ChromeOS Flex vs. Linux on an Older MacBook: Which Should You Install in 2026?

There is no safe one-size-fits-all answer. Install ChromeOS Flex when your exact MacBook model is currently certified by Google, its documented limitations are acceptable, and your work is mostly browser-based. Choose Linux when you want a more flexible desktop and are willing to boot a live USB and test the hardware yourself. If the model is unknown, identify it before downloading anything.

The choice is conditional because support is model-specific. A MacBook that appears similar can have different Wi-Fi, camera, graphics, sleep, or keyboard behavior. Both installation paths can also alter or erase the existing system, so make a verified backup before proceeding.

Start with the exact MacBook model

“Older MacBook” is not specific enough to predict compatibility. Before comparing operating systems, record the model identifier, processor, memory, internal storage, and whether the machine can boot from USB.

Find the identifier in macOS

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
  2. Open System Information (also called System Report on some releases).
  3. In Hardware Overview, note the Model Identifier, such as MacBookAir6,1 or MacBookPro11,2.
  4. Also record installed memory and storage capacity. These figures determine whether the installer requirements leave enough practical headroom.

Use the identifier, not only a retail name such as “MacBook Air 2013,” when checking ChromeOS Flex support. Different configurations sold under one year or family name may have different certification notes.

What ChromeOS Flex requires and guarantees

Google’s current ChromeOS Flex requirements specify an Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible computer, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 16 GB of internal storage, and the ability to boot from USB. Google says Intel or AMD processors and graphics from 2012 and earlier are not recommended or supported. Meeting the minimum does not make an individual MacBook certified.

ChromeOS Flex check What the published requirement means What you still need to verify
Processor and graphics Intel or AMD x86-64 compatibility is required; 2012-and-earlier Intel or AMD processors and graphics are not recommended or supported. The exact MacBook entry and its feature notes.
Memory At least 4 GB RAM. Whether the remaining memory is sufficient for your browser tabs and applications.
Internal storage At least 16 GB. Available capacity after accounting for the installation and your files.
Boot method The Mac must boot from USB. Whether Startup Manager recognizes the particular installer drive.
Installer media Google’s preparation guidance specifies an 8 GB or larger USB drive. The drive will be erased while the installer is created.

Certification is a model-level signal

Google publishes a certified-model list with a support status, an end-of-support year, and model-specific notes. Google says it guarantees ChromeOS Flex functionality only on certified models. Certification covers a baseline such as display, installation, networking, touchpad, keyboard, sleep and resume, USB, and a webcam when present. Other features may be tested without being guaranteed, or may not be tested or supported.

The list retrieved for this guide was last updated September 2, 2026. Treat that date as a snapshot, not a permanent promise: check the live entry immediately before installation because certification and end dates can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples from the current list

Mac model identifier Listed status Important note
MacBook Air 6,1 Certified through 2026 The webcam does not work.
MacBook Air 7,2 Certified through 2027 The webcam does not work.
MacBook Pro 9,2 Decertified; listed certification ended in 2025 Ongoing Google testing and support are no longer assured.
MacBook Pro 11,2 Decertified; listed certification ended in 2025 Ongoing Google testing and support are no longer assured.

An end-of-support year does not mean the computer stops booting on that date. It means Google ends the certification program’s ongoing testing and support for that model; future updates are not guaranteed. A currently certified model can still have a documented failure such as a non-working camera, so read every note rather than treating the certification label as “everything works.”

When Flex is the better fit

  • Your exact identifier appears as currently certified, with no unacceptable note.
  • You mainly use web applications, online documents, streaming, email, and other browser-centered services.
  • You prefer a managed, Chromebook-like interface over a highly configurable desktop.
  • You accept that macOS applications and Apple-specific workflows will not run as they did in macOS.

When Flex is a risky choice

  • The model is absent from the list or already decertified and you need dependable Wi-Fi, camera, sleep, or graphics.
  • Your work depends on a webcam, and the model entry says the camera does not work.
  • You need a macOS-only application, Apple development tools, or reliable Apple firmware servicing.
  • The Mac is at or below the stated processor, memory, or storage threshold.

What Linux offers on an older MacBook

Linux is a family of operating systems rather than one fixed product. Ubuntu is a documented example for older Intel Macs: its installation guidance explains how to create USB media, start the Mac while holding Option/Alt, and choose a live session before installing. Canonical says the installer USB works with older Apple hardware based on Intel CPUs. That establishes a useful boot and test path, not a guarantee that every component in every MacBook will work.

