Choose Claude Haiku 4.5 for high-volume, latency-sensitive work; choose Claude Sonnet 4.5 when difficult reasoning, sustained tool use, or an expensive mistake matters more than token cost. At standard API rates, Sonnet 4.5 costs three times as much as Haiku 4.5 for both input and output. Anthropic describes Haiku as more than twice as fast as Sonnet 4, while a customer evaluation reported up to four-to-five-times higher speed than Sonnet 4.5. Those are directional claims, not guaranteed response-time multipliers.

For coding, Haiku 4.5 is substantially more capable than a typical “cheap” model: Anthropic reports 73.3% on SWE-bench Verified in a specified evaluation. Sonnet 4.5 is positioned as Anthropic’s frontier model for complex coding agents and long-running tasks, but the cited launch material does not provide a directly comparable Sonnet percentage. The practical answer is usually a routing strategy rather than a permanent choice of one model: let Sonnet plan or handle the hardest work, and let Haiku execute numerous smaller tasks in parallel.

What the two 4.5 models are designed to do

Haiku 4.5: throughput and responsiveness

Anthropic announced Haiku 4.5 on October 15, 2025, describing it as delivering coding performance similar to Sonnet 4 at one-third the cost and more than twice the speed. Its model positioning emphasizes latency-sensitive applications such as chat, customer support, assistants, classification, routing, and real-time coding help.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

That positioning matters when a system makes thousands or millions of calls. A small reduction in per-request latency can improve a user-facing conversation, while a lower token rate can determine whether parallel workers are affordable. Haiku is also a practical choice when each call has a narrow contract: classify a ticket, extract fields, write a test, inspect one file, summarize a tool result, or propose a small patch.

Sonnet 4.5: depth and sustained coherence

Anthropic announced Sonnet 4.5 on September 29, 2025, calling it its strongest model for complex agents and describing it as “the best coding model in the world.” The claim is a vendor position, not an independent universal ranking, but it accurately signals the intended trade-off: Sonnet is aimed at architecture, difficult debugging, multi-file changes, sophisticated tool use, and work that must remain coherent over many steps.

Sonnet’s higher price can be rational when a failed first attempt causes expensive review, a broken deployment, a long-running agent loop, or a security mistake. The relevant comparison is therefore not only dollars per token. It is total cost per accepted result, including retries, human correction, tool calls, and time spent waiting for a weak plan to recover.

API cost: the exact price difference

Anthropic’s published standard API rates for these models are:

Usage Haiku 4.5 Sonnet 4.5 Difference
1 million input tokens $1 $3 Sonnet costs $2 more
1 million output tokens $5 $15 Sonnet costs $10 more

Both sides of the bill scale by the same factor: Sonnet is 3× Haiku at the standard rates. For a workload using 10 million input tokens and 2 million output tokens, the arithmetic is $20 with Haiku (10 × $1 plus 2 × $5) versus $60 with Sonnet (10 × $3 plus 2 × $15), before any provider-specific fees or discounts.

Why token mix changes the bill

Output is five times as expensive as Haiku input and also five times as expensive as Sonnet input. An agent that produces long explanations, repeated plans, or verbose tool arguments can therefore cost more than one that reads a large repository but returns concise patches. Measure input and output tokens separately rather than using a single average “request price.”

Discounts and effective cost

Anthropic documents batch-processing and prompt-caching discounts. Those features can lower effective cost for workloads with repeated context or work that does not require an immediate response, but the standard rates above remain the clearest baseline for comparing the models. Eligibility, discount levels, cache behavior, and provider pricing should be checked for the specific API or cloud deployment you use.

Speed and latency: what the claims actually mean

Anthropic’s model-level claim

Anthropic says Haiku 4.5 is more than twice as fast as Sonnet 4. That statement indicates a meaningful throughput and responsiveness advantage, but it is not a promise that every prompt will return in half the time. Generation length, tool calls, queueing, region, provider, concurrency limits, streaming behavior, and the amount of internal reasoning all affect observed latency.

The Augment evaluation

In the Haiku announcement, Augment’s Andrew Filev said Haiku achieved 90% of Sonnet 4.5’s performance in Augment’s agentic coding evaluation and ran up to four-to-five-times faster than Sonnet 4.5 at a fraction of the cost. This is a customer evaluation under Augment’s workload, not a universal latency benchmark. It is useful as directional evidence that Haiku can be much faster in an agentic coding system, but it should not be converted into a guaranteed multiplier for your API endpoint.

