Steam also adds achievements, trading cards and Steam Cloud. The exact differences between the Super NES and DS scripts, menus and optional details are not fully documented by the official sources available here, so those finer comparisons should not be treated as settled fact.
What “new collection” means in practice
Chrono Trigger is available in several historically distinct forms rather than one single, unified collection. The relevant modern releases are the refreshed smartphone edition and the PC version sold through Steam. Square Enix’s 2018 materials describe the PC port as based on the smartphone version, while also identifying content that originated with the Nintendo DS release.

That makes the useful comparison a version history: the original Super NES game, the later DS edition, the refreshed mobile release and the Steam port. The core adventure, time-travel structure and combat system remain the foundation throughout. The meaningful changes are extra areas, presentation, controls, saving and platform-specific features.

Chrono Trigger versions at a glance
| Version | What the official record establishes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Original Super NES edition | The baseline release against which later editions are compared. | The supplied official documents do not provide a complete line-by-line account of its script, interface or optional content. |
| Nintendo DS edition | Square Enix associates the Dimensional Vortex, Lost Sanctum and animated sequences with the DS-era version. | The reviewed documents do not settle every DS-versus-Super NES translation or menu difference. |
| Refreshed smartphone edition | Higher-resolution graphics, a sound remaster supervised by Yasunori Mitsuda, the two extra areas, DS animated sequences, TV output and cloud saves. | The free update mentioned for existing smartphone owners was a 2018 offer and should not be read as a current purchase policy. |
| Steam PC launch | Animated cutscenes, Dimensional Vortex, Lost Sanctum, updated controls, graphics and sound, plus Steam achievements, trading cards and Steam Cloud saving. | The launch feature list describes the 2018 release; later patches changed several presentation and interface details. |
| Steam after the documented 2018 patches | Original graphics mode became the default; fonts and text were revised; the opening sequence was reordered; battle interface, map sprites and cutscene display were adjusted; certain slowdowns were fixed. | Those are dated patch records, not a guarantee that every device, operating-system combination or current build behaves identically. |

What stays recognizable from the original
The same central adventure
The newer editions are ports and revisions of Chrono Trigger, not remakes that replace its fundamental game. The time-travel campaign, party-based battles and original progression remain the reason to choose any version. Added areas and audiovisual changes sit around that foundation rather than creating a separate game.
Why the original still matters
The Super NES edition is the cleanest reference point for historical comparisons because it predates the later additions. It is the version to use when your goal is to experience the original presentation rather than the expanded content associated with later releases. However, the official material reviewed for this comparison does not document every difference in its translation, interface or optional systems, so claims about precisely which lines, menus or side activities changed require additional primary documentation.
What the DS-era additions contribute
Two additional areas
Square Enix’s Steam documentation identifies the Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum as content from earlier versions and confirms that both are included in Steam. The mobile announcement likewise lists the two areas among the refreshed release’s additions. These locations are therefore the clearest content distinction between the original baseline and the later expanded editions.
Animated story sequences
The refreshed mobile announcement lists animated sequences previously included in the Nintendo DS version. Steam’s launch notice says the PC release includes animated cutscenes. If you want the game with these added cinematics rather than the strictly original presentation, the mobile or Steam editions documented here are the relevant choices.
What cannot be stated confidently
The available official sources do not provide a complete, authoritative comparison of the DS and Super NES scripts, menus, touch-oriented interface or every optional feature. Treat detailed community claims about those subjects as unverified unless they are backed by an official DS manual or contemporaneous publisher documentation.

What changed in the refreshed smartphone release
Higher-resolution graphics
Square Enix’s 2018 announcement describes higher-resolution graphics for the refreshed smartphone edition. That is a presentation upgrade, not a claim that the underlying art was entirely redrawn or that every asset has identical treatment across devices.

