ChromeOS Flex on a MacBook: Fix Wi‑Fi, Sound, Trackpad, Sleep and Boot Problems

Start with the exact Mac model identifier, not just “MacBook Air” or “MacBook Pro.” Google certifies ChromeOS Flex by model, and similar-looking variants can have different hardware and different results. A certified model is the only sensible starting point for troubleshooting: Google guarantees basic networking, at least one audio input and output method, the touchpad, and sleep/resume during its certification period.

The current Google table was updated September 2, 2026. It lists MacBook Air 6,1 as certified through 2026 and MacBook Air 7,2 through 2027; MacBook Air 5,1, MacBook Pro 9,2, and MacBook Pro 11,2 are decertified. Certification is not a promise that every wireless chipset or every feature works, and it ends when the listed support year ends.

Check the exact MacBook model before changing anything

“MacBook Air” is not a sufficient compatibility description. Apple reused names across several generations, while ChromeOS Flex certification applies to a precise model identifier. Two machines with similar cases can use different Wi‑Fi, audio, trackpad, graphics, or firmware components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the identifier in macOS before replacing the operating system, or read it from Apple’s model information if macOS no longer starts. Record the number exactly, including punctuation, and compare it with Google’s current ChromeOS Flex certified-model table. Treat that table as the authority because its entries and support dates can change.

A decertified computer may continue to boot and may appear usable, but Google no longer includes it in ongoing testing. New fixes are not guaranteed after the certification period. A non-certified Mac can work, yet Google does not guarantee stability, feature completeness, or performance across updates. Google also says most newer Mac models are not supported by ChromeOS Flex.

What certification actually guarantees

For a certified model, Google’s documented guarantee covers at least one method of audio input, at least one method of audio output, the internal display if present, video output, installation, network connectivity through Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or both when present, the touchpad if present, the keyboard, sleep and resume, the system interface and graphics, USB, and the webcam if present. The guarantee applies to the certified model as a whole; it does not mean every port, wireless card, camera mode, or hardware variant works.

For the two certified MacBook Air entries above, the table specifically says the webcam does not work. Do not treat that as a troubleshooting failure or expect a camera reset to change it.

Confirm the hardware and prepare safely

ChromeOS Flex installation is destructive. The installer USB is erased while the media is created, and installing Flex erases the computer’s existing data. Copy documents, browser data, photos, license files, and any recovery information to another drive or cloud storage before proceeding. If you need macOS later, create or verify a macOS recovery option before wiping the disk.

Requirement Google’s documented minimum or condition Why it matters
Processor architecture Intel or AMD x86-64 compatible device Flex is not intended for incompatible processor architectures
Memory At least 4 GB RAM Below this, installation and everyday use are outside the stated minimum
Internal storage At least 16 GB Needed for the installed operating system and updates
Installer drive USB drive of at least 8 GB Its entire contents are erased during media creation
Older hardware Some older processor and graphics combinations are not recommended or supported Meeting the memory and storage minimum does not override a hardware exclusion

Use an 8 GB-or-larger USB flash drive that contains nothing you need. Google does not endorse a particular brand. Some drives simply fail to boot as installers; if the Mac will not start from the created media, try a different manufacturer rather than assuming the Mac’s internal hardware is defective.

Install ChromeOS Flex without creating avoidable problems

  1. Verify the model first. Compare the exact identifier with the current certified list and read every model-specific note, including webcam limitations and the certification end year.
  2. Back up the Mac. Installation removes the existing operating-system installation and user data. Do not continue until the backup opens successfully on another device.
  3. Prepare the USB installer. Use a drive with at least 8 GB free capacity. The creation process erases the drive, so remove any files you intend to keep.
  4. Check power and peripherals. Keep the Mac connected to power. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices while installing; they can complicate boot selection or consume ports needed for the installer.
  5. Boot the installer and select the installation option. Follow the ChromeOS Flex installer’s prompts only after confirming that the internal disk can be erased.
  6. After the first restart, check the basics. Test Wi‑Fi, one audio input, one audio output, the touchpad, and sleep/resume before restoring all of your files and peripherals.

If the installer itself will not boot, test another USB drive first. A failed flash drive is a common explanation, and changing drives does not affect the Mac’s internal Wi‑Fi, sound, or trackpad hardware.

