CI/CD pipelines replace repeated manual handoffs between a code change and a release with a configured workflow that builds, tests, packages, and may deploy the software. They can give developers earlier feedback and make routine steps repeatable—but they do not guarantee bug-free code or safe releases. The key distinction: continuous delivery keeps a release ready for deployment; continuous deployment automatically releases qualifying changes to users.
What is a CI/CD pipeline?
A CI/CD pipeline is an automated workflow that takes software changes through configured steps, commonly including a build, tests and other checks, packaging, and deployment. The workflow is typically defined in configuration files and executed by workers called runners or agents. Its exact stages depend on the project and the risks of releasing it.
CI means continuous integration: developers integrate changes into a shared codebase frequently, with automated validation to catch problems. CD can mean either continuous delivery or continuous deployment. In continuous delivery, changes can be prepared for production while a person or other control determines when to deploy. In continuous deployment, changes that pass the configured checks are deployed to users automatically. GitLab describes this distinction in its CI/CD pipeline explainer.
How a pipeline moves a change toward release
A representative path might look like this:
- A developer commits a change or opens a merge request.
- The pipeline builds the application and runs automated tests and checks.
- If those steps pass, it packages an artifact, such as a deployable application image or bundle.
- The artifact is deployed to a test or staging environment for further verification.
- A production deployment proceeds after an approval or automatically, depending on whether the team practices continuous delivery or continuous deployment.
- The team monitors the release and uses its recovery or rollback procedure if a problem occurs.
This is an example, not a universal recipe. A small library, a mobile app, and a service with production data may need different stages and release controls.

Jobs, stages, and runners
A pipeline is commonly divided into jobs: individual units of work such as compiling code, running tests, or deploying an artifact. Stages group jobs into a broader order. In GitLab, for example, pipelines are configured in .gitlab-ci.yml; jobs run on runners, and stages run sequentially by default while jobs in a stage can run concurrently. GitLab also documents dependency-based needs pipelines, which can let a job start when its required work is complete rather than waiting for an entire earlier stage. See GitLab’s pipeline documentation.
GitHub Actions uses workflows made of jobs, which run on virtual-machine or container runners. Each job contains steps that run scripts or reusable actions; steps run sequentially by default. A workflow can start in response to repository events, a schedule, manual input, or external events. The details are in GitHub’s workflow documentation.

Jenkins represents a pipeline as a workflow that can be kept in a source-controlled Jenkinsfile, covering repeatable build, test, and deployment stages. Its Pipeline documentation describes the model.
What happens when a check fails?
A team can configure a failed job to stop dependent or downstream work—for example, preventing an artifact from reaching production after tests fail. The failure becomes a signal to investigate the change before release. This is useful only to the extent that the checks cover meaningful failure modes: a green pipeline means its configured checks passed, not that every defect has been ruled out.

What CI/CD streamlines—and what it does not
The practical gain comes from replacing repeated manual steps with a consistent workflow and surfacing build or test feedback earlier. Frequent, smaller integrations can also make a problem easier to narrow down than a large batch of changes. GitLab’s descriptions of continuous integration and delivery working together explain these intended benefits.
These are capabilities, not guaranteed outcomes. A pipeline with weak tests can pass code that later fails; a brittle workflow can delay releases; and automating a deployment does not make the deployment safe by itself. Teams need to maintain the workflow, keep checks relevant, and plan for failures as well as successful releases.

Release controls and security boundaries
Testing and deployment safeguards address different risks. Tests check behaviors they cover; release controls govern who or what can deploy and under which conditions. Depending on the platform and infrastructure, useful controls can include:
- Requiring approval before deployment to a production environment.
- Restricting deployments to permitted branches.
- Limiting which jobs and environments can access secrets.
- Controlling concurrent deployments so overlapping releases do not interfere.
- Using short-lived identity mechanisms where supported instead of storing long-lived cloud credentials.
- Monitoring deployments and maintaining a practical recovery or rollback procedure.
GitHub documents environment approvals, branch restrictions, secret access, concurrency controls, and OpenID Connect for supported cloud providers in its continuous deployment guidance. Availability and setup depend on the platform configuration and deployment target; these controls must be deliberately configured.

Choosing a CI/CD platform
There is no universal best platform in the documented options. Start with where the source code lives and what the team needs to operate, then compare runner hosting, configuration and reuse, deployment targets, access controls, observability, maintenance work, and cost for the actual workload.
| Platform | Documented model | Questions to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Actions | Repository workflows with jobs on VM or container runners; scripts and reusable actions; deployment environments and approvals. | Is the code hosted on GitHub? Which runner types and deployment integrations are needed? What environment and secret controls are required? |
| GitLab CI/CD | Jobs, runners, and stages configured in .gitlab-ci.yml, including branch and merge-request pipelines and parallel or dependency-based execution. |
Does the integrated GitLab repository and pipeline model fit the team? How will runners be hosted and secured? |
| Jenkins Pipeline | A pipeline workflow represented in a source-controlled Jenkinsfile, from CI through broader delivery workflows. |
Does the organization need this pipeline model and its associated infrastructure and administration? Which integrations and ongoing operating responsibilities apply? |
The platform documentation cited above does not establish a universal price comparison or plan-specific feature limits. Check current terms and capabilities against your repository, runner setup, and deployment needs before choosing.
A practical way to start
- Choose one reliable path, such as building the main branch and running the tests that already provide useful feedback.
- Make pipeline results visible to the people reviewing changes, and decide which failures should block merging or later stages.
- Add packaging and a non-production deployment when the build and checks are repeatable.
- Before automating production release, decide how approvals, branch restrictions, secret access, monitoring, and recovery will work.
- Extend the workflow gradually, reviewing whether each new job catches a meaningful problem or adds avoidable delay and maintenance.