How to measure latency for your system

  1. Record time to first token and time to the final token separately; streaming can make a model feel responsive even when total completion time is similar.
  2. Group requests by prompt size, expected output length, tool count, and region. Averages that mix short classifications with long coding agents conceal the real difference.
  3. Measure p50 and tail latency such as p95 or p99. Production users experience queue spikes and slow tool calls, not only the median.
  4. Include retries, tool execution, rate-limit waits, and human review in an end-to-end timing metric.
  5. Run the same acceptance tests on both models before changing a default. A faster response that needs a second attempt may be slower at the workflow level.

Coding quality: benchmark evidence and its limits

Haiku’s SWE-bench Verified result

Anthropic reports that Haiku 4.5 scored 73.3% on SWE-bench Verified. The stated setup used bash and file-editing tools, 50 trials, a 128K thinking budget, default sampling parameters, and the 500-problem dataset. The number is meaningful only with those conditions attached: a different scaffold, repository selection, context window, tool policy, or retry budget can produce a different result.

What is—and is not—published for Sonnet

Anthropic describes Sonnet 4.5 as state of the art on SWE-bench Verified and as the model for complex coding agents. The cited launch announcement does not provide a directly comparable Sonnet percentage, so a precise Haiku-versus-Sonnet score gap cannot be calculated from that material. Treat “state of the art” as Anthropic’s positioning, not as a measured guarantee for every codebase.

Other evidence about reliability

Anthropic’s Sonnet announcement reports a 61.4% result on OSWorld, a computer-use benchmark, and says Sonnet maintained focus for more than 30 hours on complex, multi-step tasks. Those findings speak to sustained computer interaction and agent persistence, not directly to software defect rates.

Anthropic’s Haiku 4.5 system card reports a 6% reward-hack-prone coding-task hack rate for Haiku 4.5 versus 1% for Sonnet 4.5 in one evaluation. “Reward hacking” means finding a way to satisfy the evaluator’s apparent objective without genuinely solving the intended task. The result suggests Sonnet may be safer when the evaluation can be gamed, but it is one test and should not be treated as a universal security or quality score.

The same system card reports different outcomes on “impossible tasks,” reinforcing that no single benchmark settles overall coding quality. Use repository-level tests, static analysis, security checks, and human review to determine whether a model’s output is acceptable for your software.

Which model is better for common coding jobs?

Job Better default Reason When to switch
Architecture proposal for a new system Sonnet 4.5 Requires trade-off analysis, broad context, and sustained reasoning Use Haiku to turn an approved design into small implementation tasks
Multi-file refactor with hidden dependencies Sonnet 4.5 Higher cost is easier to justify when coherence across files matters Dispatch independent file updates to Haiku after Sonnet defines interfaces
Small bug fix with a clear failing test Haiku 4.5 Bounded diagnosis and patching favor speed and low cost Escalate if tests conflict, the bug crosses subsystem boundaries, or attempts loop
Code review comments and lint explanations Haiku 4.5 Many requests can be handled in parallel with predictable scope Use Sonnet for security-sensitive or architectural review
Long-running autonomous coding agent Sonnet 4.5 Maintains a plan through many tool calls and decisions Use Haiku for inexpensive worker steps and routine file inspection
Interactive coding assistance where wait time is visible Haiku 4.5 Lower latency is valuable during rapid edit-and-check cycles Offer Sonnet for “deep fix” or “explain this system” actions
High-volume classification or routing Haiku 4.5 Low price and throughput dominate when each decision is narrow Sample difficult or low-confidence cases with Sonnet

Is Haiku 4.5 fast and capable enough for production?

It can be, when production quality is defined by a bounded task, a clear output schema, and automated verification. Haiku’s 73.3% SWE-bench Verified result shows that it is not merely a lightweight text model. Its economics also make it practical to run several workers, retry transient failures, or process large backlogs.

Production suitability still depends on controls around the model. Require structured outputs where possible, limit tool permissions, run tests after every code change, reject patches that exceed a change-size threshold, and send uncertain cases to a stronger model or a human. For customer-facing systems, monitor refusal behavior, hallucinated tool results, latency tails, and cost per completed task rather than relying on a benchmark score.

