What Chromebook Phone Hub is (and what it does)
Phone Hub is a feature in Chrome OS that pairs your Chromebook with an Android phone. Once paired, your Chromebook can display phone notifications and support call-related interactions.
Depending on your Chromebook model and Android version, Phone Hub may include:
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
- Notification mirroring (including banner-style alerts on the Chromebook)
- Call handling (answer/decline controls when your phone rings)
- Quick access to phone messages and recent activity via the Phone Hub interface
Prerequisites before you start
Before you touch any settings, confirm you have the basics covered. Phone Hub depends on a stable Google account match and recent Chrome OS components.
1) Use the same Google account on both devices
Your Chromebook and Android phone must be signed into the same Google account. If you switch accounts mid-setup, pairing can fail or silently partially connect.
2) Update your Chromebook and Android
Google frequently improves Phone Hub over time, so keep things current.
- On Chromebook: open Settings > About ChromeOS and check Updates.
- On Android: open Settings > System > System update (wording varies) and install any available updates.
3) Ensure Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi are enabled
Phone Hub generally works best with Bluetooth turned on and an active internet connection on both devices.
Supported Android phones and Android settings to check
Phone Hub works with many Android phones, but availability can vary by region, device model, and OS version. If your phone is compatible, the pairing steps below will appear in the expected places.
Android settings commonly required
- Bluetooth: enabled on the phone
- Notifications: allowed for the companion app used by Phone Hub
- Battery optimization: avoid aggressive restrictions for the relevant Google components
- Location: typically not required for Phone Hub itself, but some pairing flows use Nearby/Bluetooth discovery that can be affected by system toggles
Set up Phone Hub on your Chromebook
Start the pairing from Chrome OS, then confirm the connection on your Android phone. The Chromebook will guide you, but having the right toggles ready prevents most delays.
Step 1: Open Phone Hub settings on the Chromebook
- Click the clock (bottom-right) to open the Quick Settings panel.
- Open Settings.
- In the left sidebar, select Connected devices.
- Find and select Phone Hub (or a similar entry such as Phone Hub & notifications).
Step 2: Turn on Phone Hub
Toggle Phone Hub to On. Your Chromebook should prompt you to add a phone or sign in again.

Step 3: Begin the pairing flow
- Select Set up or Get started.
- Confirm that the Google account shown matches your Android phone account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions until you see a pairing code/confirmation method.
Connect your Android phone for Phone Hub
Now complete pairing on the Android device. The exact UI varies slightly by manufacturer, but the intent is the same: approve permissions and confirm the pairing with your Chromebook.
Step 1: Install or enable the needed Phone Hub companion app
Depending on your setup, you may be prompted to install/enable an app component (commonly Google’s phone companion services). If you already have it, verify it’s enabled.
On the Chromebook pairing screen, follow any prompts to:
- Install the required component
- Enable required permissions
- Confirm notification access
Step 2: Confirm pairing on the phone
- On Android, open the notification or pairing prompt related to Chromebook/Phone Hub.
- Accept the connection and sign in to the same Google account if asked.
- Allow any permission requests (especially notifications).
Step 3: Wait for the connection to complete
After confirmation, Chromebook typically takes 30 seconds to a couple of minutes to start showing notifications. If nothing appears, move to troubleshooting.

- Open Settings on Android.
- Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Select the Phone Hub companion app/component (the name may vary).
- Tap Notifications.

- Select the Phone Hub companion component.
- Set it to Unrestricted or Not optimized (wording varies).

Handle calls from your Chromebook
When your phone rings, your Chromebook may show call controls. Use the on-screen options to answer or decline, if your model and software support it.
Keep devices close for best performance
Phone Hub works best when both devices are on the same network and Bluetooth is enabled. If you roam far away or put one device in a deep power state, updates may slow down.
Troubleshooting when Phone Hub won’t connect
If Phone Hub pairing fails or notifications never show up, use the checks below in order. Most issues are account mismatch, permissions, or an interrupted service component.
1) Confirm accounts match on both devices
On Chromebook, open Settings > You and Google to verify the active account. On Android, check under Accounts or Google.
2) Restart both devices
Not glamorous, but it resolves a surprising number of pairing state issues.

Common issues and fixes
Here are the problems people hit most often and the fastest fixes.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Phone Hub shows connected, but no notifications arrive | Notification permission off or app restricted | Android Settings > Apps > companion app > Notifications > enable. Then set battery optimization to Unrestricted |
| Pairing fails immediately | Account mismatch or stale pairing state | Confirm the same Google account. Remove the phone in Chrome OS and re-add |
| Call controls don’t appear | Device/region/software limitation | Check Chrome OS updates; verify Bluetooth is on; re-run setup after updates |
| Notifications arrive late (5–30 minutes) | Battery optimization or background limits | Disable battery optimization for the Phone Hub companion app. Also disable any “restricted background” mode if present |
| Connection drops after sleep | Power saving or network changes | Keep Bluetooth on; ensure both devices are online; retest after waking the Chromebook |
Alternatives if Phone Hub isn’t available
If you don’t see Phone Hub on your Chromebook or the feature never completes pairing, you still have practical options depending on what you need most.
Use Google Messages on the web
For message-heavy workflows, web messaging can be a substitute for notification mirroring. Your mileage depends on your carrier and phone support.
Use your phone notifications directly
Some users choose to keep all interactions on the phone and use Chromebook for tasks that don’t require phone awareness.

FAQs
Why does Phone Hub require the same Google account?
Phone Hub relies on Google account identity to connect the two devices securely. If the accounts don’t match, Chrome OS can’t trust the paired phone session.
Do I need Bluetooth turned on all the time?
Bluetooth must be enabled for reliable discovery and pairing behavior. If you turn it off, notifications and call controls may become intermittent.
My Chromebook doesn’t show Phone Hub in Connected devices. What now?
Your Chromebook might not be eligible for Phone Hub, or it may require an OS update. Check About ChromeOS for updates and re-check Connected devices after updating.
Notifications appear on my phone but not on my Chromebook. How do I fix that?
Start with Android notification permissions for the Phone Hub companion app. Then disable battery optimization for that app to prevent background delays.
Can I use Phone Hub with multiple Android phones?
Many setups allow multiple devices, but you may need to connect/disconnect from the Chromebook’s Phone Hub settings. If notifications get mixed, remove extra phones and pair again one at a time.
Does Phone Hub work when my Chromebook is offline?
If Chrome OS is offline, it can’t receive new notification events. Once the Chromebook reconnects, Phone Hub may resume synchronization, but it won’t retroactively deliver events that were never captured.

Setting up Chromebook’s Phone Hub with an Android phone is mostly a permissions-and-account match problem: update both devices, sign in with the same Google account, enable the Phone Hub component, and confirm Android notification access.
If it still won’t connect or notifications lag, remove and re-add the phone on Chrome OS, then revisit battery optimization and app notification settings on Android.