Fix Wi‑Fi that is missing, disabled, or unable to connect

Wi‑Fi problems are the most clearly documented Mac-relevant Flex symptom. Google notes that some Wi‑Fi chipsets are unsupported, so the checks below can distinguish a disabled radio or software state from a hardware compatibility limit; they cannot make an unsupported chipset work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Google’s documented sequence

  1. Check for a hardware Wi‑Fi control. If the Mac model has a physical switch or keyboard control for wireless networking, toggle it off and back on. Wait briefly after each change and check whether nearby networks appear.
  2. Test Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth in different combinations. Turn both radios off, then enable Wi‑Fi alone. If it works, enable Bluetooth and test again. Conversely, if Wi‑Fi is absent with Bluetooth enabled, turn Bluetooth off and rescan. This comparison can reveal radio-interaction problems without changing the installation.
  3. Toggle Wi‑Fi in quick settings. Open the ChromeOS quick-settings panel, switch Wi‑Fi off, wait a few seconds, and switch it on again. Select the intended network and enter its password carefully.
  4. Separate network failure from Mac failure. If other devices can see and join the same access point while Flex cannot see any network, suspect the Mac’s chipset or its Flex compatibility. If Flex sees networks but cannot join one, test a second network before blaming the Mac.
  5. Record the result. Note the exact Mac identifier, whether Wi‑Fi is missing or merely unable to authenticate, whether Bluetooth changes the symptom, and which networks were tested. If the sequence does not restore connectivity, provide those details when escalating to Google support.

Interpret the outcome

  • No Wi‑Fi control or networks at all: verify the model status and investigate chipset support. Repeating the quick-settings toggle will not overcome an unsupported radio.
  • Networks appear but one network fails: test another access point and re-enter the password. A single-network failure is not proof of a Flex driver defect.
  • Wi‑Fi works only when Bluetooth is off: keep that combination as a temporary workaround and record it for support; it indicates an interaction rather than a missing network.
  • Wi‑Fi worked in the installer but disappeared after installation: recheck the exact model and its notes, then repeat the hardware-control and quick-settings tests. Do not assume that reinstalling will add support for a chipset Google does not list.

On a certified model, Google’s network guarantee means that Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or both should provide connectivity when that hardware is present and supported. It does not promise that every wireless implementation in every similar Mac variant will be recognized.

Sound: establish whether input, output, or a particular device is failing

Google guarantees at least one audio input method and at least one audio output method on every certified model. The documentation does not provide a universal MacBook-specific sound-reset or driver-reinstallation procedure. Do not present a generic “reinstall the driver” recipe as an official Flex fix.

Run a focused audio check

  1. Identify the failed direction. Test output through the built-in speakers or a wired headset, then test input with the built-in microphone or another known-good input. A failure in one direction does not establish a failure in the other.
  2. Check the selected device. In ChromeOS audio controls, confirm that the intended output and input are selected and that neither volume nor microphone level is muted. Remove an unwanted Bluetooth device from the test so audio is not silently routed elsewhere.
  3. Retest after disconnecting accessories. Unplug docks, displays, USB audio hardware, and headsets. Test the built-in devices alone, then reconnect one accessory at a time.
  4. Compare with the model note. If the exact Mac is not certified, or if its certification has ended, treat the symptom as an unsupported-device possibility rather than assuming a settings error.

If one built-in input and one built-in output work but a specific accessory does not, the certified-model audio guarantee has been met and the accessory or connection is the next place to investigate. If neither built-in direction works on a certified MacBook, document the model, the selected devices, and the test results for support; the cited Google material does not establish a Mac-specific reset sequence.

Trackpad problems: distinguish a missing touchpad from a settings symptom

The touchpad, when present, is one of the functions Google guarantees on a certified model. There is no documented MacBook-specific trackpad reset procedure in the cited Flex guidance, so avoid promising that a particular key combination or driver package will repair it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the basics without masking the evidence

  • Disconnect external mice and pointing devices, then test the built-in touchpad on its own.
  • Check ChromeOS input settings to ensure the touchpad has not been disabled or made unusably slow.
  • Restart once and test before adding extensions, accessibility utilities, or USB hubs.
  • Test movement, clicking, and two-finger scrolling separately. A pointer that moves but will not click is a different symptom from a completely absent device.

If the touchpad remains absent on a certified model, record whether it failed immediately after installation or stopped later, along with any connected peripherals. If the Mac is non-certified or decertified, Google’s guarantee does not apply, and replacement hardware or a different operating system may be more practical than repeated software resets.

