Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe best first changes on a new Acer Chromebook are an operating-system update, a privacy and permissions review, quieter notifications, a check of Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and connected devices, and a deliberate power setting. Open the quick settings menu by selecting the time in the bottom-right corner, choose Settings, or press Alt+Shift+S. If a label is difficult to locate, use the Settings search field (also available with Ctrl+F). Work through the functional checks before changing wallpaper, shelf layout or other cosmetic options.
1. Open Settings and install updates before changing anything else
Select the time in the bottom-right corner and then select Settings. The keyboard shortcut Alt+Shift+S opens the same area. Inside Settings, use the search box when you cannot remember a menu name; pressing Ctrl+F also takes you to the search function.

Go to the About ChromeOS area and apply any update that is offered. Updating first matters because menu names, security behavior and available features can change with a ChromeOS release. An Acer Chromebook may not show exactly the same controls as another Acer model, and a school or employer can restrict updates or hide settings through administrator policy. If an update is unavailable, continue with the remaining checks and revisit About ChromeOS later rather than repeatedly forcing a manual change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Keep the Chromebook connected to reliable Wi‑Fi while it checks for an update.
- Save open work before a requested restart.
- After restarting, return to About ChromeOS once to confirm that no second update is waiting.
Google’s operating-system help also groups reset and recovery guidance with ChromeOS management. That is useful context if this is a replacement device or one that has just been restored, but a reset should not be your first response to a missing setting.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Review privacy, account data and permissions
Open Privacy and security and inspect the choices that control what is saved to your account and what apps and websites can use. Chromebook privacy controls are not one single “private mode” switch: account-data settings, app permissions and site permissions affect different kinds of information.
Account-data choices
Read each account-data option in plain language. If you use the same Google account on several devices, saving selected information can make the experience consistent; declining it can reduce synchronization but may mean that preferences do not follow you. Keep the protective default when you do not have a specific reason to change it. Make a change only when you understand what information leaves the device and what convenience you give up.
App permissions
Check which installed apps can access capabilities such as the microphone, camera, files or location. An app that never needs a microphone should not retain that access simply because it requested it during setup. Revoke permissions that do not match the app’s purpose, then test the app if you still need it. A permission prompt appearing again is a signal to decide deliberately, not an instruction to allow everything.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Site permissions
Review permissions for websites that you use regularly, particularly camera, microphone, notifications and pop-ups. Keeping a permission for a trusted service can prevent repeated prompts; removing one limits unexpected access. If a website stops working after a change, restore only the specific permission it requires rather than broadening every site’s access.
3. Stop notification overload without missing important alerts
Notifications are controlled for apps and websites, so treat them as an interruption budget. In Settings, open the notification controls and turn off sources that do not need to interrupt you. Acer’s guidance notes that notification controls can switch an app off or reduce the amount it sends.

Use a keep, reduce or block decision
- Keep: alerts tied to a time-sensitive task you genuinely monitor.
- Reduce: services whose updates are useful but not urgent.
- Block: promotional, repetitive or irrelevant alerts.
Make the decision per app or website rather than disabling notifications globally and later wondering why a needed reminder disappeared. After changing a control, trigger a normal event or wait for the next expected alert so you know the setting took effect. Notification permission is separate from camera or microphone permission, so review each category independently.
4. Confirm Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and every connected device
Open the network and device sections and configure only the connections you intend to use. Google lists Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, phones, keyboards, mice, displays and printers among the core Chromebook Settings categories.

Network check
Join your intended Wi‑Fi network and verify that the Chromebook reconnects after a restart. If you see several saved networks, remove old ones that you no longer trust or use. A forgotten network can create confusion when the Chromebook tries to connect automatically in a different place.
Bluetooth and accessories
Pair the keyboard, mouse, headphones or other accessories you recognize. Remove or disconnect devices that you do not recognize. If a device appears twice, delete the stale entry and pair the hardware again rather than leaving two ambiguous records.
Phones, displays and printers
Review connected phones, external displays and printers even if you are not using them today. A display or printer can remain listed after it has moved to another room; removing it keeps the device list understandable. When a school or workplace manages the Chromebook, an administrator may control some network or peripheral options, so a missing toggle is not necessarily a hardware fault.

