Treat neither pair as an authenticated definitive target.
What are Citi’s new Bitcoin and Ether targets for 2027?
Investing.com’s October 1 article labels $181,000 for Bitcoin (BTC) and $5,400 for Ether (ETH) as Citi’s 12-month targets. It separately gives $132,000 for Bitcoin and $4,500 for Ether as year-end forecasts. Reuters, also reporting on October 1, gives Citi’s 12-month targets as $113,000 and $3,028, respectively. Those are materially different accounts, not interchangeable estimates.

The $181,000/$5,400 and $113,000/$3,028 pairs are both described as 12-month targets, yet differ substantially. No original Citi note was available in the cited reports to explain the discrepancy. The $132,000/$4,500 pair has a different horizon in Investing.com’s account, so it should not be compared as if it were another 12-month target.
Why did the reports say Citi raised its outlook?
Reuters attributes its October revision to stronger crypto activity, a supportive macro backdrop and resumed exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows. It reports that Citi forecast $5 billion of crypto inflows over the following 12 months. Reuters also says the bank expected flows to return more slowly and steadily, as advisers and brokerages gradually increased Bitcoin allocations.

The Reuters account gives context for the revision: it says Bitcoin had risen nearly 40% and Ether 68% over the prior three months as of October 1, 2026. Those are dated performance figures, not current returns. Reuters also reports Citi’s July 1 forecast baseline of $82,000 for Bitcoin and $2,240 for Ether over the next year, with bear-case estimates of $53,000 and $1,094. In July, according to Reuters, Citi had cut its targets after reducing its assumed 12-month net ETF inflows from $10 billion to zero, citing weaker appetite, ETF outflows and slow U.S. legislation.
What assumptions sit behind the forecasts?
Flows, institutions and regulation
Investing.com says Citi expected continued institutional and financial-adviser allocations, supported by what the article describes as a favorable regulatory environment, particularly in the United States. It says Citi favored Bitcoin because of its larger market size, longer history and more established digital-gold narrative. Reuters’ account likewise describes a gradual return of adviser and brokerage allocations. These are assumptions behind the outlook, not guarantees of future inflows.

Regulatory conditions were not presented as uniformly positive. Reuters says Citi viewed developments as partly offsetting the Senate’s failure to advance the Clarity Act. It attributes this statement to Citi, without naming an individual speaker: “The Clarity Act’s failure narrowed the path to a market-structure bill, yet spurred Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rule announcements that dampened negative sentiment,” Citi said.
Macro conditions and Bitcoin scenarios
Investing.com’s account describes offsetting macro signals: positive expected 12-month equity returns on one side, and forecasts of a stronger U.S. dollar and weaker gold prices on the other. It reports a Bitcoin adoption-model estimate of $83,000, within a $70,000–$95,000 range, and says Bitcoin was trading above that estimate at the time. The article links the range to ETF flows and regulation. It describes the bear case as involving recession and weaker equities, and the bull case as depending on stronger flows.

Why Ether is harder to value
Investing.com says Citi flagged uncertainty in estimating Ether’s value because user activity is difficult to model and it is unclear how much value accrues to Layer-2 networks. The account also says even modest buying could move Ether significantly. It reports that Bitcoin flows explained 42% of return variation and that Ether ETF flows had 18% “exploratory power.” The underlying Citi methodology is not available in the cited accounts, so those measures should not be read as a complete explanation of price movements or as a direct forecast of returns.

These are reported forecasts, not current prices or promised outcomes. Their main limitation is not merely that market projections can be wrong: the October 1 reports conflict over the 12-month target pair itself. Without the original Citi note, readers cannot determine from these accounts which pair reflects the bank’s intended figures or why the two reports differ. The assumptions also depend on uncertain ETF and adviser flows, regulatory developments, macro conditions, and—in Ether’s case—network activity and Layer-2 value capture.

For a broader historical comparison, Reuters’ July figures show how materially the outlook changed when its reported ETF-flow assumptions shifted. They do not resolve which October target pair is correct.