Sound remastered under Yasunori Mitsuda
The same announcement says the sound was remastered under the supervision of composer Yasunori Mitsuda. This identifies the production oversight; it does not establish a particular audio format, speaker quality or identical output on every phone and television.
Extra content and animated sequences
The mobile release combines the two DS-associated areas with the DS animated sequences. In other words, its expansion is not limited to sharper graphics: it also includes additional gameplay locations and added video scenes.
TV output and cloud saves
TV output and cloud saves are listed as smartphone-version features. Their practical usefulness depends on the operating system, device, account and current store build. Square Enix’s announcement also named the App Store, Google Play and Amazon Appstore as supported storefronts at that time; storefront availability should be checked for your region before buying.
The historical free-update offer
Square Enix said existing smartphone owners could update for free when the refreshed release was announced in 2018. That was a time-specific offer. It should not be interpreted as a promise that a newly purchased copy today, or every legacy installation, will receive the same treatment.

What the Steam PC release adds
Content inherited from later editions
At launch, Square Enix said Steam included the animated cutscenes, Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum. The PC version therefore carries forward the main DS-era additions documented in the publisher’s materials.

Updated PC presentation and controls
The launch notice lists updated controls, graphics and sound. Steam also supplies platform features that do not belong to the Super NES game itself: achievements, trading cards and Steam Cloud saving. These are conveniences for a PC library, not changes to the adventure’s story.
A limited launch promotion is not a current buying guide
The launch notice described a 2018 Limited Edition with digital bonuses. That was a historical promotion. It does not establish that the same bonuses, price or edition remain available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the 2018 Steam patches changed the launch build
April 10, 2018: graphics and text corrections
Square Enix’s first Steam patch notes state that Original graphics mode became the default selection. The notes also record font and text corrections and a reordered title-screen demo/opening sequence. This matters when comparing screenshots or videos made immediately after launch with the patched PC release: they may not show the same default presentation.
The publisher’s support summary for that first patch is available through the Square Enix Support Center.
May 17, 2018: interface and display adjustments
A later Steam update documented a controller-and-keyboard battle interface, a changed appearance for playable characters on the world map, improved animated-cutscene resolution and display area, and fixes for slowdowns in certain scenes. These changes show that “the Steam version” is not a perfectly static object: the build was revised after release.
Why patch history matters today
Historical patch notes explain why two PC players can report different-looking menus or cutscenes if they used different builds, settings or hardware. They also prevent an easy mistake: treating launch screenshots as a complete description of the current experience. The notes document what Square Enix changed in 2018, but they do not promise identical results on every present-day configuration.
Which version fits your goal?
Choose the original-style experience
Use the Super NES edition if your priority is the earliest presentation and a version without the later DS-associated areas and animated sequences. It is the appropriate historical baseline, but the official documentation here does not support a comprehensive claim about every script or interface distinction.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose the expanded content
Choose a refreshed mobile or Steam edition if you want the Dimensional Vortex, Lost Sanctum and animated cutscenes documented by Square Enix. Both modern releases preserve the original game while incorporating those additions.
Choose PC platform features
Steam is the documented choice when achievements, trading cards, Steam Cloud and PC-specific control options matter. Remember that its graphics, text and interface changed through the 2018 patches, so assess the patched build rather than relying only on launch-era material.
Choose mobile and television flexibility
The smartphone announcement specifically lists TV output and cloud saves. Those features make the mobile edition distinct from the Steam feature set described in the launch notice, although actual behavior depends on your device and current software version.
Buying and availability checks
Do not assume that a 2018 announcement still describes current storefront listings, prices, update rights or regional availability. Before purchasing, confirm the platform’s present product page, supported operating system and save behavior. If you are comparing a physical DS copy with a digital release, verify the condition, region and seller separately; the official documents establish the DS version’s importance in the series’ history but do not establish current stock or listing details.

Bottom line
For the most complete officially documented package, the refreshed mobile and Steam editions add the DS-era areas and animated sequences to the original adventure, while improving presentation. Steam further adds achievements, trading cards, cloud saving and PC controls, and its 2018 patches materially changed defaults, text, menus, map sprites and cutscene display. The Super NES edition remains the original baseline. Beyond those documented distinctions, especially exact SNES-versus-DS script and interface changes, the available publisher material is not detailed enough to support a definitive claim.
