Citizen Science Groups Grapple With the Rise of A.I. Slop

Artificial intelligence is already woven into citizen-science projects, from collecting observations to classifying images and validating records. It can let small teams handle volumes that volunteers alone cannot, but it also creates a trust problem: synthetic, opaque or weakly checked material can enter the same datasets as genuine observations.

“A.I. slop” is used here as an editorial shorthand for that low-quality or poorly documented material, not as a measured category. No available study establishes how many citizen-science submissions are AI-generated, and no published incident demonstrates a sector-wide rate. The evidence instead points to a governance test: projects must make provenance, AI use and human checking visible.

AI is already part of the citizen-science workflow

A 2025 systematic scoping review by Germain Abdul-Rahman, Andrej Zwitter and Noman Haleem searched Scopus, the ACM Digital Library and Web of Science for English-language work published from January 2013 through December 2024. It screened 2,470 records and retained 90 studies. The authors describe AI functions that assist or replace human work, increase engagement, identify patterns and support decisions. They conclude that variable data quality, algorithmic opacity and limits on scaling remain persistent challenges.

The distribution of those studies shows where the pressure is concentrated:

Citizen-science activity Studies in the 2025 review Share of 90 retained studies
Classification or annotation by citizens 40 43%
Data collection 37 40%
Validation 7 7%
Decision-making 3 3.2%
AI classification or detection (overlapping study category) 60 64.5%
Data-quality issues (overlapping study category) 20 21.5%

The categories overlap, so they are not a tally of separate projects. They do show that AI-assisted classification and detection are much more commonly documented than AI-focused validation or decision-making.

Why “slop” threatens more than a single record

A fabricated image or automatically generated sighting matters because citizen-science databases are often reused. A questionable entry can distort a species map, train a detection model, trigger a conservation response or undermine public confidence in volunteers. The same problem applies to authentic observations whose source, processing history or review status is hidden.

The Association for Advancing Participatory Sciences describes citizen science and artificial intelligence as “two powerful tools for tackling complex scientific challenges.” Its 2024 special-collection announcement also identifies the unresolved trade-offs: AI may complement or augment volunteers, but projects must address possible volunteer replacement, task design, data reliability, skills, access to resources, inclusion, transparency and environmental cost.

Human participation is therefore not merely a source of free labor. Volunteers provide contextual knowledge, learn scientific practices and create legitimacy around the resulting evidence. Removing their opportunities to inspect, question and understand records can weaken both quality control and the educational purpose of citizen science.

What a trustworthy project should disclose

Projects do not need to reject every machine-learning tool. They do need a traceable chain from observation to published result. A practical disclosure should answer these questions for each dataset or workflow:

  • Origin: Who submitted the observation, when, where and with what device or sensor?
  • AI involvement: Did a model generate, enhance, classify, rank, translate or otherwise alter the material?
  • Process: Which model, version or decision rule was used, and what task was it allowed to perform?
  • Human review: Who checked the output, what evidence did they use and what happens when reviewers disagree?
  • Data standards: Which fields, formats, identifiers and uncertainty measures are required, and can the record interoperate with other databases?
  • Corrections: Can an error be flagged, traced back and removed without erasing the original audit history?

These details help distinguish an AI-assisted observation from an untraceable synthetic contribution. They also let outside researchers assess bias, coverage gaps and the limits of a model instead of treating a polished output as a fact.

Two current participation contexts, compared

The available public descriptions illustrate two different ways readers encounter AI and citizen science. The EU-Citizen.Science directory currently lists 10 projects tagged “Artificial Intelligence,” including CheckIron, ENFORCE, PataFEST, amai!, FOOTPRINTS-CITSCI, SOLARIS and MonuMAI, plus a machine-learning project focused on older people and caregivers. Directory entries provide status, date, geography, topics and participation metadata, but the directory listing alone does not establish identical validation procedures across projects.

