On a supported ColorOS phone, Circle to Search is enabled by updating the Google app, selecting Google as the default digital assistant, allowing screen and app-data access, and then long-pressing the navigation handle or Home button. It is not a universal ColorOS switch: Google limits the feature to selected Android models, and a Chinese-market build may omit it even when it runs ColorOS 15.
What Circle to Search does on a Chinese ColorOS phone
Circle to Search lets you search whatever is currently visible without leaving the app on screen. After it opens, you can circle, highlight, scribble over, or tap an object, text passage, image, or video frame. Google displays results in a panel at the bottom, and you can add words to the search bar to refine the query.

The feature is implemented by Google and exposed through the system assistant gesture. ColorOS supplies the navigation interface, but the phone still needs a supported Android model, a compatible Google app, and the required assistant permissions. ColorOS 15 includes native Circle to Search integration on supported devices; that announcement does not mean every ColorOS 15 phone or every Chinese firmware build receives it.
Availability can vary by exact model, Android and ColorOS build, country, and Google-service configuration. A mainland-China ROM may therefore behave differently from an international ROM with the same hardware name. Treat the checks below as an eligibility test, not as a guarantee that a hidden toggle exists.

There is no separate official “Circle to Search” download that turns any ColorOS phone into a supported model. The feature is delivered through the Google app, Android assistant integration, and the device firmware. Installing random APKs advertised under that name cannot replace the supported system components.
Check these requirements before changing settings
- Supported device: Google describes Circle to Search as a feature for selected Android models. Verify your exact model and region rather than relying only on the ColorOS version.
- Compatible software: OPPO announced the capability for ColorOS 15, but individual builds can receive, delay, or omit it. Install available system updates before troubleshooting.
- Google app and Google services: The Google app must be installed and up to date. Chinese firmware that lacks Google Play or the underlying Google services may not provide the official setup path.
- Assistant access: Google must be selected as the default digital assistant, with permission to use screen and app data (also described in some regions as screenshot access).
- Navigation mode: The activation control changes with your navigation choice. Gesture navigation uses the bottom handle or navigation bar; three-button navigation uses the Home button.
Chrome does not need to be your default browser. Circle to Search works from the system assistant layer, so changing the browser is not a prerequisite.
Before changing anything, note the exact model number, Android release, ColorOS build, navigation mode, and whether Google Play opens normally. Those details make it easier to distinguish a missing permission from a firmware limitation and to restore your previous configuration if necessary.

Confirm the model and ROM are eligible
Open your phone’s
Settingsand check the model name, Android version, and ColorOS version under the device-information page. Then search Settings forCircle to Search. If the phone is a supported model and the feature has been delivered to your build, a related assistant or navigation option should appear. If no result exists, continue with the software and permission checks below; do not assume the feature can be forced by changing one unrelated setting.Compare the complete software build, not just the retail name. An OPPO or OnePlus China edition can share a model family with an international edition while using different system packages, update schedules, and Google-service policies. ColorOS 15 is evidence that the capability may be available, not proof that it is enabled on your particular unit.

Update the Google app
Open
Google Play, tap your profile picture, chooseManage apps and device, openManage, select the Google app, and install any available update. An outdated Google app can hide the setting or fail to respond to the system trigger. If your Chinese ROM has no Play Store or cannot sign in to Google, the official update route may not be available on that firmware.After the update finishes, let the phone complete any pending restart or component update, then search Settings again. Do not confuse the Google app with Chrome, Google Play services, or a third-party search application; the Google app is the component named in the setup instructions, while the other services may also be needed for normal operation.

Make Google the default digital assistant
Go to
Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app. ColorOS translations and releases may use slightly different labels, so use the Settings search field for “digital assistant” if the menu is arranged differently. SelectGooglerather than another assistant or a manufacturer-only service.Some Chinese builds place this control under additional system settings, navigation settings, or default-app management. The important test is the selected assistant, not the exact menu path. If Google is not listed, check that the Google app and required Google services are installed and enabled; changing the launcher will not create this assistant entry.