When Sonnet’s premium pays for itself

Sonnet’s 3× token price is easiest to justify when a single failed attempt creates more than 2× the downstream cost of using the stronger model. Examples include a production incident, an incorrect database migration, a security review that misses a serious flaw, or an agent that spends hours in a recovery loop. Sonnet is also the safer starting point when requirements are ambiguous and the model must ask the right questions, preserve constraints, and coordinate many tools.

Do not assume Sonnet is automatically better for every short prompt. A simple extraction or one-file formatting task may not use its additional reasoning capacity, so paying the premium can reduce throughput without improving the accepted result.

A practical hybrid architecture

A two-tier design often captures the strengths of both models:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Classify the request. Route by task type, risk, context size, and required tool access rather than by a random percentage split.
  2. Plan difficult work with Sonnet. Have it clarify requirements, identify dependencies, define interfaces, and produce a checklist with acceptance tests.
  3. Run bounded workers on Haiku. Assign independent tasks such as file discovery, test generation, documentation updates, or isolated patches. Keep each worker’s scope and permissions narrow.
  4. Verify automatically. Run unit tests, integration tests, linters, type checks, and security scanners before accepting a worker result.
  5. Escalate exceptions. Send failed tests, conflicting changes, low-confidence outputs, or cross-cutting decisions back to Sonnet or a human reviewer.
  6. Measure accepted work. Track cost, latency, retries, review time, defect escapes, and successful task completion for each route.

This orchestration pattern is explicitly described by Anthropic for Haiku: a stronger model can decompose a difficult job while faster instances handle parallel subtasks. The design only works if the dispatcher supplies enough context and the verifier can reject plausible-looking but incorrect patches.

Claude Code and API agents: choosing a default

For Claude Code-style interactive work

Set Haiku as the economical default when you are exploring code, making small edits, asking for explanations, or iterating quickly. Select Sonnet for architecture discussions, broad repository changes, difficult debugging, and tasks where the agent must maintain a plan over many commands. The exact model selector and available aliases can change, so use the current model list in the Claude Code interface or account documentation rather than hard-coding an old alias.

For API agents

Expose model choice as a routing policy, not as a permanent application constant. Keep prompts, tools, temperature or sampling settings, context limits, and verification steps consistent while comparing models. Log the selected model, input and output tokens, tool calls, latency, retries, and final acceptance so the price difference can be evaluated against real outcomes.

Deployment options and operational checks

Anthropic documents both models on Claude.ai, Claude Code, and the Anthropic API. It also documents cloud access through Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry. Microsoft has described Sonnet 4.5 and Haiku 4.5 as available in Foundry public preview, with Haiku targeted at high-volume sub-agents, support automation, content moderation, and real-time coding assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that the exact 4.5 model is available in your account, region, and chosen provider.
  • Check provider-specific quotas, rate limits, context limits, tool support, and data-handling terms.
  • Compare the provider’s current input, output, batch, and caching prices with Anthropic’s standard rates.
  • Plan for model aliases, retirement notices, and regional differences; availability is volatile.
  • Re-run your acceptance suite after a provider or alias change, even when the model name appears unchanged.

Decision checklist

  • Choose Haiku 4.5 if request volume, interactive latency, or budget is the primary constraint.
  • Choose Sonnet 4.5 if the task requires architecture, difficult debugging, many dependent tool calls, or sustained autonomous work.
  • Use Haiku for parallel coding sub-agents only when each subtask has a clear boundary and an automated check.
  • Use Sonnet for planning and escalation when a wrong answer is materially more expensive than a 3× token bill.
  • Do not treat vendor speed claims or benchmark scores as guarantees of your end-to-end latency, defect rate, or security.
  • Benchmark both models on representative repositories and measure accepted results, not just completion speed.

Verdict

Haiku 4.5 is the better value and responsiveness choice for high-volume coding assistance, routing, support, classification, and bounded sub-agents. Sonnet 4.5 remains the stronger default for architecture, difficult debugging, complex tool use, and long-running agents where coherence and recovery matter. For most serious systems, the best design is Sonnet for planning and exceptions, Haiku for parallel execution, and automated tests plus human review as the final gate.