The Australian Citizen Science Association’s 2024–25 Great Barrier Reef review covers a broader stewardship program: more than 40 activities involving more than 140 groups. It reports that 94% of surveyed project leaders said some or all participants also took part in Reef stewardship. The review produced project guidelines, data standards and an expert list, and directs prospective participants to SciStarter Australia.

Trust and participation question EU-Citizen.Science AI-tagged projects Australian Great Barrier Reef review
AI-use disclosure Projects are tagged for an AI connection; the directory snapshot does not state a common disclosure format. AI use is not stated as a single program-wide feature in the review.
Provenance and auditability Metadata such as status, date and geography is listed; project-level audit details vary and are not stated uniformly. Data standards and guidelines were produced; record-level audit procedures are not stated.
Human validation Not stated uniformly across the 10 directory entries. An expert list supports the program, but a single validation protocol is not stated.
Data standards and interoperability Not stated uniformly in the directory listing. Data standards are an explicit output of the review.
Participant agency and learning Participation metadata is provided, but learning arrangements differ by project and are not stated as one standard. Stewardship participation is documented; 94% of surveyed leaders reported some or all participants also took part in it.
Inclusion and access Geography and participation metadata are available; accessibility provisions differ by project and are not stated uniformly. More than 140 groups are represented; detailed access provisions are not stated.
Environmental cost of AI Not stated in the directory snapshot. Not stated in the review summary.
Scientific or stewardship outcome Topics and project status are listed, but outcomes differ by project. Reef stewardship, guidelines, data standards and an expert list are reported outputs.

This comparison is not a ranking. It shows why a project label or a large participant count is not enough: readers need the workflow-level information behind each published record.

Checks that can stop questionable submissions

For project teams

  1. Declare the boundary. State whether AI may assist data entry, enhance media, suggest identifications, reject outliers or make decisions. Prohibit undisclosed generation of observations.
  2. Capture provenance at intake. Store submitter identity or chosen pseudonym, timestamp, location precision, original file and relevant sensor or device details. Keep the original alongside any transformed copy.
  3. Separate machine suggestions from accepted records. Label confidence scores and model suggestions as provisional until a defined human check is complete.
  4. Use risk-based review. Require more than one qualified review, expert escalation or additional evidence for rare species, unusual locations, consequential alerts and records that differ sharply from local patterns.
  5. Publish standards and change logs. Explain required fields, uncertainty handling, model versions, retraining dates and correction procedures so another researcher can interpret the dataset later.
  6. Measure participation quality, not only volume. Give volunteers meaningful opportunities to learn, question classifications and see how their contributions affect the scientific or stewardship outcome.

For volunteers and readers

  • Look for an AI-use statement and a description of who validates records.
  • Check whether the project preserves original media and reports location, date and uncertainty rather than presenting only a model’s label.
  • Ask how disagreements, suspected fabrications and corrected records are handled.
  • Prefer projects that publish data standards, methods and contact details for reporting an error.
  • Treat a high-confidence AI label as a recommendation, not independent proof, when the project does not describe human review.

Where to find legitimate opportunities

The EU-Citizen.Science directory is a starting point for browsing the 10 projects currently tagged “Artificial Intelligence”; each entry supplies status, date, geography, topic and participation information that readers can inspect before joining. In Australia, the Great Barrier Reef review points prospective participants to SciStarter Australia. In either case, read the individual project’s methods and consent information rather than assuming that an AI tag or a conservation theme guarantees the same safeguards everywhere.

The practical standard for the next phase

AI can extend the reach of citizen science, but scale without traceability turns a shared evidence base into an opaque stream of guesses. The most defensible projects disclose where data came from, identify every AI intervention, retain human review, publish usable standards and keep volunteers involved in interpretation and learning. Those measures address the documented weaknesses—quality variation, opacity, bias, accountability and unequal access—without discarding the computational help that makes larger investigations possible.
