Flex shares ChromeOS technology and management tools, yet a MacBook running Flex lacks Google’s security chip and ChromeOS verified boot. Android app support is not the full Google Play catalog, Parallels Desktop Windows virtual machines are unsupported, and Linux development support depends on the exact Mac model.
Google’s certified-model list updated September 2, 2026 names MacBook Air 6,1 (certified through 2026) and MacBook Air 7,2 (through 2027). Google also notes that the webcam does not work on either model. Other MacBook variants may boot, but Google does not guarantee their performance, hardware support or stability. Check the exact model identifier and the live certification status before you erase macOS.

ChromeOS Flex and ChromeOS: the short answer
ChromeOS is the operating system supplied on purpose-built Chromebooks. Those computers include Google’s security chip and are designed around ChromeOS verified boot. ChromeOS Flex is an installable version intended for compatible PCs and Macs. Google describes the two systems as sharing “underlying technology and management tools,” but Flex must work with hardware that was not designed for a Chromebook.

The differences become important when you depend on hardware-backed boot security, Android applications, Windows virtual machines, Linux development tools or Mac-specific components such as the webcam and function keys.

| Area | ChromeOS on a Chromebook | ChromeOS Flex on a MacBook |
|---|---|---|
| Security hardware | Google security chip and ChromeOS verified boot | No Google security chip; verified boot is unavailable |
| Secure Boot | ChromeOS verified boot is built into the platform | UEFI Secure Boot may be available, but Google says it does not provide the same guarantees |
| Data encryption | User data is automatically encrypted with platform security support | User data is automatically encrypted; hardware protection for encryption keys depends on a supported TPM |
| Android apps | ChromeOS capability depends on the Chromebook and its software support | Google’s comparison specifies deployment of some Android VPN apps, not general Google Play catalog support |
| Windows virtual machines | Platform and edition dependent | Parallels Desktop Windows VMs are unsupported |
| Linux development environment | Supported on compatible Chromebook models | Model-dependent; verify the exact MacBook |
| Hardware guarantees | Designed and certified as a ChromeOS device | Only exact models on Google’s Flex certified list have Google’s baseline guarantee |
The practical consequence is simple: Flex can extend the useful life of a compatible MacBook for browser-focused work, but it does not turn that MacBook into a Chromebook with every Chromebook security and app feature.
Security and encryption differences
ChromeOS verified boot is missing on Flex
Chromebooks use a Google security chip as part of ChromeOS verified boot. At startup, verified boot checks that the operating system has not been altered and can recover from certain tampering scenarios. A MacBook running ChromeOS Flex does not contain Google’s security chip, so that verified-boot procedure is not available.
Some MacBooks can use UEFI Secure Boot. Google explicitly warns that Secure Boot on Flex does not provide the same security guarantees as ChromeOS verified boot. Treat it as an additional firmware control, not an equivalent replacement. If your organization requires the Chromebook security model, a certified Chromebook is the appropriate platform rather than a converted MacBook.

Encryption still protects user data, with a hardware caveat
ChromeOS Flex automatically encrypts user data. The protection of encryption keys at the hardware level depends on whether the MacBook has a supported Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Two MacBooks that look similar externally can therefore provide different security characteristics. Check the exact model and its TPM support instead of assuming that automatic encryption means identical hardware-backed protection.
For a household computer used mainly for web browsing, automatic encryption is a meaningful safeguard if the laptop is lost. For regulated, high-risk or centrally managed environments, document the absence of Google verified boot and confirm the TPM situation before deployment. Google’s comparison of Flex and ChromeOS is available at its official documentation.
Apps, Windows software and Linux development
Do not expect the full Google Play catalog
ChromeOS Flex is not a general Android tablet operating system. Google’s comparison says Flex supports deployment of some Android VPN apps. That statement is deliberately narrower than “Android apps are supported.” You should not plan on installing the full Google Play catalog, Android games or arbitrary mobile productivity apps on a MacBook running Flex.