Ubuntu’s published practical requirements

Item Ubuntu Desktop guidance in the cited tutorial Why it matters on an older Mac
Internal storage At least 25 GB. This is higher than ChromeOS Flex’s 16 GB minimum and leaves little room on very small drives.
USB installer An 8 GB or larger USB drive is recommended. The USB is erased while the installer is created, so copy its contents elsewhere first.
CPU platform The guide discusses older Apple hardware with Intel CPUs. Confirm that your Mac is Intel-based and check the current Ubuntu release requirements.
Pre-install test Choose Try Ubuntu to run a live session without changing the internal disk. You can test the hardware before committing to an installation.

Why Linux can be the more flexible option

A mainstream Linux desktop gives you more choice of desktop environments, software sources, file-management tools, and hardware workarounds than a ChromeOS-style system. That flexibility is valuable when you need a conventional desktop application, local development tools, removable storage, or control over system settings. It also means more decisions: driver behavior, power management, updates, and troubleshooting vary by distribution, release, and Mac hardware.

Do not infer full compatibility simply because Ubuntu reaches the live desktop. The live session proves that the installer can boot and that some core devices work. It does not prove that suspend, Bluetooth, the camera, audio input, graphics acceleration, function keys, or battery reporting will remain reliable after installation.

ChromeOS Flex and Linux compared

Decision axis ChromeOS Flex Linux, using Ubuntu as the documented example
Model certainty Google publishes model-by-model certification, notes, and an end-of-support year. Non-certified devices have no Google guarantee of performance, functionality, or stability across updates. Ubuntu recommends certified hardware where available and encourages a live test for an unlisted device. Older Intel Apple hardware can boot the media, but component support remains model- and release-dependent.
Minimum storage 16 GB internal storage. 25 GB for Ubuntu Desktop in the cited tutorial.
Minimum memory 4 GB RAM. The cited tutorial does not establish a single universal RAM minimum for every release and desktop. Check the release requirements and test performance in the live session.
USB media 8 GB or larger drive; contents are erased during creation. 8 GB or larger drive recommended; contents are erased during creation.
Trial before install Use the USB path to run Flex temporarily before committing to the internal disk. Choose Try Ubuntu to preview the desktop without changing the computer.
Permanent-install risk The full installation erases the existing operating system, applications, settings, and data on the target. Installation changes partitions and boot configuration; back up first and do not assume a simple dual-boot setup on a particular Mac.
Best match Browser-first work and a Chromebook-style appliance experience. A general-purpose desktop, local software, and users willing to test and maintain the system.
Apple-specific software macOS applications and Apple-only workflows are not retained as macOS applications. macOS applications are not native to Linux either; check for Linux versions or compatible alternatives before erasing macOS.

Prepare safely before either installation

  1. Back up the Mac. Copy documents, photographs, browser data, password exports, and any license keys to a separate drive or service. Verify that several files can actually be opened from the backup.
  2. Record recovery information. Keep the Mac’s model identifier, serial number, current macOS version, Wi-Fi password, and any instructions needed to restore macOS. An external macOS installer or recovery method is useful if you later reverse the decision.
  3. Check the internal drive. Confirm available space, and make sure the drive is healthy enough to justify an operating-system change. Do not rely on the installer’s minimum capacity as a performance recommendation.
  4. Obtain an 8 GB or larger USB drive. Both the ChromeOS Flex and Ubuntu guidance uses this capacity threshold or recommendation. Creating either installer erases the USB, so move existing files first.
  5. Confirm the CPU and boot method. The documented Ubuntu path is for older Intel Apple hardware. ChromeOS Flex requires an x86-64-compatible Intel or AMD system and USB boot capability.
  6. Decide whether a camera is essential. The listed MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2 Flex entries explicitly say the webcam does not work. If video calls are important, test an external camera or choose a path that passes your live test.
  7. Plan for power. Connect the Mac to its charger during media creation, live testing, and installation. An interruption during disk changes can leave the machine unbootable.

How to evaluate ChromeOS Flex without committing

  1. Use the exact model identifier to open Google’s current certified-model list.
  2. Read the status, certification end year, and every feature note for that identifier. If the model is not currently certified, treat the result as an experiment rather than a supported deployment.
  3. Create the official ChromeOS Flex USB installer on the 8 GB-or-larger drive, accepting that the drive will be erased.
  4. Shut down the Mac, insert the USB, restart, and hold Option (also labeled Alt on some keyboards) to open Startup Manager.
  5. Select the USB installer and use the temporary or try-before-install option if offered. Do not select the permanent installation until your checks are complete.
  6. Test the functions you actually need: wireless networking, audio output and input, keyboard layout, trackpad gestures, display brightness, external monitors, USB devices, sleep and resume, Bluetooth, and the camera.
  7. If the live environment passes your checklist, return to the installer and read the erase warning carefully. A full Flex installation removes the existing operating system, applications, settings, and data from the target.
  8. Proceed only after confirming the backup and accepting the model’s support status and documented limitations.

