Claude Code Security and CodeQL use fundamentally different analysis approaches. Anthropic describes Claude Code Security as a context-aware system that reasons across components and data flows, checks its own candidate findings in multiple stages, and proposes patches for human approval. GitHub CodeQL builds a database representation of a codebase and runs maintained or custom queries against it. Neither vendor’s documentation establishes a controlled head-to-head winner for accuracy, recall, or false-positive rate. In practice, the choice depends on your languages and frameworks, how much deterministic query customization you need, where scans must run, and how your team reviews and tracks findings.
Claude Code Security and CodeQL at a glance
These products are often discussed as if they were interchangeable scanners. They are not. CodeQL is a query-driven static-analysis engine with a documented language matrix and several GitHub or CI deployment modes. Claude Code Security is described by Anthropic as model-based reasoning over repository context, followed by adversarial verification and suggested remediation. Anthropic also documents a separate /security-review command and GitHub Action. Confirm which Claude feature you are evaluating before comparing plans, access, or workflow.

| Decision area | Claude Code Security and Claude Code security review | CodeQL |
|---|---|---|
| Core analysis | Anthropic describes reasoning across components, files, and data flows, with multi-stage checking of candidate findings. This is a vendor description, not an independent performance result. | Creates a database representation of source code and executes CodeQL queries against that database. |
| Language evidence | The cited Anthropic material does not provide one fixed supported-language matrix for every Claude security path. Verify the exact product and repository conditions. | GitHub publishes support for C/C++, C#, Go, Java/Kotlin, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Ruby, Rust, Swift, and GitHub Actions workflows. |
| Where it runs | The hosted product provides a dashboard and scheduled repository scans; a separate terminal command and GitHub Action are documented for Claude Code users. | GitHub default setup, a customizable advanced GitHub Actions workflow, or the standalone CLI in an external CI system with results uploaded to GitHub. |
| Results and fixes | Anthropic describes severity and confidence ratings, validated findings, and suggested patches that developers must review and approve. | Code-scanning alerts show source locations, severity, issue details, data-flow context where available, and remediation information. |
| Customization | The documented GitHub Action supports filtering and sensitivity settings; the product page describes directory scoping and scheduled scans. | Teams can use maintained query suites, query packs, custom queries, setup configuration, and models that extend data-flow analysis. |
| Comparative evidence | No controlled comparison against CodeQL is provided in the cited official sources. | No controlled comparison against Claude Code Security is provided in the cited official sources. |
The practical conclusion is complementary rather than winner-takes-all: CodeQL supplies repeatable, inspectable query analysis and GitHub-native alert tracking, while Claude’s documented value is broader contextual reasoning and a patch proposal that still requires a human decision.
What Claude Code Security is designed to do
Anthropic’s February 20, 2026 announcement presents Claude Code Security as a limited research preview for Enterprise and Team customers, with expedited access for open-source maintainers. Anthropic says the system examines how application components interact and traces data movement through an application instead of relying only on conventional rule matching. That description explains the intended approach; it does not prove that the system finds more vulnerabilities than a traditional analyzer.

According to Anthropic, a candidate finding passes through several verification stages in which Claude attempts to prove or disprove its own result. The service assigns severity and confidence, presents validated findings in a dashboard, and offers a suggested patch. Developers retain approval authority. Anthropic’s announcement states: “Nothing is applied without human approval: Claude Code Security identifies problems and suggests solutions, but developers always make the call.”
The current Claude Security product page describes parallel repository scanning, adversarial verification, recommended patches, recurring scheduled scans, and integrations through Slack, Jira, or webhooks. It also lists CSV and Markdown export. The page says hosted Enterprise scans use Claude Mythos 5.1 and warns that Claude can make mistakes. It identifies the Claude Security plugin for Claude Code as beta; that plugin uses models available through the user’s Claude Code account rather than necessarily the hosted service’s model. Access, model names, and beta status are volatile, so check the page again when you deploy.
What Anthropic’s reported vulnerability count does—and does not—show
Anthropic’s February announcement says its team used Claude Opus 4.6 to find over 500 vulnerabilities in production open-source codebases, with triage and responsible disclosure still ongoing at the time of publication. This is an Anthropic-reported discovery count. It is not a benchmark against CodeQL, an independently measured recall rate, or evidence that a particular repository will produce the same result.

