Citigroup’s credit-card charge-off rate was 2.18% in September 2026, according to an October 15 report citing a Citigroup filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The same report put the credit-card delinquency rate at 1.35% at the end of September. The figures describe different stages of credit performance: charge-offs are loans recognized as losses, while delinquencies are balances overdue but not yet written off.
What the 2.18% figure means
A charge-off is the point at which a bank removes a loan balance from its books as a recognized credit loss under its accounting policy. For Citi credit-card loans, interest generally continues to accrue until charge-off, which typically occurs after 180 days of contractual delinquency. The 2.18% figure is therefore a loss-flow measure for September, not the percentage of every card account that was late during the month.

The reported 1.35% delinquency rate is a separate month-end measure. It captures card balances that were past due but had not yet reached the bank’s charge-off threshold. Because an account can become delinquent before it is charged off, the two rates should not be added together or treated as competing estimates of the same event.

| Indicator | Reported value | Period and interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Credit-card charge-offs | 2.18% | September 2026; balances recognized as credit losses during the month, as reported from a Citi SEC filing |
| Credit-card delinquencies | 1.35% | At September 30, 2026; balances past due but not yet charged off |
The contemporaneous report is the cited source for both percentages. The exact September filing page containing the rates was not directly retrievable, so the figures should be read as reported values attributed to an SEC filing rather than as independently recalculated rates.

How the result fits Citi’s third quarter
Citi’s third-quarter earnings release, dated October 13, 2026, provides the broader financial setting:
- Total revenue: $23.845 billion.
- Net income attributable to Citigroup: $5.245 billion.
- Net credit losses: $2.217 billion.
- Total provision for credit losses: $2.586 billion.
- U.S. Consumer Cards net credit losses: $1.7 billion, down 4% from a year earlier.
U.S. Consumer Cards generated $4.7 billion in revenue, unchanged year over year. Net interest income increased 6%. Non-interest revenue declined 62%, reflecting higher partner-payment accruals and rewards costs, partly offset by higher interchange and annual-fee revenue.

Why comparisons can be misleading
Charge-offs versus delinquencies
A charge-off records a realized accounting loss after an account reaches the bank’s write-off policy. Delinquency is an earlier warning condition. A month with elevated delinquencies can precede higher charge-offs, but timing differs because accounts must pass through the contractual delinquency process first.

September versus the third quarter
The 2.18% rate refers to one month. Citi’s revenue, net income, provision and net-credit-loss figures are quarterly totals for the three months ended September 30. A monthly annualized rate, a quarterly rate and a quarter-to-date dollar loss are not interchangeable without the underlying balance denominator and methodology.
Consolidated Citi versus U.S. Consumer Cards
The charge-off and delinquency percentages were reported as credit-card metrics, while the $1.7 billion net-credit-loss figure is specifically for U.S. Consumer Cards. Consolidated Citigroup results include other businesses and portfolios, so the card rate should not be presented as Citi’s overall companywide loss rate.

Bank portfolios versus securitized trusts
SEC trust reports may use different portfolio definitions, servicing arrangements or balance denominators. Loss and delinquency numbers from a securitized credit-card trust should not be assumed to match Citi’s consolidated figures.

What readers can conclude
The clearest takeaway is that Citi reported a 2.18% September credit-card charge-off rate alongside a 1.35% month-end delinquency rate. Those numbers indicate different points in the credit cycle and need portfolio scope, balance denominator and accounting basis before they can be compared with another bank or another reporting period. Citi’s third-quarter release simultaneously showed $1.7 billion in U.S. Consumer Cards net credit losses, down 4% year over year, within a quarter that produced $23.845 billion in companywide revenue.