How to evaluate Ubuntu Linux without committing

  1. Download the current Ubuntu Desktop image from the official Ubuntu source and create the installer on an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. Check the selected drive before writing because its contents will be erased.
  2. Insert the USB into the Intel Mac and restart while holding Option/Alt to open Startup Manager.
  3. Select the Ubuntu installer media and choose Try Ubuntu. Canonical describes this as a preview that does not make changes to the computer.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi and test the exact hardware that matters to you: web browsing, audio playback and recording, webcam video, keyboard, trackpad, brightness controls, external display, Bluetooth, USB devices, suspend/resume, and battery behavior.
  5. Open the applications you expect to use, or at least verify that Linux versions exist for them. A live session may run more slowly than an installed system, so judge compatibility separately from speed.
  6. Check storage before installing. The cited Ubuntu Desktop tutorial calls for at least 25 GB, and an old Mac with a smaller drive may need a different lightweight distribution or a hardware upgrade.
  7. When you are ready, start the installer and review the partitioning choice. Back up first; installation changes the disk layout and boot setup. Do not promise yourself a dual-boot arrangement unless you have verified the exact Mac model and a recovery plan.
  8. After installation, repeat the hardware tests and apply the updates offered by your chosen Ubuntu release. If a critical device fails, return to the live USB or restore your backup rather than deleting evidence of the problem.

What to test in the live session

Use a written checklist instead of deciding from the first successful boot. A system can display a desktop while a critical device remains unusable.

Common failure modes and what to do

The Mac does not show the USB

Shut down completely, reconnect the installer, and restart while holding Option/Alt. Recreate the USB if Startup Manager still does not show it, and verify that the Mac is Intel-based and supports USB booting. Try another USB port or drive before changing internal partitions. Do not erase the internal disk while the installer itself is unverified.

Wi-Fi works in one system but not the other

Record the result rather than assuming it is a temporary glitch. A live Linux session can reveal that a driver is missing; a Flex model note can reveal a known limitation. Use a wired connection or USB adapter only if it is compatible with the operating system and meets your needs, and do not claim complete support from a single successful connection.

The webcam is required but fails

For MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2, the current Flex list explicitly notes that the webcam does not work. If video calls are essential, test an external webcam in the live environment or choose an operating system that passes the camera test. A certification label does not override a model-specific note.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The machine feels slow

Check whether the Mac has only 4 GB of RAM, a nearly full drive, or an older processor and graphics chipset. The 4 GB Flex minimum is not a speed guarantee, and Ubuntu’s 25 GB storage guidance is not a performance guarantee. Reduce background applications, test with the intended workload, and consider a lighter Linux desktop if the live Ubuntu session is unresponsive.

The installer warns that data will be erased

Stop and verify the backup, target disk, and recovery plan. Flex’s permanent installer explicitly removes the existing operating system, applications, settings, and data. Ubuntu installation changes partitions and boot configuration. If you cannot identify the correct target or restore your files, do not continue.

The model is decertified or absent from Google’s list

Do not present Flex as a supported recommendation. You can still experiment with the USB if you accept that Google provides no guarantee of stability, functionality, or performance across updates, but Linux may offer a more practical route when its live test passes your hardware checklist.

Decision guide by user and model

If you own a currently certified MacBook Air

Flex is the lower-uncertainty choice when browser-based work is your priority and you can live with the listed camera limitation on Air 6,1 or 7,2. Run the USB session first, especially if you need video calls, external displays, or reliable sleep. Linux remains preferable if you need a conventional desktop or local development tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you own MacBook Pro 9,2 or 11,2

The listed certification for both models ended in 2025, so they are not current supported Flex recommendations in the 2026 snapshot. Test Ubuntu or another Linux distribution from USB and judge Wi-Fi, graphics, sleep, and input directly. Use Flex only as an unsupported experiment with a complete backup and realistic expectations about future updates.

If you do not know the identifier

Do not choose based on the screen size or purchase year. Find the identifier in About This Mac or System Information first. Without it, there is no defensible way to apply Google’s model-specific certification or interpret a feature note.

If you need macOS applications

Neither Flex nor Linux is a drop-in replacement for macOS software. Check each essential application, plug-in, printer, and file format before erasing macOS. Keeping a verified backup and a recovery path matters more than selecting an operating system quickly.

Final recommendation

Choose ChromeOS Flex for an exact MacBook model that is currently certified, passes your live hardware checks, and suits a browser-first workflow. Choose Linux when you need a general-purpose desktop, the Mac is unsupported or decertified for Flex, or you want more control and are prepared to test and maintain the system. In every case, identify the model, boot the USB, test the devices you rely on, and back up before making a permanent change.
