Short answer: the best Cisco Meraki alternative depends on what you are replacing. Choose Ubiquiti UniFi when you want a gateway and centrally managed network without a UniFi cloud-management license; HPE Networking Instant On when simple app-managed Wi-Fi and switching matter most; Fortinet when branch security and unified firewall, switching, wireless, and cellular management are the priority; and investigate TP-Link Omada SDN when you want a broad business-networking family but are prepared to verify branch-security and SD-WAN details yourself. None should be treated as an automatic, feature-for-feature replacement. Match the complete design, subscriptions, operating model, and support requirements before buying.
What Cisco Meraki represents in a branch network
Cisco Meraki is a cloud-managed platform spanning wireless access points, switches, security appliances, SD-WAN, mobile-device management, cameras, and sensors. Its central value is operational: an administrator can configure and monitor distributed equipment from one dashboard, use APIs, and provision a remote site without sending a specialist to every location.

A useful small-branch reference is the Meraki MX68W. Cisco lists support for up to 50 users, 700 Mbps firewall throughput, 300 Mbps site-to-site VPN throughput, and integrated Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac Wave 2). Those are Cisco’s published specifications, not independent performance tests, and actual capacity depends on enabled security services, traffic patterns, and topology. The model illustrates the kind of combined firewall, VPN, wireless, and centralized-management appliance many buyers are trying to replace.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- One dashboard for several offices and repeatable remote deployment.
- An integrated firewall, VPN, SD-WAN, and security-service stack.
- Wireless access points and wired switching that share a management system.
- A different licensing or subscription model.
- Less dependence on a vendor-hosted control plane, or more local control.
An alternative can satisfy one of these goals while being a poor substitute for another. A Wi-Fi-and-switching system is not equivalent to a branch firewall and SD-WAN platform merely because both have a mobile app.
Alternative platforms at a glance
| Platform | Management model | What it is strongest at | What must be verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubiquiti UniFi | Cloud Gateway, local console, official hosted management, or self-hosted control plane; Ubiquiti documents license-free cloud management. | Unified routing, security, switching, and wireless administration with a choice of where the controller runs. | Exact firewall, VPN, threat-protection, cellular-failover, and multi-site features for the selected gateway; who will operate the chosen control plane. |
| HPE Networking Instant On | App-based setup and monitoring for access points, switches, and gateways. | Straightforward small-business Wi-Fi and switching deployment. | Whether the selected gateway design provides the required firewall depth, VPN topology, SD-WAN behavior, logging, and branch scale. |
| Fortinet | FortiManagement Cloud can manage FortiGate, FortiSwitch, FortiAP, and FortiExtender devices. | Security-centered branch operations, templates, zero-touch deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and network cloning. | Subscription tiers, supported models, sizing under enabled security inspection, cellular requirements, and staff skills. |
| TP-Link Omada SDN | Business networking family with a software-defined networking approach. | A candidate for integrated access points, switches, gateways, and centralized administration. | The specific branch firewall, WAN, VPN, SD-WAN, security-service, and multi-site capabilities of the proposed models; the available evidence does not establish feature parity with a specified Meraki design. |
Define the replacement you actually need
Multi-site administration
List every location, the number of devices at each, and who will perform daily changes. Confirm whether one administrator can create a template, apply it to all sites, schedule firmware updates, and see alerts in one view. Ask how a new branch is claimed, what credentials are needed, and whether zero-touch deployment works when the equipment is shipped directly to a nontechnical employee.
Also identify the control-plane dependency. A hosted service may simplify access and updates but requires an active vendor account and a working path to the service. A local or self-hosted controller can provide more control, yet it creates backup, patching, availability, and recovery duties for your team.

WAN, VPN, and SD-WAN load
- Record each site’s internet download and upload speed, provider, static-address requirements, and expected growth.
- Count WAN circuits and decide whether failover, load balancing, or policy-based steering is required.
- Document site-to-site VPN topology, remote-user VPN needs, encryption standards, and the number of tunnels.
- Identify latency-sensitive applications such as voice, video, point-of-sale systems, and cloud desktops.
- Specify whether cellular backup is needed and how much data it may consume.
Do not size a replacement from an advertised firewall number alone. Inspection features, VPN encryption, concurrent sessions, and application-control policies can materially change usable throughput. Obtain model-level figures for the exact configuration you plan to run.
Security scope
Write down the controls that are mandatory: stateful firewalling, intrusion prevention, malware or threat intelligence, DNS or content filtering, application control, secure remote access, audit logging, and retention. For each candidate, ask which functions are included in the hardware, which require a subscription, and which are unavailable on the selected model. A statement that security is “included” is a vendor claim about that product family; it does not prove equivalent detection, update cadence, reporting, or policy depth compared with another vendor’s stack.