Allow screen and app-data access
In the same assistant settings, enable
Use screen and app data. Google documentation in some regions calls the equivalent control screenshot access. This permission lets the assistant inspect the content you are viewing so it can identify the item you select. If ColorOS shows a separate confirmation dialog, accept it and return to the assistant settings to verify that the switch remains on.Screen access is a prerequisite, not an optional quality setting. If a system update resets it, the gesture may stop opening Circle to Search or may open an overlay that cannot analyze the current content. Recheck the switch after updating Google, changing assistants, or restoring system settings.

Choose the navigation trigger
With three-button navigation enabled, touch and hold the on-screen
Homebutton. With gesture navigation enabled, touch and hold the bottom navigation handle or bar. A Google Search bar and a visual glow indicate that Circle to Search has opened. A short tap will not activate it; the press must be held until the overlay appears.ColorOS can label the navigation choice as
System navigation,Navigation mode, or a translated equivalent. Change only this navigation setting when testing. If you switch modes, test the matching trigger again: Home belongs to three-button mode, while the handle belongs to gesture mode. -
Select content and refine the search
When the overlay is active, circle or scribble around an object, drag across text, or tap the item you want to identify. Results load in the lower panel while the original app remains visible. Add descriptive words in the search field when the initial result is broad—for example, a color, model, language, or place name. Dismiss the panel when finished to return to the underlying app.
You can search a product in a photograph, a sign in a video, unfamiliar characters, a landmark, or a specific clothing item. A small, precise selection usually gives the system less irrelevant context than circling the whole display. Make another selection while the panel is open if the first one was too broad.

How to use the gesture once it is enabled
Gesture navigation
Place your finger on the bottom navigation handle and hold it rather than swiping upward. The handle can be difficult to see in some full-screen apps; start from the center of the bottom edge where the handle normally appears. If the system hides the handle, temporarily switch to three-button navigation and use Home to determine whether the assistant itself works.
Do not begin with a diagonal swipe or press an edge-control area used by another ColorOS shortcut. The activation is a stationary long press on the handle. Once the glow and Search bar appear, release your finger and mark the content.
Three-button navigation
Press and hold the middle Home button. The Back and Recents buttons do not launch Circle to Search. If a long press opens another assistant, revisit the default digital-assistant setting and make sure Google is selected.

Choosing what to search
Circle to Search is useful for a single product in a photo, a sign in a video, unfamiliar text, or a landmark. A precise selection generally produces a more useful result than circling an entire screen. You can make a second selection while the overlay is open and add words to disambiguate it.
For text, drag across the words rather than drawing a loose circle around an entire paragraph. For a video, pause on a clear frame when possible. Add terms such as a language, color, manufacturer, or location if several results look similar.
Why Circle to Search is missing on Chinese ColorOS
The model is not on Google’s supported list
Google does not promise Circle to Search for every Android phone. Hardware similarity to an international model does not establish eligibility, and a ColorOS version number alone is insufficient evidence.
The Chinese build lacks Google components
Many China-market firmware packages differ in Google Play availability, preinstalled applications, and assistant integration. Without the Google app, its update channel, or the necessary Google services, the official menu may not appear. Installing an unrelated launcher or changing the browser will not supply that system integration.
The feature has not reached that firmware or region
OPPO’s ColorOS 15 announcement describes the capability, while Google’s documentation qualifies availability by device and country. A staged rollout, regional restriction, or carrier-specific package can leave two phones with the same marketed ColorOS release showing different options.

If Google is present but screen/app-data access is disabled, Circle to Search may be absent or may open without being able to analyze the screen. Recheck both the default-assistant selection and the permission switch after every Google-app or system update.
The navigation implementation is different
A ROM can hide the gesture handle, replace the long-press action, or expose only a manufacturer assistant. In that case, repeatedly pressing the wrong edge of the display will not reveal a hidden Circle to Search switch. Test both navigation modes only after confirming that Google is the selected assistant.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No “Circle to Search” result in Settings
- Confirm the exact model, Android release, and ColorOS build.
- Install the latest available Google app update through Google Play.
- Set Google as the default digital assistant.
- Turn on
Use screen and app dataor the equivalent screenshot-access control. - Restart the phone and search Settings again.
If the setting is still absent after these checks, the most likely explanation is that the model or Chinese ROM is unsupported. There may be no official switch to expose.
Long-pressing Home or the handle does nothing
First identify the active navigation mode. Use Home only in three-button mode and the bottom handle only in gesture mode. Test the other mode temporarily. Then verify that Google remains the default assistant; ColorOS updates or a newly installed assistant can change that selection.