Do not confuse the hosted product with /security-review
Anthropic’s Help Center separately documents “Automated Security Reviews in Claude Code,” dated March 16, 2026. It describes two routes: run /security-review from the project directory for an on-demand terminal review, or configure a GitHub Action that reviews pull requests and posts inline findings and recommended fixes.
The Help Center article lists SQL injection, cross-site scripting, authentication and authorization flaws, insecure data handling, and dependency vulnerabilities among the patterns the review can check. It also says the GitHub Action supports configurable filtering and sensitivity settings. The article describes availability for Claude Code users on Pro or Max individual paid plans and for individual or enterprise pay-as-you-go API Console accounts. Plans and labels can change, so treat that as the availability statement for the dated article rather than a permanent entitlement.
Anthropic explicitly positions automated reviews as a supplement to existing security practices and manual code review. The command can identify potential concerns, after which you can ask Claude to implement a fix. The Action can annotate pull requests, but an annotation is not proof that the issue is exploitable, and a generated change still needs normal testing and review.

A sensible command-line review sequence
- Open a clean checkout of the project and inspect the repository’s current branch and pending changes.
- Run
/security-reviewin the project directory using an account and plan that the dated Help Center article says are eligible. - Read each reported path, rationale, severity, and proposed change; confirm that the reported data flow exists in the current revision.
- Ask Claude to implement a fix only after deciding that the finding is valid and the remediation fits the application’s security model.
- Run the project’s tests, linters, dependency checks, and manual review before merging.
For pull-request coverage, configure the documented GitHub Action with the filtering and sensitivity choices appropriate to your repository, then require a human owner for every accepted or dismissed finding.

GitHub describes CodeQL as treating code like data. The engine first generates a database representation of the codebase. It then runs CodeQL queries against that database. When integrated with GitHub code scanning, query results become code-scanning alerts that can be reviewed, dismissed, fixed, or tracked over time.
This database-and-query sequence gives a security team a clear place to customize behavior. GitHub publishes query suites and query packs maintained by GitHub experts, security researchers, and community contributors. Teams can add custom queries for organization-specific rules, select different query suites, and create models that extend data-flow analysis for custom or niche frameworks.
CodeQL’s documented language coverage
GitHub lists the following supported languages and workflow types:
- C and C++
- C#
- Go
- Java and Kotlin
- JavaScript and TypeScript
- Python
- Ruby
- Rust
- Swift
- GitHub Actions workflows
GitHub warns that an unlisted language, including PHP or Scala, is unsupported and may produce no alerts or incomplete analysis. A repository that mixes supported and unsupported languages therefore needs an explicit coverage review; a successful workflow run does not mean every source file was analyzed.

Three CodeQL deployment routes
- Default setup: GitHub automatically chooses languages, a query suite, and triggering events. This is the quickest route when the repository fits GitHub’s standard assumptions.
- Advanced setup: Create a customizable workflow using the CodeQL Action. You control languages, query suites, build steps, schedules, and other workflow settings.
- Standalone CLI: Run CodeQL in an external CI system and upload the results to GitHub. This fits organizations that centralize builds outside GitHub while still wanting GitHub’s alert interface.
The appropriate route depends on where your builds already run and how much control your security team needs. Default setup reduces configuration work; advanced setup and the CLI expose more decisions for monorepos, unusual build systems, and organization-specific query policies.

What the findings look like
Claude findings and proposed patches
Anthropic says Claude Code Security findings include severity and confidence ratings and are shown after the service’s validation stages. The product is designed to present a recommended patch alongside the issue. The approval boundary matters: a suggestion is not an automatic code change, and Anthropic’s product page warns that Claude can make mistakes. Review the affected code, tests, authorization assumptions, and deployment impact before accepting any patch.
CodeQL alerts and data-flow context
GitHub’s code-scanning alert documentation says an alert can show the affected code line, severity, nature of the issue, and when it was introduced. Data-flow alerts can show how input moves through the program, and related vulnerable paths can be grouped into one alert. Alerts can appear on pull requests when the workflow is configured for that event.
CodeQL alerts can include information about how to fix the issue. GitHub also documents Copilot Autofix as a separate capability; do not treat that feature as part of CodeQL’s database-and-query engine itself.
Where the analytical approaches differ
Context and reasoning versus explicit queries
Claude’s differentiator, in Anthropic’s account, is reasoning about interactions among components and tracing data across an application before attempting to validate a candidate result. This can be useful when a vulnerability depends on business logic spread across files or on an unusual combination of components. The evidence available here is a vendor description, not a controlled measurement of precision or recall.
CodeQL makes its analytical mechanism explicit: represent the code in a database, then execute queries. That model is valuable when you need reproducible rules, reviewable query changes, and a way to encode an organization’s own sources, sinks, sanitizers, and framework behavior. It should not be reduced to shallow pattern matching; GitHub documents data-flow alerts and model extensions for custom frameworks.
Determinism and customization
A maintained CodeQL query can be versioned, code-reviewed, tested against fixtures, and run consistently in CI. Custom queries and models let a security engineering team express policies that are specific to its frameworks. Claude’s documented controls are different: the GitHub Action offers filtering and sensitivity settings, while the hosted product describes directory scoping and recurring scans. If your primary requirement is to change the detection logic itself, CodeQL exposes the more explicit query and model surface.

