A Chromebook that will not connect to Wi‑Fi can have a device problem, a router or internet problem, or a guest-network sign-in requirement. Start with reversible checks, run ChromeOS Diagnostics, and test after every change. Then compare the Chromebook with another network and another device before changing advanced settings or considering recovery.

First, identify what “won’t connect” means

The fix depends on where the connection fails. Look at the network control in the lower-right corner of ChromeOS and classify the symptom before changing anything.

What you see What it usually indicates Best first check
The intended network is not listed Wi‑Fi may be disabled, the access point may be out of range or offline, or the network may not be advertising itself. Confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled and check whether another device can see the network.
The Chromebook sees the network but rejects the password The saved credentials may be wrong, or the network may be refusing the device. Confirm that you are selecting the intended network and entering its current password.
The Chromebook says it is connected, but pages do not load The Chromebook has joined the local Wi‑Fi, but the router, internet service, DNS path, or a sign-in portal may not be providing internet access. Check the router or internet connection and look for a captive-portal sign-in.
It connects briefly and then drops The link may be unstable, the access point may be overloaded, or a device-side connectivity fault may be present. Run Diagnostics, restart, and compare behavior on another Wi‑Fi network.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating “connected to Wi‑Fi” and “online” as the same state. A successful association with an access point does not guarantee that the network has internet access.

Use this safe troubleshooting order

Work through the sequence below. Make one change, test the connection, and only then continue. Google’s Chromebook Help guidance explicitly says to test the Chromebook after each step so you can identify which change resolved the problem.

  • AC600 Nano size wireless Dual band USB Wi-Fi adapter for fast and high speed Wi-Fi connection.
  • Strong 2.4G/5G connection allows the user to use the Internet with lag-free experience.
  • Sleek and miniature sized design allows the user to plug and leave the device in it's place.
  • Industry leading support: 2-year and free 24/7 technical support
  • This network transceiver supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14
  1. Confirm Wi‑Fi is on. Open the network control and make sure Wi‑Fi is enabled rather than turned off. Check that the Chromebook is attempting to join the intended network, not a similarly named neighboring or guest network.
  2. Check the network itself. If the Chromebook reports a connection but websites fail, inspect the router’s status and determine whether other devices have internet access. A router or service outage cannot be repaired from the Chromebook.
  3. Run ChromeOS Diagnostics. Use the built-in connectivity tests before making less reversible changes.
  4. Restart the Chromebook. After it starts again, try the same network and test a page or other online service.
  5. Compare networks and devices. Try the Chromebook on another trusted Wi‑Fi network and try another device on the original network.
  6. Handle guest-network sign-in. On public Wi‑Fi, complete the web portal sign-in even if the Wi‑Fi indicator says connected.
  7. Try a wired test if available. A compatible USB Ethernet adapter and cable can show whether the Chromebook can reach the router over Ethernet.
  8. Escalate with evidence. Save the Diagnostics results and contact the manufacturer, network administrator, or internet provider as appropriate.

Check Wi‑Fi status and the intended network

Make sure the radio is enabled

Open the ChromeOS network controls and verify that Wi‑Fi is switched on. If it is off, turn it on and wait for nearby networks to appear. Select the network you actually intend to use; names that differ by only a character can belong to separate access points or guest networks.

Separate local connection from internet access

If the Chromebook shows a connected state but a browser page does not load, the Wi‑Fi association may be working. Check whether the router has an internet connection and whether other devices on that same network can browse. If every device fails, focus on the router or service rather than repeatedly changing Chromebook settings.

If only the Chromebook fails, continue with Diagnostics and the cross-network test below. Record the exact message shown by ChromeOS, because “network unavailable,” “incorrect password,” and “connected without internet” point to different owners of the problem.

Run ChromeOS Network Diagnostics

Open the tool

  1. Open the Launcher.
  2. Search for Diagnostics.
  3. Open the Diagnostics app and select the connectivity tests.
  4. Run the Wi‑Fi test and any other relevant connectivity checks.
  5. Save the test details so they can be shared with support if the issue continues.

Google documents Diagnostics as available on ChromeOS version 90 and later. The tool checks connectivity for Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, cellular connections, and Google services. The exact labels can change as ChromeOS is updated, but the purpose is the same: provide test results instead of relying only on the network icon.

Read the result in context

A passing Wi‑Fi check does not prove that a public network has completed its sign-in process, and a failing Google-services check does not by itself identify whether the router or the Chromebook is at fault. Use the report with the isolation tests: compare the same Chromebook on another network and compare another device on the original network.

Save the report before contacting support. Include the ChromeOS version, the network name, the time of the failure, and whether other devices can connect. Those details help a manufacturer or administrator reproduce the condition.

Restart and retest

Restart the Chromebook from the ChromeOS power menu, wait for the sign-in screen, and reconnect to the intended Wi‑Fi network. Test the same page or service that failed before the restart. Do not change several settings at once; otherwise you will not know whether the restart, a network change, or another action made the difference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A restart is a low-risk step. It does not erase local files, reinstall ChromeOS, or alter the router. If the problem returns immediately, move to comparison testing rather than repeating restarts indefinitely.

Isolate the Chromebook from the network

The most useful practical question is whether the failure follows the Chromebook or stays with the original network. A Chromebook Community guide by Product Expert Alumni Jim Dantin presents this comparison as community troubleshooting advice; it is not part of Google’s surfaced official connection checklist.

Test the Chromebook elsewhere

Use another trusted Wi‑Fi network, such as a phone hotspot or a different home or work network, if one is available. If the Chromebook joins the second network and can browse, the original router, access point, password, or network policy becomes the stronger suspect.

