from those details.

What else changed—and what did not

Cybersecurity safeguards

Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 has more restrictive cybersecurity safeguards than Haiku 4.5, but somewhat less restrictive safeguards than its other recent models. It allows a wider range of defensive work than Sonnet 5.5 while still blocking penetration testing and techniques the company considers more likely to be used by attackers. These cybersecurity rules are distinct from prompt-injection resistance: neither should be treated as a guarantee that an agent will behave safely in every context.

Performance for a smaller model

Anthropic positions Haiku 5.5 for smaller, repeated, latency-sensitive work, including summaries, compactions, database queries, classification, live customer support, browser use, and coding subagent tasks. Its published results show gains over Haiku 4.5 on several task benchmarks, while Sonnet 5.5 scored higher in the cited comparisons:

Terminal-Bench 4.0 39.2% 0.0% 16.4% 70.6%

These are task-performance measurements reported by Anthropic, not prompt-injection scores. They help explain Haiku’s broader capabilities but do not establish how it will perform on every real-world task. Anthropic says larger Sonnet and Opus models remain better choices for complex agentic coding.

Customer-reported results

Some early customer evaluations also reported improvements, but they are customer-specific rather than independent benchmarks. Asana’s Aaron Vinh said its internal evaluation found over 30% lower task-completion latency and up to 2.5 times faster inference per agent turn. HubSpot’s Ze’ev Klapow reported 92.8% averaged over three runs on HubSpot’s simulated CRM-task suite. AlphaSense reported a score of 0.84 versus 0.76 across 400 queries for its “Ask in Document” evaluation; Box said early Box AI testing scored 11 points higher than Haiku 4.5 at about half the latency. These results describe the respective companies’ evaluations, not a single comparable test.

Why it is called a budget model

Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs about 75% less to run on average than Haiku 4.5. The reduction varies with prompt length: for prompts up to 100,000 tokens, input and output token prices are 90% lower; above 100,000 tokens, they are 50% lower. Anthropic says about 90% of Haiku 4.5 requests were at or below 100,000 tokens. Haiku 5.5 also uses an updated tokenizer that consumes slightly more tokens per task, so token-price reductions should not be mistaken for an identical reduction in every workload’s total bill.

Where to access Haiku 5.5

Anthropic lists the Claude Platform, AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure as access routes. The model ID is claude-haiku-5-5. Availability and implementation details may differ by platform.

What this means for people building AI agents

Haiku 5.5 is a meaningful improvement over earlier Haiku models in the reported prompt-injection evaluations, and its stronger task performance and lower stated costs make it relevant for repeated agent work. But choosing it should not replace safeguards around the agent: the evidence does not establish immunity, safety across every configuration, or that benchmark results will generalize to all live tasks. The right conclusion is narrower: Haiku 5.5 resisted the tested attacks better than Haiku 4.5, with results that varied by evaluation and remained weaker than larger models on at least one separate benchmark.