Wireless and switching inventory
Count indoor and outdoor coverage areas, expected clients, wall and ceiling materials, guest networks, voice or IoT networks, wired ports, PoE loads, uplink speeds, and any need for redundant switches. Separate the access-point count from the gateway requirement. A platform may manage both, but the hardware and licensing for each still affect capacity and cost.
Lifecycle and operating cost
Request a bill of materials and a quote for the same site count, gateway capacity, access points, switches, security services, support term, and expected ownership period. Include replacement hardware, cloud-management charges, software subscriptions, cellular data, installation, and the labor to operate a controller. Comparable current regional totals were not established here, so no platform can honestly be called the universal low-cost winner.

UniFi is the closest fit when the goal is a centrally administered hardware network without a UniFi cloud-management license. Ubiquiti recommends beginning with a Cloud Gateway for most deployments and identifies the UCG-Ultra as a compact device for small-to-mid-sized deployments. The Cloud Gateway approach combines routing, security functions, and UniFi management software in one appliance, while UniFi also documents local consoles, official hosted management, and self-hosting.
Why it fits
- You can choose where management runs instead of accepting only one control-plane model.
- A gateway can combine routing and management, reducing the number of separate controller components at a small site.
- One UniFi environment can cover gateways, switches, and access points when the selected models support the needed features.
What the buyer must own
Control-plane choice is a responsibility, not just a feature. A local console needs physical protection, backups, and a recovery plan. Self-hosting requires an appropriately secured and maintained server or virtual machine. Hosted management reduces infrastructure work but introduces account, connectivity, and service-dependency considerations. Confirm the exact VPN topology, WAN-failover behavior, threat-protection performance, logging, and cellular options of the chosen Cloud Gateway; the UCG-Ultra is an alternative component, not a one-box guarantee of full Meraki parity.

Where caution is required
The available product information does not establish equivalent firewall, SD-WAN, multi-branch, or advanced security capability to a particular Meraki design. Ask for documented limits on WAN links, VPN tunnels, throughput with security services enabled, policy granularity, alerting, APIs, and offline operation. If your branch requires layered threat inspection, complex traffic steering, or cellular failover, evaluate the gateway as seriously as the access points.
Fortinet: security-first branch architecture
Fortinet’s FortiManagement Cloud brings FortiGate firewalls, FortiSwitch switches, FortiAP access points, and FortiExtender cellular gateways into one dashboard. Fortinet describes provisioning, monitoring, maintenance, zero-touch deployment, templates, and network cloning across multiple sites. This makes it a strong candidate when the security appliance is the center of the branch design and the rest of the network should be managed around it.
Strengths for distributed offices
- Templates and cloning can reduce repetitive configuration across similar branches.
- Zero-touch workflows can help ship equipment directly to a site with limited technical staff.
- Firewall, switching, wireless, and cellular families can be viewed through the same management service.
Questions to resolve before purchase
Confirm which FortiManagement Cloud functions and FortiGate security services require subscriptions, how long logs are retained, and what support level is included. Size the FortiGate for encrypted VPN traffic and all enabled inspection, not just raw firewall throughput. Verify FortiSwitch, FortiAP, and FortiExtender support for the exact models and software versions. Finally, assess whether your staff can operate policy objects, security profiles, updates, and incident troubleshooting; a powerful security platform can increase workload when no trained operator is available.
TP-Link Omada SDN: investigate as a product family
TP-Link Omada SDN belongs on a shortlist when you want a business-networking family spanning gateways, switches, and access points with centralized administration. However, the available official material does not provide enough captured detail to substantiate particular branch-security, WAN, or SD-WAN comparisons. Treat Omada as a candidate for a requirements-driven evaluation, not a verified feature-for-feature Meraki substitute.

