Choose by the kind of game you want, not by release order. Start with Warcraft for fantasy real-time strategy, StarCraft for science-fiction strategy, or Diablo for direct, hero-focused action RPG combat. For a chronological Warcraft start, use Warcraft I: Remastered; for a broader later campaign, use Warcraft III: Reforged. StarCraft: Remastered is the most straightforward strategy package because it includes the original game and Brood War.
The fastest way to choose
Blizzard’s catalog puts Warcraft and StarCraft in the real-time-strategy (RTS) category and Diablo in action RPG. That distinction determines almost everything you will do minute to minute.

| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fantasy armies, base building and a long-running human-versus-orc setting | Warcraft I: Remastered | It covers the first human-orc war and is the chronological beginning. |
| A later Warcraft campaign with more factions and a wider strategic toolkit | Warcraft III: Reforged | It offers campaign armies, several factions and multiplayer matchmaking. |
| Science-fiction strategy with three radically different races | StarCraft: Remastered | It combines the original campaign with Brood War, updated presentation and online play. |
| A controllable hero, loot, dungeons and constant combat rather than a base | Diablo | It is the action-RPG match, built around exploring and fighting with a hero. |
There is no official Blizzard ranking that makes one of these the universally correct first game. The right entry point depends on genre, setting, tolerance for older interfaces, and whether you prefer a solo campaign or competitive play.
Start with Warcraft if you want fantasy real-time strategy
Warcraft is the choice for commanding units, gathering resources, constructing a base and fighting across a fantasy setting. Its central conflict begins with humans and orcs, then expands through later entries into a larger world and more varied factions.

Warcraft I: Remastered for the beginning of the story
Warcraft: Orcs and Humans was released in 1994 and is identified by Blizzard as the first Warcraft game. Its two campaigns follow the human and orc sides of the initial war. Blizzard’s description also lists 21 bonus maps for custom games and two-player versus play.
Warcraft I: Remastered preserves that foundational structure while adding updated hand-painted art, widescreen battles, a revised interface, rebalanced music and modern control options. The remaster lets you switch between original and remastered graphics, so you can compare the presentation without changing the underlying game. This is the best choice if “first” means the earliest story entry or if you want to see where the series’ faction design began.
Warcraft II for the middle chapter and naval warfare
Warcraft II continues the human-orc conflict and takes it to the sea. Its defining addition is naval warfare alongside the land-based economy and army management. Warcraft II: Remastered likewise allows switching between classic and updated visuals.

Choose it before Warcraft III when you want the historical progression and a game that sits between the original’s compact design and Warcraft III’s broader campaign structure. Blizzard has also described enhanced classic Warcraft releases with resolution and compatibility improvements and LAN or peer-to-peer multiplayer. Details such as language support and storefront features can vary by edition and region, so check the current listing before buying.
Warcraft III: Reforged for a later, broader campaign
Warcraft III: Reforged is not the chronological first game, but it is the most natural starting point for readers who want a more developed campaign and more faction variety immediately. Blizzard describes campaigns, armies, several factions and multiplayer matchmaking. Its Patch 2.0 included environment and lighting work, interface updates, high-definition asset improvements and quality-of-life changes.
Because it begins later in the setting, you will encounter references and world-building that originated in earlier games. You can still follow its campaigns without playing Warcraft I and II, but the experience is different: you are entering an established universe rather than watching its first conflict form.

Which Warcraft release fits your priorities?
- Chronology: Warcraft I: Remastered, then Warcraft II: Remastered, then Warcraft III: Reforged.
- More developed campaign and factions: Warcraft III: Reforged.
- Classic feel with a visual comparison option: either Warcraft I: Remastered or Warcraft II: Remastered.
- Naval battles: Warcraft II.
- Competitive or network play: verify the specific edition’s current multiplayer support and account requirements before purchase.
Start with StarCraft if you want science-fiction strategy
StarCraft uses the same broad RTS framework—economy, bases, technology and armies—but its setting and faction design are science fiction. You command Terran humans, Protoss or Zerg, and each race approaches production, combat and expansion differently.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why StarCraft: Remastered is the simplest entry
StarCraft: Remastered includes the original game and the Brood War expansion. It retains the classic campaign structure, upgrades graphics and audio, and supports online multiplayer after or alongside campaign play. That makes it a self-contained route through the original StarCraft story rather than a choice between separate base games and expansions.
The remaster changes presentation, not the fundamental genre: you still manage workers and resources, build production, research upgrades and control groups of units in real time. If you want a modern-looking interface but classic rules and missions, this is the appropriate version.
Choosing among Terran, Protoss and Zerg
Do not try to identify a single “beginner” race before playing. Blizzard’s own race guide recommends trying all three to discover which suits you. That advice matters because the races are intentionally distinct rather than cosmetic variations.
- Terran: the human faction and a useful starting perspective for the story; their conventional military presentation can feel familiar to RTS newcomers.
- Protoss: an advanced alien civilization with a different technological and strategic identity.
- Zerg: an alien swarm whose units and expansion approach feel unlike a conventional army.
Play a few campaign missions or practice games with each race before committing to online matches. The goal is to learn which production rhythm and battlefield tools you enjoy, not to find a universally strongest option.

When StarCraft is a better first game than Warcraft
Pick StarCraft when the setting is the deciding factor, when you want a three-way conflict instead of a two-faction origin story, or when you want the original game and its major expansion in one remastered package. Pick Warcraft instead if fantasy lore, humans and orcs, or the Warcraft timeline matters more than asymmetrical science-fiction armies.

