CIS Compliance: What an IBM i Assessment Tool Can—and Can’t—Automate

For IBM i teams, a CIS compliance tool can automate repeatable benchmark checks and produce reports, but it is not a one-click certificate or a substitute for choosing the right baseline, reviewing changes, and meeting the rest of your organization’s obligations. Vanguard Integrity Professionals’ eBook describes Vanguard Compliance Manager for IBM i (VCMi) as a tool for assessing IBM i configurations against selected CIS baselines. Its claims about speed and accuracy are vendor claims, not independently validated results.

What does “CIS compliance” mean in this context?

The title refers to assessing system settings against a CIS Benchmark—not to a universal certification that automatically satisfies every law, regulation, contract, or internal policy. A benchmark assessment can help identify whether configuration settings match a selected security profile. Whether that evidence meets a particular audit or regulatory requirement depends on the requirement and the rest of the organization’s controls.

The Center for Internet Security (CIS) describes the broader challenge this way: “Securing infrastructure to meet the most widely used compliance frameworks simply takes too much time, effort, and money for most organizations to adequately ensure at scale.” That institutional statement explains the appeal of automation; it does not establish that any specific tool or deployment satisfies a framework.

What VCMi says it automates for IBM i

Vanguard’s 14-page eBook describes VCMi as an IBM i product. Administrators select a CIS baseline and security level—the eBook refers to Level 1 and Level 2—and the interface groups checks by IBM i operating-system version, baseline, and category. The eBook describes launching a CIS benchmark audit, checking configuration settings against CIS references, and presenting results and reports. It says check identifiers correspond to benchmark chapters, sections, and security levels.

The eBook describes navigation through menus in an emulated 5250 terminal session. It says that after configuration, the product checks the system against the selected benchmark level and generates reports intended for auditors or executives. These are descriptions and claims from the vendor; they do not establish current product coverage, report formats, or independent effectiveness.

Performance claims need attribution

Vanguard’s eBook claims “hundreds of configuration checks in minutes” and says manual audits that traditionally take weeks can be reduced to hours. The eBook does not disclose a comparison method, and no independent timing study or named statistic validating those claims was identified. Treat them as promotional claims, not expected results for every environment.

The same eBook says automated checklist enforcement ensures flawless execution. That absolute claim is not independently established. Automation can make repeatable checks more consistent, but its output still depends on the selected baseline, the tool’s coverage, and how results are reviewed.

Which baseline and platform should you verify?

A CIS assessment is only useful when its benchmark matches the system and security profile being assessed. Before relying on VCMi, confirm its coverage for your exact IBM i operating-system releases, CIS Benchmark versions, and chosen level. The current supported-version matrix was not available in the sources reviewed, so do not assume that a particular release or benchmark is covered.

  • Platform: Confirm that the product supports the IBM i systems in scope, not just IBM i generally.
  • Benchmark: Identify the specific CIS Benchmark version represented in the tool.
  • Profile: Confirm whether the checks correspond to the Level 1 or Level 2 profile you intend to use, and whether that profile suits your operational requirements.
  • Evidence: Ask for a sample report and confirm which findings, benchmark references, and system details it contains.

Assessment, remediation, and evidence are different jobs

The eBook describes configuration checks and reporting. It does not establish which settings VCMi changes automatically, what approval controls it provides, how rollback works, or which evidence-export formats and integrations are available. Do not infer that “compliance automation” means the product safely remediates every finding.

Before adopting any tool, map its capabilities to the work your team must own:

  • Be able to create and read and write files on the IFS from an RPG program
  • Understand how to prevent and correct user errors in .csv import files
  • Be able to create beautiful interactive charts directly from your RPG code without having to learn a new programming language
  • Assessment: Which settings does it inspect, and how are unsupported or unassessed checks shown?
  • Remediation: Does it only identify deviations, or can it change settings? For each automated change, clarify prerequisites, approvals, testing, and rollback.
  • Evidence: What can be exported, how is it tied to a benchmark version and system, and can the output support your audit process?
  • Ongoing control: Can the tool detect configuration drift on a recurring schedule, or does it provide only an on-demand assessment?

A narrow Linux example shows why the distinction matters: Automox’s Worklet for disabling root SSH login documents prerequisites, validation commands, and repeat evaluation. It illustrates a discrete, platform-specific hardening task; it does not demonstrate IBM i coverage or an end-to-end compliance capability.

How do the examples differ in scope?

Example Scope described by its source What it does not establish
VCMi Vanguard describes it as IBM i-specific CIS benchmark assessment and reporting. Current IBM i release and benchmark-version coverage, remediation behavior, export formats, integrations, licensing, or independent performance.
CIS and Puppet materials CIS and Puppet describe CIS-CAT Pro Assessor integration with Puppet Comply and compliance-enforcement modules built to enforce CIS Benchmarks. Current product status or IBM i coverage; the materials do not prove that a deployment satisfies a specific compliance program.
Automox Worklet example A vendor technical page documents one Linux SSH root-login hardening task, including prerequisites and validation. An IBM i compliance option or a complete CIS assessment and compliance program.

These examples are not interchangeable substitutes. When comparing options, check operating-system and benchmark coverage, assessment versus remediation, change controls, recurring drift detection, evidence outputs, configuration-management integrations, platform expertise, support, and the implementation work your organization retains.

What remains to verify before choosing VCMi?

A TechChannel article dated October 6, 2025, sponsored by Vanguard, characterizes VCMi as a CIS-based IBM i compliance product and advertises Vanguard support and a 90-day proof of concept. Because the article is sponsored and the offer may change, verify current terms directly before relying on either detail.

The available descriptions do not resolve VCMi’s current supported IBM i releases and benchmark versions, remediation controls, evidence-export formats, integrations, licensing, or independent performance. Request current product documentation and answers for your specific environment rather than treating the eBook’s workflow description as a current support commitment.

What should an IBM i team still own?

Software can reduce repetitive configuration review, but it does not decide which baseline is appropriate, approve a potentially disruptive change, or interpret every organizational obligation. A workable process assigns people to select and document the baseline, review findings, test and approve changes, validate the resulting system, retain suitable evidence, and revisit configuration as systems and requirements change. Practitioner discussions about managing client regulations reflect that operational reality; they are perspectives, not formal compliance guidance.