If neither trigger responds, open the assistant settings directly and confirm that screen/app-data access is still enabled. A case, screen protector, or touch problem can also make a long press register poorly, but those physical issues do not explain a missing Settings entry.
The overlay opens, but selection is inaccurate
Make a smaller, cleaner circle around the target and add clarifying words in the search bar. Text over busy backgrounds, moving video, and very small objects can require several attempts. This is a recognition limitation rather than a missing permission when the overlay and glow already appear.
The overlay opens but results do not load
Check the phone’s internet connection and whether Google services can connect normally on the Chinese firmware. Circle to Search can open locally while search results remain delayed or incomplete when connectivity, account sign-in, or regional service access is restricted. Try a simple text selection in another app to separate a content problem from a network problem.
The feature worked and then disappeared
Check whether the Google app, ColorOS firmware, or regional configuration changed. An update can remove an experimental device flag or reset assistant permissions. Reapply the official steps before considering any workaround. If an unofficial enabler was installed, its package changes may have been invalidated by the update.
You need visual search on an unsupported phone
Google’s documented alternative is Google Lens through the camera or the Google app. It requires leaving the current screen or sharing an image, but it can identify objects and text when Circle to Search is unavailable.
Official support versus an unofficial enabler
For restricted Chinese ColorOS builds, the open-source OppoCTS project describes an enabler that uses Shizuku permissions and changes package-manager components so Google’s app recognizes the device as supported. This is not a Google or OPPO support procedure. It modifies system behavior and should be treated as an advanced experiment, not as the normal activation method.

Do not use an unofficial enabler merely because a Settings search failed once. Exhaust the supported checks first, back up important data, understand how to undo the changes, and accept that future updates can invalidate the setup. There is no guaranteed success rate, universal package, or official support promise for such a workaround.

OPPO announced Circle to Search as a ColorOS 15 capability and described activating it with a long press of the Home button or navigation bar. That statement establishes that OPPO supports the integration on at least some ColorOS 15 devices; it does not establish universal Chinese-ROM coverage. The exact firmware package, market, Google-service availability, and navigation implementation still determine whether your phone exposes the feature.

Consequently, a phone sold in China can legitimately show a different result from an international unit with the same model family. Check the software build and available Google components rather than treating the sales region as a simple yes-or-no rule.

Privacy and practical considerations
Circle to Search needs permission to inspect screen and app data because that is how it identifies what you select. Review the permission prompt before enabling it, especially on screens containing private messages, account details, documents, or payment information. Avoid selecting sensitive content when a search is unnecessary, and dismiss the overlay when you are done.
Search quality also depends on connectivity and the clarity of the selected content. A weak connection, animated video, tiny text, or an ambiguous object can produce incomplete or broad results even when the feature is correctly installed.
On a shared or work phone, consider whether the account owner permits screen-analysis features. The permission applies to the assistant layer, so it should be treated differently from a normal browser preference. Turning it off removes the feature’s ability to inspect on-screen content until you enable it again.

A short decision path
- ColorOS 15, Google app present, setting visible: update Google, set the assistant, allow screen/app-data access, and use the correct long-press trigger.
- Google app present, setting absent: verify the exact model and region; if all permissions are correct, assume the build is not currently supported.
- No Google Play or Google services: the official ColorOS method may not be available on that Chinese firmware; installing Circle to Search as a separate download is not Google’s supported approach.
- Long press opens another assistant: select Google as the default digital assistant, then repeat the Home or handle test that matches the navigation mode.
- Need the capability despite unsupported firmware: use Google Lens as the supported fallback. Consider an unofficial enabler only if you understand Shizuku, package-manager changes, update breakage, and recovery steps.

If the setting is still missing, ColorOS 15 may not have been enabled for that model or region. Google Lens is the supported fallback; unofficial enablers such as OppoCTS involve system changes and can stop working after updates.