Sleep and wake: a guarantee with a hardware caveat

Sleep and resume are guaranteed functions on certified models, but Google’s known-issues documentation also says that sleep/resume malfunction can be a hardware issue. Certification therefore gives you a meaningful baseline, not a promise that every individual machine will wake reliably.

Test the complete cycle

  1. Save work and invoke sleep using the normal ChromeOS power controls.
  2. Wait long enough for the display and activity indicators to settle.
  3. Wake the Mac with the keyboard or touchpad and note whether the display returns, whether input responds, and whether Wi‑Fi reconnects.
  4. Repeat once with unnecessary USB and Bluetooth devices disconnected. If the result changes, record which device was attached.

Classify the failure precisely: refusal to enter sleep, black display after sleep, frozen input after wake, or wake with no network. Check the exact model’s certification status and notes before treating it as a software defect. On a certified model with repeatable failure and no documented model-specific remedy, preserve the symptom record and escalate; on an unsupported or decertified Mac, a hardware limitation is a realistic explanation.

Black screen or unusually long startup after installation

A Mac can install ChromeOS Flex successfully and still boot to a black screen or pause for a long time because the startup choice points to the wrong disk entry. This is a boot-selection problem, not a Wi‑Fi, sound, touchpad, or sleep repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Flex boot entry

  1. Open the Mac’s startup-options screen during power-on.
  2. Select EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex, whichever entry is shown for the installation.
  3. Set that entry as the default startup choice when the startup interface offers the option.
  4. Restart and check whether the system now reaches the ChromeOS Flex sign-in screen.

If the Mac still starts to a black screen, Google describes clearing PRAM/NVRAM because it can retain the previous startup disk. Follow the model-specific Apple startup procedure only after checking the warning below.

Important PRAM/NVRAM warning

Google explicitly warns against resetting NVRAM on iMac 5,2 and MacBook 2,1, MacBook 3,1, and MacBook 4,1. Those very old models can lose functionality after a reset. Do not generalize the workaround to every Apple computer, and do not use it as a remedy for Wi‑Fi, sound, touchpad, or sleep failures.

If startup remains slow after the correct EFI or Flex entry is selected, remove external USB devices and test again. A different installer drive may also be necessary if the installation media was unreliable. Keep the original backup intact until the Mac has completed several normal boots.

A practical decision path for recurring failures

  1. Model first: verify the exact identifier against the current certified list and note whether certification is active, ending this year, or already ended.
  2. Feature second: compare the failing function with Google’s certified guarantees: network, one audio input, one audio output, touchpad, and sleep/resume.
  3. Documented check third: use the Wi‑Fi toggle sequence for wireless problems and the EFI/ChromeOS Flex startup selection for black-screen boot problems.
  4. Isolation fourth: remove accessories, test another network or audio device, and separate input from output or sleep from wake.
  5. Escalate or change plans: provide the model identifier and exact symptom to Google support when the documented checks fail. If the device is non-certified or decertified, weigh the time spent troubleshooting against returning to macOS or choosing hardware on the current certified list.

What not to assume

  • A MacBook label alone does not identify a certified device.
  • Certification does not cover every hardware variant, every Wi‑Fi chipset, or every accessory.
  • Meeting 4 GB RAM, 16 GB storage, and an 8 GB USB minimum does not make an excluded processor or graphics combination supported.
  • A webcam failure on MacBook Air 6,1 or 7,2 is a documented limitation, not evidence that the installation is broken.
  • A black screen after installation is not evidence that the Wi‑Fi or audio hardware is unsupported; fix startup selection first.
  • Decertification means ongoing testing and support eligibility have ended, not that the computer will immediately stop booting.

When ChromeOS Flex is a sensible choice for this Mac

Proceed when the exact MacBook is on the active certified list, its documented limitations are acceptable, the machine meets the hardware requirements, and your backup is complete. Treat Wi‑Fi, audio, touchpad, and sleep as acceptance tests immediately after installation rather than discovering a limitation after migrating all your files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pause when the model is absent from the list, the certification period has ended, the Mac uses an unsupported chipset, or a required feature such as the webcam is listed as nonfunctional. In those cases Flex may still run, but the result is outside Google’s continuing compatibility guarantee and can change with updates.