Remediation style
Claude is documented as proposing a patch after validating a finding, with a person approving the change. CodeQL primarily produces an alert with source and data-flow context; remediation can be manual, handled through normal pull-request work, or assisted by separate GitHub capabilities. Choose based on whether you want the scanner to present a candidate implementation or mainly to provide a stable, inspectable finding record.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choosing between them for a real codebase
Start with language and framework coverage
Inventory every language that matters to the attack surface, not only the language used by the main service. For CodeQL, compare that inventory with GitHub’s supported list and identify PHP, Scala, or other unlisted components that may be left incomplete. For Claude, verify the exact product path, repository conditions, and current access terms because the cited Anthropic sources do not publish one universal matrix.
Match the workflow to your release process
- Choose CodeQL default setup when a GitHub-centered repository needs a fast standard configuration.
- Choose advanced CodeQL setup when builds, schedules, query suites, or language selection need explicit control.
- Choose the CodeQL CLI when CI runs outside GitHub but findings should still be uploaded to GitHub.
- Choose hosted Claude Security when a dashboard, parallel scans, scheduled scans, exports, or Slack, Jira, and webhook integrations fit the organization.
- Choose the Claude Code command or GitHub Action when developers need an on-demand terminal review or pull-request comments.
Decide how much human approval is required
Both workflows need human judgment, but at different points. Claude’s documented process places approval directly before a suggested patch is applied. CodeQL’s alert workflow requires a reviewer to validate the alert and decide how to remediate, dismiss, or track it. Establish ownership, review deadlines, and an exception process before enabling either tool so findings do not accumulate without decisions.
Check data-handling and organizational requirements
Before sending a repository to a hosted service or enabling a CI integration, confirm your organization’s rules for source-code handling, secrets, retention, network access, and audit records. Also verify the current Enterprise, Team, individual, or API account requirements for the Claude feature you intend to use. The cited product pages do not establish one universal policy for every organization.
Using both tools without duplicating effort
A layered workflow can assign each tool a clear role instead of treating one as a replacement for the other. Use CodeQL for repeatable baseline queries, language-specific coverage, custom framework models, and GitHub alert lifecycle management. Use Claude’s contextual review for a second analytical perspective on high-risk services, complex authorization paths, cross-component data flows, or pull requests where a proposed remediation would help a developer investigate.
- Run CodeQL on supported languages in CI and require review of new or changed alerts.
- Use custom CodeQL queries or models for organization-specific sources, sinks, and framework behavior.
- Schedule Claude scans or invoke the documented review workflow on repositories and pull requests where contextual analysis is valuable.
- Compare findings by vulnerability identity and code path, not by raw alert count; one tool may group paths differently from the other.
- Have a security owner adjudicate disagreements, confirm exploitability, and approve or reject patches.
- Record accepted risks, false positives, and fixes in the team’s existing tracking system.
This arrangement preserves deterministic checks while adding another way to investigate issues. It does not establish that the combined workflow has a particular detection rate; measure it internally with your own fixtures, historical incidents, and review outcomes.
Best Value
Limits of the available comparison
The official sources reviewed provide product descriptions and workflow documentation, not a controlled experiment using the same repositories, language versions, vulnerability set, scan configuration, or reviewer process. There is no supported basis here for claiming that Claude Code Security has higher recall, that CodeQL has fewer false positives, or that either tool is faster in a like-for-like test.
Anthropic’s reported discovery of more than 500 vulnerabilities is not a CodeQL comparison. Likewise, CodeQL’s published language support does not imply that every supported repository receives complete or perfect analysis. Treat accuracy, coverage, cost, and scan duration as deployment questions to validate in your own environment.
Source and availability checks
For Claude’s hosted product, review the current Claude Security product page for access, model, integration, and beta details. For the separate command and Action, consult Anthropic’s dated Automated Security Reviews in Claude Code article and verify that its plan language still matches your account.

Bottom line
Pick CodeQL when you need a documented language matrix, database-backed analysis, versioned queries, custom models, and GitHub or external-CI alert workflows. Pick Claude Code Security when its current access terms fit and you value contextual reasoning, multi-stage self-checking, scheduled or parallel scans, and proposed patches that a developer must approve. For many teams, the strongest design is to run both with distinct responsibilities. No cited source supports declaring either product the universal accuracy winner.