Test another device on the original network

Try a phone or another computer on the same Wi‑Fi. If that device also cannot connect or cannot reach the internet, investigate the router, service outage, or network administrator. If other devices work normally while the Chromebook fails, keep the focus on the Chromebook, its ChromeOS diagnostics, or a policy applied specifically to that device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Chromebook on another network Other device on original network Likely direction
Works Fails Original router, access point, internet service, or network policy.
Fails Works Chromebook, its software, hardware, or a device-specific policy.
Works Works Intermittent conditions, credentials, range, or a network rule affecting only this connection attempt.
Fails Fails Two problems are possible; verify that the second test network and device are known to work.

This is an isolation method, not proof of a particular failed component. A Chromebook that works on a hotspot can still have a compatibility or authentication issue with the original network, while a router that works for one device can still reject another because of its policy.

Complete captive-portal sign-in on public Wi‑Fi

Cafés, hotels, airports, libraries, and other guest networks often allow the Chromebook to associate with Wi‑Fi before granting internet access. The device can therefore display a Wi‑Fi connection while every normal website appears unavailable.

  1. Join the venue’s intended Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Open the browser and navigate to a page whose address begins with http://, rather than waiting for a secure page to redirect.
  3. When the venue’s sign-in or terms page appears, complete the required steps.
  4. Open a new page to confirm that internet access works.

Google recommends using an http:// page to prompt the portal. If no portal appears, ask the venue’s staff whether the network requires a specific sign-in or device registration. Do not assume that buying or replacing Chromebook hardware will fix a login requirement.

Try an optional wired Ethernet test

If you already have a compatible USB Ethernet adapter and an Ethernet cable, connect the Chromebook directly to the router and test internet access. Google lists this as a wired troubleshooting step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The adapter must be compatible with the Chromebook’s USB port and ChromeOS.
  • The cable must connect to a working router or network jack.
  • Allow ChromeOS a moment to detect the wired connection before running the test.
  • Use Diagnostics or open a known working page to check the result.

A successful Ethernet connection shows that the Chromebook can communicate over a wired path, but it does not by itself prove that the Wi‑Fi radio has failed. The wireless network could be rejecting the device, requiring a portal, or experiencing an access-point problem. Conversely, a failed Ethernet test can reflect an adapter, cable, router port, or wired configuration issue. Treat this as a way to narrow the fault, not as a Wi‑Fi repair or a reason to purchase a particular adapter.

Check router and administrator factors

When every device is affected

If phones, tablets, and computers all fail on the same network, check the router’s connection status and any service outage information available from the internet provider. On a school, work, hotel, or library network, contact the administrator rather than changing settings you do not control.

When only the Chromebook is affected

Keep the saved Diagnostics report and note the exact network name and error message. The manufacturer can advise on a specific Chromebook model, while a school or work administrator can check enrollment rules, certificates, access controls, or other device-management policies. Avoid making changes that violate an organization’s policy or remove management from the device.

When the issue is intermittent

Record when the connection drops, whether the Chromebook is stationary or moving, and whether other devices lose access at the same time. Run Diagnostics while the problem is occurring if possible, then save the report. A time-stamped pattern is more useful to support than a general statement that Wi‑Fi “sometimes” fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use ChromeOS Recovery as an early Wi‑Fi fix

Recovery is not a routine network reset. Google’s recovery guidance states that recovery removes and reinstalls the operating system and warns that it permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files.

Use recovery only when an appropriate support path specifically directs you to do so and after backing up anything you need. For an ordinary Wi‑Fi connection problem, start with the connection state, Diagnostics, restart, network isolation, portal sign-in, and optional Ethernet test. Those steps preserve local files and provide evidence about whether the fault is the device or the network.

Information to collect before asking for help

  • The Chromebook model and ChromeOS version.
  • The exact Wi‑Fi network name and whether it is private, managed, or public.
  • The precise ChromeOS message or icon state.
  • Whether Wi‑Fi is visible and whether the password is accepted.
  • Whether the Chromebook works on another trusted network.
  • Whether another device works on the original network.
  • The date and time of failures, especially for intermittent drops.
  • The saved ChromeOS Diagnostics report.
  • Whether an Ethernet test was attempted and what happened.

For a managed Chromebook, send this information to the school or workplace administrator first. For a personally owned device, the manufacturer can use it to decide whether the next step is software support, hardware service, or network-specific guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Chromebook show Wi‑Fi but still say there is no internet?

The Chromebook may be associated with the access point while the router has lost internet service or a captive portal is waiting for sign-in. Check another device on the same network and open an http:// page if the network is public.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Diagnostics work on every Chromebook?

Google documents the Diagnostics app for ChromeOS version 90 and later. On an older version, update or follow the manufacturer’s support path for that device.

Will a USB Ethernet adapter repair Wi‑Fi?

No. It provides a separate wired path that can help isolate the problem. Compatibility, the cable, the router port, and the network itself all affect the result.

Should I recover my Chromebook because Wi‑Fi stopped working?

Not as an early step. Recovery reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local files. Use the reversible checks and collect Diagnostics evidence first; proceed with recovery only when qualified support directs you and your files are backed up.

Who should help with a school or work Chromebook?

Contact the organization’s administrator. Managed-device policies or network authentication rules may require changes that only the administrator can make.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Chromebook be connected to Wi‑Fi without having internet access?

Yes. Wi‑Fi association only confirms a local link to the access point. The router may be offline, or a public network may still require a captive-portal sign-in.

What is the quickest way to tell whether the router or Chromebook is at fault?

Test the Chromebook on another trusted Wi‑Fi network and test another device on the original network. The combination of those results points the next support contact toward the device or the network.
