Yes, unmanned systems have fought unmanned systems in Ukraine—but the reported encounters do not show fully independent AI robots conducting a battlefield duel. They show a more complicated reality: remotely operated FPV drones attacking ground robots, an aerial drone striking an unmanned boat, and human teams providing the reconnaissance, targeting, piloting, communications and command decisions behind the machines.
The distinction matters. A drone that collides with another vehicle is not necessarily autonomous, and a ground robot that can recognize objects is not necessarily authorized to choose and attack targets. The incidents described below demonstrate machine-on-machine combat, but they do not by themselves prove that humans have been removed from the engagement.

Two reported machine-on-machine engagements
The phrase “robot-versus-robot” became associated with a June 27, 2024 article by Indian Defence Review, written by Anil Warner. That article described two reported episodes on the Ukrainian front.

Russian ground robots attacked near Avdiivka
According to the report, three Russian unmanned ground vehicles approached Ukrainian positions in the Avdiivka sector near Donetsk. A Ukrainian reconnaissance drone, associated in the account with the 47th Mechanized Brigade, detected them. Ukrainian FPV attack drones then destroyed the vehicles before they reached the trenches.

Several important details remain uncertain. The exact Russian vehicle model is not established by the available source, and accounts differed on whether the vehicles carried machine guns or automatic grenade launchers. The incident is therefore best described as a reported attack on Russian UGVs by Ukrainian remotely piloted drones—not as a conclusively documented autonomous ground-robot assault.
A Russian FPV drone strikes a Ukrainian surface vessel
The same article described video that reportedly emerged on May 30, 2024. In it, a Russian FPV drone flies low over water and collides with a Ukrainian unmanned surface vessel. The vessel was identified in the article as a Magura-type USV, although that identification should not be treated as independently confirmed from the available source.
This was an unmanned system intercepting or destroying another unmanned system. The footage, as described, can demonstrate an approach and impact. It cannot by itself establish the drone’s software, the operator’s location, the chain of command, or whether any part of the attack was autonomous.
What counts as a “robot” here?
“Robot” is a useful headline term, but it covers systems with very different levels of human involvement:
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| UGV | Unmanned ground vehicle, such as a tracked or wheeled robotic vehicle. |
| UAV | Unmanned aerial vehicle, including reconnaissance drones and FPV attack drones. |
| USV | Unmanned surface vessel operating on water. |
| Remote-controlled | A human directly pilots or commands the vehicle through a communications link. |
| Semi-autonomous | The system assists with navigation, stabilization, route-following, tracking or recognition while a human retains meaningful control. |
| Autonomous | The system independently performs a defined task or makes a decision within programmed parameters. |
| Human-in-the-loop | A human authorizes the use of force. |
| Human-on-the-loop | The system may act automatically while a human supervises and can intervene. |
| Human-out-of-the-loop | No human is required to authorize or supervise the immediate action. |
The reported incidents most clearly fit the first two categories of combat activity: human-directed reconnaissance and remotely piloted attacks. Automated stabilization, object recognition or navigation assistance would not, on their own, make a platform an independent lethal decision-maker.
The Marker question: recognition is not authorization
The Russian Marker is described in the source article as an unmanned ground-vehicle program available in wheeled and tracked forms. The article puts its weight at approximately three tonnes and describes possible payloads including weapons and potentially anti-tank guided missiles. It also attributes claims of AI-enabled recognition and the ability to identify personnel or vehicles.

Those claims require careful interpretation. There is a major difference between:

- classifying it as a vehicle or person;
- tracking it while it moves;
- determining whether it is hostile;
- selecting it as a target; and
- authorizing and executing lethal force.
A system can perform the first three tasks while a human performs the last three. Even a platform that can operate without a nearby operator may still depend on a remote commander for mission selection, weapons release or rules-of-engagement decisions.
The available reporting does not establish that a Marker independently selected and attacked a target in combat. It is more accurate to say that the platform has been described as possessing computer-assisted recognition or autonomy-related capabilities, while the extent of any autonomous weapons employment remains unclear.
Why smaller ground robots may make more sense
The Marker was discussed alongside other Russian unmanned ground systems, including Nerekhta, Platforma-M, Soratnik, Kungas, Skarabey, Sfera, Uran-6, Uran-14, Prokhod-1 and Shturm. Their roles and development status have not all been established by the available source; a list of programs should not be mistaken for a list of combat-proven systems.
The source article contrasts relatively small systems with the heavier Uran-9 and argues for simpler platforms. That is an interpretation, not a universal rule, but it reflects a genuine battlefield trade-off.

Advantages of a smaller UGV
- Lower cost: Losing one is less damaging if it can be replaced quickly.
- Smaller signature: A compact vehicle may be harder to see or detect thermally.
- Lower logistics burden: It requires less transport, fuel or power infrastructure.
- Mission flexibility: It can carry sensors, ammunition or a specialized payload without trying to perform every combat role.
- Reduced human exposure: It may scout, resupply or clear a route where sending a crewed vehicle would be dangerous.
Limitations
- Small vehicles have limited power, payload and endurance.
- They remain vulnerable to FPV drones, artillery, mines, electronic warfare and rough terrain.
- Trenches, rubble, vegetation, smoke and damaged infrastructure are difficult environments for autonomous navigation.
- Recognition systems can struggle with camouflage, decoys, civilians, damaged equipment and changing weather.
- Recovery and repair may expose additional personnel under fire.
- A radio link can be jammed, intercepted or lost.
A cheaper robot is not automatically better. Its value depends on whether it can complete a useful mission before its communications, sensors, mobility or payload are defeated.