ChromeOS Flex does not support Windows virtual machines using Parallels Desktop. A MacBook that previously ran Windows through Parallels on macOS will lose that route if you erase macOS and install Flex. This is a platform limitation, not a setting that can be enabled after installation.
Linux development support depends on the Mac model
Linux development environment support varies by model. Do not infer availability from the fact that a MacBook boots Flex or appears on a similar-looking product page. Verify the exact model identifier and test the development environment before committing the internal drive.
For a browser-only user, the Linux question may not matter. For developers, check it alongside memory, storage, sleep/resume and networking. A model that works well for web applications may still be unsuitable for a container-heavy or command-line development workload.
MacBook certification: identify the exact model first
Why the model identifier matters
Google certifies exact model identifiers, not broad families such as “MacBook Air” or “MacBook Pro.” A nearby year, screen size or processor option can have different firmware, cameras, Wi-Fi hardware or power-management behavior. Google warns that a similar model or variant may have unexpected issues even when one model in the family is certified.
The certified-model list is the strongest compatibility signal available for Flex, but certification does not mean every ChromeOS feature works. Google distinguishes guaranteed functions from features that were tested but may not work on every certified device. Read the listing for your identifier rather than relying on the product name printed on the lid.

The dates and statuses can change. Before installation, open Google’s live certified models list and confirm the identifier, certification end date and model notes. A model that is certified today can eventually become decertified or reach the end of its listed support period.
What certification guarantees—and what it does not
For an exact certified model, Google’s baseline guarantees cover these functions when the hardware is present:
- Audio input and audio output
- The internal display, when the device has one
- Video output
- Successful installation
- Network connectivity
- Touchpad and keyboard, when present
- Sleep and resume
- System user interface and graphics
- USB ports
- Webcam, when present
The webcam guarantee is subject to the model-specific notes: Google lists the webcam as non-working on both MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2 despite those models being certified. That is why the model notes matter more than a generic “certified” label.

These features are not guaranteed on every certified model:
- Bluetooth
- Keyboard shortcuts and function keys
- Touchscreens
- SD card slots
- Automatic screen rotation
Google may have tested one of these features without promising that it will work on every unit or configuration. If Bluetooth audio, media keys, an SD card reader or a touch interface is essential, plan a live USB test and have a fallback accessory or workflow.
Google explains the distinction in About ChromeOS Flex certified models. Certification is a compatibility baseline, not proof that Flex reproduces every Chromebook feature on a MacBook.

Minimum requirements for a MacBook
Google’s target-device requirements are:
- An Intel or AMD x86-64-compatible processor
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- At least 16 GB of internal storage
- The ability to boot from USB
These are minimums, not a promise of good performance. Devices with Intel or AMD processors or graphics from 2012 or earlier, and Nvidia hardware from 2014 or earlier, are not recommended or supported and are unlikely to work. Google guarantees functionality only on certified models; performance, functionality and stability on non-certified devices are not guaranteed.
ChromeOS Flex installation media requires an 8 GB or larger USB drive. Creating the installer erases everything on that drive, so copy any files elsewhere first. A 16 GB drive exceeds Google’s minimum and leaves practical headroom for the installer, but no particular brand is required.
Review Google’s Prepare for installation requirements before downloading anything. Confirm that the MacBook can start from external USB media and that you have a second computer if you need to recreate the installer.
How to test Flex without erasing macOS
A live USB session is the safest way to discover Mac-specific problems. It lets you check hardware and basic usability before deciding whether to install to internal storage.
- Identify the exact Mac model. Record the model identifier, not only the marketing name. Compare it with the current certified-model list and read every model note.
- Back up macOS and personal files. An internal installation can remove the existing operating system and data. Keep a backup that you can restore independently of the MacBook.
- Prepare an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. The creation process erases the drive. Use a blank drive or move its contents first.
- Create the ChromeOS Flex installer. Follow Google’s current preparation instructions and select the Flex installer for the USB drive.
- Boot the MacBook from USB. Use the Mac’s external-boot selection process. If the Mac refuses to start from the drive, stop and resolve that firmware or boot-selection issue before changing the internal disk.
- Choose the try-from-USB option. Keep the existing macOS installation untouched while you inspect Flex.
- Test the hardware you actually need. Check Wi-Fi, wired or adapter networking, speakers, microphone, display output, touchpad, keyboard, sleep and resume, USB ports, Bluetooth, function keys and any SD card workflow. On the two certified MacBook Air models, expect the webcam not to work.
- Test your work applications. Sign in, open required web services, verify printing or external displays, and check whether Linux development tools appear and function on that exact model.
- Shut down and decide. If a required device or application fails in the live session, do not assume an internal installation will fix it.
The USB session is slower than an installed system, so use it to find compatibility problems rather than to judge final disk performance. It cannot add Android or Parallels support that Flex does not provide.