Power and accessory compatibility
Acer manuals document the power-adapter context for each model. If you need a replacement, match the exact Chromebook model, connector and wattage shown on the device or in its manual. A USB‑C plug alone does not prove that a charger is suitable for every Acer Chromebook. The same check applies to docks and display adapters: confirm that the connector and power requirements match your model before buying.
5. Choose battery behavior based on your workload
When you need longer unplugged use, find Battery Saver in Chromebook support and enable the option that fits your work. Do not expect a fixed number of extra hours. Runtime changes with the Acer model, ChromeOS version, screen brightness, open apps, wireless use and the type of work you perform.
When to use Battery Saver
Use it before a long class, flight or commute when preserving charge is more important than maximum performance or convenience. For a desk session near an outlet, you may prefer normal behavior so that displays and demanding web apps work without power-saving compromises. Treat Battery Saver as a situational choice rather than a permanent quality setting.
Practical power checks
- Lower display brightness when the room allows it.
- Close tabs and apps you are no longer using, especially those that keep audio, video or live data running.
- Disconnect Bluetooth accessories that are idle for the day.
- Check the battery indicator after changing a setting and compare behavior during your normal workload, not an artificial test.
If battery life suddenly changes after an update, note the ChromeOS version, brightness and apps in use before assuming the battery or charger has failed. Those details are essential because Acer hardware and workloads vary.
6. Enable accessibility features you actually need
Open Settings > Advanced > Accessibility, then choose Manage accessibility features. ChromeOS includes dictation, focus mode, notification management, captions, Live Caption and mono audio, among other controls. Enable only the tools that solve a current need, and learn how to switch them off so they do not surprise another user of the Chromebook.

Speech and audio
Dictation can make text entry easier when typing is tiring or impractical. Live Caption and captions can improve access to spoken content; check whether captions should appear for all supported audio or only when you request them. Mono audio can help when you hear better in one ear or use a single earbud, although it changes the stereo presentation.
Focus and interruption control
Focus mode and notification-management tools are useful when you need fewer interruptions for study or concentrated work. They complement, rather than replace, the per-app notification decisions in the previous section. If a notification is still appearing, check both the app’s permission and the active focus setting.
Dictation and managed devices
On a school- or work-managed Chromebook, an administrator can limit accessibility features. If a control is unavailable, confirm whether the device is enrolled before troubleshooting hardware or reinstalling anything.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Personalize the Chromebook after the functional checks
Once updates, privacy, notifications, connections, power and accessibility are set, personalize the interface. Google groups personalization, accessibility and system preferences inside Settings, while Acer models can differ in the hardware options they expose.

Display, language and time
Set the display arrangement and scaling that make text comfortable on the built-in screen or an attached monitor. Confirm language, keyboard layout, time zone and clock behavior so documents, calendars and timestamps are correct. If you travel, verify the time zone after reconnecting to a new network rather than assuming it changed automatically.

Wallpaper, style and shelf
Choose wallpaper and style, then decide which apps belong on the shelf and in what order. Cosmetic choices are easiest to evaluate after the Chromebook has the right language, display scale and accessibility behavior; otherwise you may personalize around a layout you later need to undo.
8. A first-day decision guide
| Setting area | Change first when… | Main benefit | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChromeOS update | About ChromeOS offers an update | Current fixes, controls and compatibility | Menus vary by model, release and administrator policy; a restart may be required |
| Privacy and security | You have not reviewed account, app or site access | Fewer unintended data disclosures | Restricting a permission can break a feature until you restore that specific access |
| Notifications | Apps or websites interrupt work | Less noise without disabling every alert | Blocking an important source can hide a reminder or message |
| Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and devices | The device list contains old or unfamiliar entries | Predictable connections and a smaller attack surface | Removing a device means pairing or configuring it again later |
| Battery Saver | You need more unplugged time | Power-conscious behavior | Runtime is model- and workload-dependent; no universal extra-hour figure applies |
| Accessibility | You need speech, caption, focus or audio assistance | Built-in support without extra software | Some controls can be limited by an administrator and change how other users experience the device |
9. What to repeat after a Powerwash
A Powerwash removes local data and returns ChromeOS to its reset state. After signing in again, repeat the same order rather than restoring every preference at once:
- Open Settings with the time menu or Alt+Shift+S.
- Install any offered ChromeOS update from About ChromeOS.
- Recheck privacy, account-data, app and site permissions.
- Rebuild notification choices for the apps and websites you actually use.
- Join the intended Wi‑Fi network and pair only recognized Bluetooth devices and peripherals.
- Choose Battery Saver behavior for the current trip or workload.
- Re-enable accessibility features selectively.
- Restore language, time zone, display, wallpaper, style and shelf preferences last.
This order prevents a reset from reintroducing old permissions, unwanted alerts or forgotten device connections before you have inspected them.

The menu label is hard to find
Use the Settings search field or press Ctrl+F. Search for the function rather than guessing which category contains it.
A control is unavailable
Check the exact Acer model and ChromeOS release, then consider administrator policy. Managed school and work devices can hide or lock settings that are available on a personal Chromebook.
A peripheral will not connect
Remove an old pairing, restart the accessory, and pair it again. Confirm the connector and power requirements for docks, displays and chargers against the model manual.
Notifications continue
Check both the individual app or website permission and any active focus or notification-management feature. A browser site and an installed app can have separate notification controls.
Battery life is shorter than expected
Record brightness, connected devices, apps and workload, then test Battery Saver under the same conditions. Because Acer Chromebook hardware and ChromeOS versions differ, a comparison with another model is not a reliable diagnosis.
