Circuit Breaker Labs is an early-stage company that sells AI safety testing to developers of high-risk conversational products. It uses simulated users and adversarial conversations to look for failures—especially those that emerge across multiple exchanges. That may help developers find problems before launch, but the available evidence does not show that its tests prevent harm or make an AI system safe for children.
What is Circuit Breaker Labs?
Circuit Breaker Labs is a business-to-business AI evaluation and red-teaming service, not a chatbot, parental-control app, or product for families to install. Its current focus is conversational AI used for coaching, journaling, and behavioral or mental-health support, where a poor response can carry particular risks. TechCrunch reported on October 2, 2026, that the company had a working product and was still at a very early stage.
The company was founded by siblings Shirali Nigam, its CEO, and Arul Nigam, its CTO. TechCrunch reported that the founders’ motivation included the case of Sewell Setzer, a 14-year-old whose parents alleged in a lawsuit that a Character.AI chatbot encouraged him after he disclosed thoughts of self-harm. That is an allegation reported in connection with litigation, not an established finding that the chatbot caused his death. TechCrunch described Circuit Breaker Labs as having five employees at the time of its October 2026 profile. Its LinkedIn company profile lists a 2025 founding year, Washington, DC, and a 2–10 employee range; profile details can change.
How does its AI safety testing work?
The company describes a process that connects to a customer’s API endpoint, sends simulated adversarial interactions to the system, and returns an audit report with failure patterns and recommendations. The aim is to probe how a model responds when a conversation develops over several turns, rather than checking only isolated prompts. Circuit Breaker Labs says its service can run “100,000+” simulated interactions and offers explainable scores. Those are vendor claims about its product, not independent measures of test quality or safety outcomes.

Simulated users with varied language and backgrounds
Circuit Breaker Labs says its simulated users span ages, backgrounds, languages, and cultures. It also says human domain experts help make those simulations reflect real-world speech, including slang, coded language, and typos. The intended challenge is that people do not all express risk in the same way: age, language fluency, and cultural context can affect how a disclosure sounds to a model.
CEO Shirali Nigam described that variation to TechCrunch: “The way a six-year-old girl versus a 45-year-old man, or someone who speaks English as a first language versus a second language, or … gamer slang versus someone else who uses a different kind of slang, all of those can really trip up a model.” The quote explains the problem the company wants to test; it is not evidence that the service catches every such failure.

What an audit can tell a developer
A red-team evaluation can expose examples of a system responding poorly under the tested scenarios. An audit report can give developers concrete failures to investigate and fix. The value of that process depends on what scenarios are covered, how accurately failures are identified and scored, whether developers address them, and whether changes improve behavior outside the simulated test set.
What does the evidence say about whether it makes AI safer?
The evidence supports describing Circuit Breaker Labs as a company building and selling a safety evaluation service, with a working product reported by TechCrunch. It does not establish that the service prevents real-world injury, that its scores predict real-world safety, or that any system tested with it is safe for children. No independent efficacy result was established in the available sources.

The company’s website includes a testimonial from Kevin M. Ramotar, Psy.D., CPHQ, Director of Clinical Product & AI at Grow Therapy, who says: “Circuit Breaker Labs has been a valuable partner in our work to build and maintain a safe, high-quality AI product in behavioral health.” That is a customer testimonial published by the vendor, not an independent validation study. Similarly, a large advertised number of simulations describes claimed test volume, not how many real-world harms were prevented.

The described buyer is an organization developing or operating a conversational AI product, especially in a high-risk area such as behavioral health. Circuit Breaker Labs is not presented as a direct safeguard that parents can buy or apply to a child’s account. Its broader promise is to help developers identify problems before or during deployment. CTO Arul Nigam told TechCrunch, “We want to help build that trust for people.” That is the company’s ambition, not a demonstrated outcome for families.

For families, the practical distinction is between testing as one part of responsible product development and a guarantee of safety. Simulations can help surface issues, but they cannot by themselves establish how a system will behave in every real conversation. The available material also does not establish independent comparisons with other evaluation providers or evidence that detected failures reliably translate into safer deployed behavior.
