The Citizen AQ4091-56W is a 40 mm Eco-Drive watch whose deep-green dial is made from hand-dyed Tosa washi paper. Citizen announced the Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Edition as a 650-piece worldwide release, pairing the distinctive paper dial with a Super Titanium case and bracelet.
What makes the AQ4091-56W’s washi dial unusual?
The dial uses Tosa washi paper dyed by artisans in two stages: yellow dye made from ibuki kariyasu grass is layered with indigo to create a traditional green called chitose midori. Citizen says the dial’s depth shifts with the light, so the paper texture and color are central to the watch’s design rather than a printed imitation of paper.

Citizen’s 19 March 2026 announcement describes the dial as “Japanese washi paper, dyed in chitose midori, a traditional Japanese green pigment created through a fusion of indigo and yellow ibuki kariyasu plant dyes.”

Eco-Drive is light-powered, and the A060’s power-save figure is conditional: Citizen specifies up to 18 months from a full charge when the watch is in power-save mode. The ±5-seconds-per-year figure is the manufacturer’s stated rating, not a result from independent testing.

Citizen says Super Titanium is approximately 40% lighter and approximately five times harder than stainless steel, and highlights its corrosion resistance and skin comfort. Those comparisons are Citizen’s material claims; they should not be read as independent measurements of this particular watch.
Price, launch timing and availability
Citizen’s global announcement scheduled the launch for May 2026 and projected a price of USD 3,100. The Japanese announcement listed a planned retail price of JPY 462,000 including tax. These are announced, market-specific prices, not a guarantee of today’s transaction price in every country.

Citizen’s US product page showed the AQ4091-56W as sold out when checked on 3 October 2026. That status does not establish whether independent retailers or other markets have stock; check the local Citizen site or an authorized retailer for current availability.

How it differs from Citizen’s later washi-dial models
The AQ4091-56W is the 40 mm green, hand-dyed Tosa washi model. It is distinct from the AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B, which Citizen announced on 17 September 2026 for an October-scheduled release. The AQ4100-65X uses dark-red Tosa Tengujoshi paper; the AQ4106-00B uses Unryushi paper with long and gold fibers. Citizen’s announcement gives those later watches 38.3 mm cases, so they differ in both paper treatment and dimensions.

When comparing washi-dial Citizens, check the paper and dye or finishing method alongside case size, movement accuracy and reserve, water resistance, case and bracelet treatment, edition size, and local price and stock. The paper types and dimensions are not interchangeable just because all three watches use Japanese paper dials.