What the Uran-9 experience illustrates
The source article describes the heavier Uran-9 as carrying a 30 mm cannon, a machine gun, anti-tank guided missiles and thermobaric rockets, alongside infrared imaging and a laser rangefinder. It also reports criticism of the vehicle’s performance during testing in Syria, including difficulty completing assigned tasks.
Those reported problems are important because they illustrate the difference between a specification sheet and a battlefield system. A robotic combat vehicle must integrate:
- reliable communications;
- operator controls and situational awareness;
- sensors that work through dust, smoke and darkness;
- mobility across broken ground;
- power and cooling;
- maintenance and recovery procedures;
- doctrine and training; and
- command authority.
Failure in any one of these areas can make an armed vehicle ineffective even when its weapons and armor appear impressive. It is also why the reported performance criticism should not be reduced to a simple claim that the vehicle’s hardware was bad.
The available source does not independently establish how many Uran-9 vehicles were produced. Claims of large production totals should therefore not be repeated as settled fact.
The hidden battle is electronic
Unmanned warfare is often presented as a contest between vehicles, but the decisive contest may be between networks. A platform’s practical combat value depends on whether it can see, communicate and navigate while the opposing force attempts to disrupt all three.
Relevant vulnerabilities include:
- Jamming: disrupting the control or video link;
- Navigation denial: interfering with satellite-navigation signals;
- Link interception: locating the operator or relay;
- Relay dependence: requiring aircraft, repeaters or other nodes to maintain range;
- Software adaptation: changing systems quickly as countermeasures evolve; and
- Signal loss: deciding whether the vehicle stops, returns, follows a route or continues a mission.
A platform that is heavily armed but easy to jam may be less useful than a simpler system with a resilient communications architecture. Conversely, a vehicle that can continue navigating after losing its link may still need human authorization before using lethal force.

The economics of robot-on-robot attrition
The reported encounters also expose an asymmetry. A sophisticated UGV may be attacked by a comparatively small FPV drone. That does not automatically make the UGV a failure: it may have forced the enemy to spend a drone, revealed firing positions, delivered supplies or cleared a route before being destroyed.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBut the exchange raises practical questions:
- How much does the platform cost to build and replace?
- How quickly can it be delivered to the front?
- How many operators and technicians does each vehicle require?
- What are the costs of its payload, batteries, communications equipment and recovery?
- Can it perform a mission that a cheaper drone cannot?
- Does its loss create a larger operational problem than the loss of the attacking system?
Reliable prices for the particular systems described are not established by the available source, so a precise cost-exchange ratio would be misleading. The general lesson is clearer: survivability is an economic property as well as a technical one. A system that is difficult to replace may be unsuitable for missions in which cheap drones are abundant.
Humans remain inside the system
“Unmanned” does not mean “unhuman.” The reported attacks still required people to conduct reconnaissance, interpret information, select missions, operate drones, maintain equipment, manage communications and make command decisions.
Even an autonomous function depends on human choices about:
- where to send the vehicle;
- what objects it is permitted to classify as threats;
- when it may use force;
- what happens if its link is lost;
- how it handles uncertainty; and
- how commanders assess the consequences of an attack.
The operator may be far from the vehicle—inside a shelter, a vehicle or a remote control station—but distance does not equal absence. “No humans were visibly nearby” is not evidence that no humans were involved.
What these incidents prove—and what they do not

- Unmanned systems can directly attack other unmanned systems.
- FPV drones can threaten ground robots and surface vessels, not just people or conventional vehicles.
- The battlefield is increasingly a contest involving sensors, software, communications links and expendable platforms.
- A platform’s advertised AI capability is less important than its ability to function under jamming, concealment, terrain and time pressure.
- Small, adaptable systems may be more practical for some missions than complex “robot tank” designs.
They do not establish that the Avdiivka incident was definitively the first robot-versus-robot engagement. They do not prove that Marker independently identified and attacked targets. They do not establish that humans were absent from either operation, and they do not show that robotic vehicles have replaced soldiers or conventional forces.
Most importantly, the footage and reporting do not provide enough evidence to determine the exact vehicle identities, weapons, operators, software or authorization chain involved. Those limits are part of the story, not a reason to turn uncertain claims into certainty.
The larger significance
Ukraine’s battlefield is showing a form of machine-on-machine warfare that is less cinematic than the phrase suggests. It is not necessarily a clash between independent artificial intelligences. It is a networked fight in which human teams use relatively inexpensive machines to find, disrupt and destroy other machines.

The likely advantage will not automatically go to the platform with the biggest gun or the most ambitious AI label. It may go to the system that can be produced at scale, resist jamming, operate with manageable training demands, survive long enough to complete its mission and be replaced quickly when it does not.
That is the real lesson behind the reported robot encounters: the future of unmanned warfare will be decided by the entire human-machine system, not by the robot alone.