Installing Flex to the internal drive
Install only after the live test, backup and model check are complete. The internal installation is the point at which you replace the existing operating system, so treat it as a destructive change unless you have a separate, supported dual-boot plan. Google’s Flex documentation provides the current installation flow and device-specific cautions.

- Confirm the final checklist. Recheck the exact model identifier, current certification status, support end date, webcam note and any unguaranteed feature you require.
- Verify the backup. Open or restore-test important files from the backup rather than assuming that a copy exists.
- Connect reliable power. Do not begin a disk replacement while the battery is nearly empty.
- Boot the prepared USB installer. If the installer cannot see the MacBook’s internal storage or reports a hardware error, stop and investigate instead of forcing the process.
- Select the internal-install option only when ready. Read the erase warning; the existing system and files may be removed.
- Complete first-run setup and updates. Sign in, connect to the network and allow the system to update before evaluating daily use.
- Repeat the hardware checks. Confirm sleep/resume, audio, network, display output and input devices after installation, because a live session and installed system can expose different power-management behavior.
A decision framework for your MacBook
| Your priority | What to verify | How Flex fits |
|---|---|---|
| Fast, supported web browsing on an older MacBook | Exact certified identifier, network, audio, display and sleep/resume | Good candidate when the model is certified and the live test passes |
| Video calls | Webcam function on the exact model; microphone and audio output | MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2 have a documented non-working webcam, so plan an external camera or choose another computer |
| Android productivity or games | Whether the required app is among the limited Android VPN deployments Google documents | Do not treat Flex as full Google Play support |
| Windows applications in Parallels | Whether the workflow depends on Parallels Desktop | Unsupported on Flex; retain macOS or use another supported platform |
| Linux development | Model-specific Linux environment support, storage and memory | Possible on some models; verify and test rather than assuming |
| High-assurance boot security | Need for Google security chip, verified boot and TPM-backed key protection | Flex lacks the Google security chip and verified boot; UEFI Secure Boot is not equivalent |
| External peripherals | Bluetooth, function keys, SD card, touchscreen and automatic rotation | These are not guaranteed across certified models; test each required feature |
Common failure points and practical responses
The MacBook boots, but a key device does not work
Start with the certification notes and the list of guaranteed functions. If the missing feature is Bluetooth, a function key, an SD slot, touchscreen input or automatic rotation, Google does not guarantee it on every certified model. Try the live USB session with current updates, then use a compatible external device only if that workaround suits your workflow.
The webcam is unavailable
On MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2, this is a documented model limitation rather than an installation mistake. Use an external webcam if your other requirements are satisfied, or keep macOS/choose another computer if the internal camera is essential.
The MacBook is not on the certified list
Flex may still boot on a non-certified MacBook, but Google does not guarantee performance, functionality or stability there. Treat the USB session as an experiment, not as evidence of long-term support. Do not deploy an unlisted model for a task that requires predictable updates, sleep behavior or peripheral support.
The computer meets the minimums but feels slow
Four gigabytes of RAM and 16 GB of storage are minimum target-device requirements, not performance targets. Browser tabs, video calls and Linux workloads can exceed those resources. Close unused tabs, test the live workload you actually run and compare the result with the cost of keeping macOS or replacing the device.
You need a feature that exists only on ChromeOS hardware
Flex cannot add Google’s security chip, verified boot or unsupported Android and Parallels capabilities through a setting or extension. If one of those is a hard requirement, choose hardware and an edition designed to provide it.
Bottom line for MacBook owners
Choose ChromeOS Flex when your MacBook is an exact certified model, your work is primarily web-based, and a USB test confirms the keyboard, trackpad, network, audio, display and sleep behavior you need. Go in knowing that the Google security chip and verified boot are absent, Android support is narrow, Parallels Windows VMs are unsupported, Linux support is model-dependent and some familiar Mac hardware may not work.
For the models currently listed by Google, MacBook Air 6,1 and 7,2 are certified through 2026 and 2027 respectively, but neither has a working webcam according to the listing. Certification is time-limited and volatile, so consult the live list immediately before installation. The strongest decision is not “Does this MacBook run Flex?” but “Does this exact model provide every security, application and hardware function I need after the documented differences?”