Request a written design using the exact gateway, switch, and access-point models. Require explicit answers about site-to-site VPN topology, dual-WAN behavior, cellular failover, intrusion prevention, content filtering, centralized logs, zero-touch provisioning, controller hosting, and support terms. Reject any proposal that answers only with a product-family name.
Build an apples-to-apples branch design
Example: a 50-user branch
Use the MX68W reference point only as a sizing prompt: Cisco lists up to 50 users, 700 Mbps firewall throughput, 300 Mbps site-to-site VPN throughput, and integrated Wi-Fi 5. For each alternative, create a design that supports the same user count, internet speed, VPN demand, wireless coverage, wired ports, guest isolation, and security controls. Record the conditions behind every number, including whether inspection or encryption is enabled.
Bill of materials checklist
- Gateway or firewall model and software tier.
- Number and model of access points, including outdoor units if required.
- Switch count, PoE budget, port speeds, and uplinks.
- Controller, Cloud Gateway, local console, hosted service, or self-hosted server.
- Security, support, firmware, logging, and cloud-management subscriptions.
- WAN circuits, cellular modem or gateway, antennas, and expected data usage.
- Installation, configuration, migration, documentation, and staff training.
A migration process that limits branch risk
- Inventory the current site. Export VLANs, DHCP scopes, firewall rules, VPN peers, DNS settings, wireless networks, switch ports, PoE devices, and monitoring destinations. Record dependencies such as payment terminals and building systems.
- Define acceptance tests. Set measurable targets for internet throughput, VPN reachability, failover time, guest isolation, roaming, voice quality, logging, and administrator access.
- Validate the proposed models. Check throughput with the intended security services, supported tunnel counts, WAN interfaces, PoE budgets, radio capabilities, and software versions. Do not rely on a family-level brochure.
- Build the control plane first. Create organizations, sites, roles, templates, backups, alert routing, and update policies. Decide who can make emergency changes and how access is recovered if the primary administrator is unavailable.
- Stage equipment off-site. Apply naming, firmware, VLANs, SSIDs, certificates, and baseline policies before shipping. Test that a reset device can be reclaimed without exposing credentials.
- Pilot one branch. Run the new network beside the old one where possible, test business applications at peak load, and verify remote management from a different internet connection.
- Cut over during a recovery window. Save the old configuration, label cables, keep rollback hardware available, and change DNS or routing only after local connectivity and management are confirmed.
- Operate and review. Monitor alerts, VPN stability, firmware changes, log retention, and license status for several weeks. Update the standard template only after the pilot has proved stable.
Common selection and deployment mistakes
Comparing an access-point package with a security appliance
Wireless coverage, switching, firewall inspection, SD-WAN, and VPN are separate capacity questions. A low-cost access-point bundle cannot be judged against a complete branch stack without adding the missing gateway, controller, subscriptions, and support.
Ignoring subscription boundaries
Ask which features stop working, lose updates, or become unmanageable when a subscription expires. Include renewal dates and ownership-transfer procedures in your documentation.
Assuming cloud management equals zero operations
Cloud dashboards simplify configuration but do not eliminate identity management, backups, firmware planning, incident response, or local cabling failures. Assign an owner for each task and test account recovery before deployment.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Under-sizing encrypted traffic
VPN encryption and threat inspection can reduce practical throughput. Test with representative traffic and the policies you will actually enable; do not compare a headline firewall number with an encrypted branch workload.
Leaving failover untested
A second WAN link or cellular gateway has value only if routing, health checks, DNS behavior, VPN re-establishment, and application sessions recover as expected. Schedule a controlled outage test and document the observed recovery time.
Skipping an exit plan
Keep exported configurations, network diagrams, licensing records, and local credentials in a secure repository. Document how to restore service if the management service is unreachable, an administrator leaves, or a device must be replaced under time pressure.
Which alternative fits which situation?
| Your priority | Most logical starting point | Reason to reject the first choice |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible local, hosted, or self-hosted management with a gateway-centered UniFi design | Ubiquiti UniFi | Reject if the selected gateway cannot document your required VPN, inspection, failover, or logging limits. |
| Simple app-managed Wi-Fi and switching for a conventional small office | HPE Networking Instant On | Reject if the branch needs advanced firewall, SD-WAN, or security controls not documented for the gateway. |
| Security-led multi-site operations with firewall, switching, wireless, and cellular in one management view | Fortinet | Reject if subscription cost, sizing, or operator expertise does not fit the organization. |
| A broad networking family that merits a detailed gateway and controller evaluation | TP-Link Omada SDN | Reject until the vendor or reseller supplies model-specific evidence for every required branch function. |
The defensible buying decision is the design that meets your WAN, VPN, security, wireless, lifecycle, and staffing requirements at the same site count—not the platform with the shortest feature list or the lowest unscoped hardware price.