Start with Diablo if you want a hero and immediate action
Diablo is not an RTS. You control one hero directly, explore dangerous areas, fight monsters, collect equipment and advance through an action-RPG loop. There is no base to construct and no army of units to manage. Your attention stays on movement, attacks, abilities, survival and the next piece of loot.
The original Diablo for the historical starting point
Blizzard dates the original Diablo to December 31, 1996 and describes it as the game that introduced Sanctuary. The original was rereleased through GOG in preserved form with compatibility fixes. That edition is the relevant choice if you want to experience the series’ first version rather than a later modernization.
Because that release is an older PC game, check the current storefront page for supported operating systems, language options and any regional availability before purchase. The historical price mentioned in Blizzard’s announcement is not a current price and should not be used as a buying guide.
What Diablo feels like compared with the strategy games
| Activity | Diablo | Warcraft or StarCraft |
|---|---|---|
| Primary control | One hero | Workers, buildings and multiple units |
| Core progression | Equipment, abilities and character growth | Economy, technology, production and army composition |
| Typical pace | Continuous combat and exploration | Planning mixed with real-time attacks and defense |
| World focus | Sanctuary, dungeons and monsters | Faction campaigns and battlefield objectives |
If you are looking for a game where you can start fighting almost immediately and improve a single character, Diablo is the clear first choice. If you want to think about build orders, territory and several units at once, choose an RTS instead.
Original release or remaster?
The classic releases do not all modernize in the same way. Use this distinction when deciding which version to install.
| Game | What the current classic release provides | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Warcraft I: Remastered | Updated art, widescreen battles, interface and control changes; switchable original/remastered graphics | Chronological start with easier modern presentation |
| Warcraft II: Remastered | Remastered presentation with a switch between updated and original graphics | The middle Warcraft chapter and naval warfare |
| Warcraft III: Reforged | Campaigns, armies, several factions, matchmaking and Patch 2.0 visual, interface and quality-of-life work | A later, broader Warcraft entry |
| StarCraft: Remastered | Original game plus Brood War, upgraded graphics and audio, online play | Complete classic StarCraft campaign package |
| Diablo (original) | Original Sanctuary experience rereleased with compatibility fixes | Historical first entry and original atmosphere |
Warcraft I and II’s visual toggle is especially useful if you are uncertain about remasters: you can use the updated display for readability and switch back when you want the original look. StarCraft: Remastered similarly keeps classic gameplay while improving audiovisual presentation, but it does not turn the game into a modern RTS with new systems.

Solo campaign, multiplayer or both?
Choose a campaign-first route
For a story-led introduction, play Warcraft I: Remastered for the human and orc campaigns, StarCraft: Remastered for its original campaign and Brood War, or the original Diablo for a single-hero descent into Sanctuary. Warcraft III: Reforged is the campaign-first alternative if you prefer a later setting with more factions and larger narrative scope.

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans includes two-player versus play, while StarCraft: Remastered supports online play. Warcraft III: Reforged includes multiplayer matchmaking according to Blizzard’s description. Older Warcraft editions may expose different LAN, peer-to-peer or Battle.net behavior, so confirm the exact release and current service requirements rather than assuming every classic version has identical online access.
Diablo’s original release should be approached primarily as a historical action-RPG experience. The available evidence for this choice establishes the rerelease and compatibility fixes, not a current multiplayer feature set; check the current product page if online play is essential.
A practical decision process
- Pick your control fantasy. If you want one hero, choose Diablo. If you want to command an economy and army, continue with an RTS choice.
- Pick your setting. Fantasy points to Warcraft; science fiction points to StarCraft.
- Decide how much history you want. Select Warcraft I: Remastered or original Diablo for the earliest entry. Select Warcraft III: Reforged for a later Warcraft campaign, or StarCraft: Remastered for a package containing the original game and Brood War.
- Decide whether presentation matters. The Warcraft remasters provide a visual switch; StarCraft: Remastered upgrades graphics and audio while retaining classic play; the original Diablo remains a preserved older release with compatibility fixes.
- Check availability before paying. Regional storefronts, languages, operating-system support and multiplayer services can change. Verify the current listing for your country and platform.
Common first-choice mistakes
Choosing by chronology when you really want modern convenience
The oldest game is not automatically the best introduction. Warcraft I is the chronological start, but Warcraft III: Reforged may fit better if you want a later campaign and broader faction selection. Likewise, the original Diablo is historically important, but its preserved presentation is intentionally old.
Assuming all RTS factions play alike
Warcraft’s factions and StarCraft’s races are not interchangeable skins. StarCraft in particular is built around distinct Terran, Protoss and Zerg play styles. Sample all three before deciding which one to learn deeply.
Expecting an action RPG to teach RTS skills
Diablo can be an excellent first Blizzard game, but it will not prepare you for worker production, build orders or army control. Choose it because you want action-RPG play, not as a shortcut into strategy.
Best Value
Using an old price or feature description as a current promise
Historical announcements may quote prices or describe services that no longer apply. Treat the original Diablo price mentioned in 2019-era material as historical only, and verify current edition, language, operating-system and multiplayer details at the time you buy.
Final recommendation by player type
- Fantasy strategist: Warcraft I: Remastered, unless you specifically want the broader later campaign of Warcraft III: Reforged.
- Science-fiction strategist: StarCraft: Remastered, then try Terran, Protoss and Zerg before settling on a race.
- Action-RPG newcomer: Diablo, with the original release as the historical entry point.
- Player who wants the most convenient classic package: StarCraft: Remastered for its original game plus Brood War, or a Warcraft remaster if switchable visuals and modern controls matter more.
- Player interested in release history: Warcraft I: Remastered, Warcraft II: Remastered, Warcraft III: Reforged; then compare StarCraft: Remastered and the original Diablo as separate genre branches.
