If your Chromebook displays “ChromeOS is missing or damaged”, a model-specific recovery USB can reinstall the operating system. You need the affected Chromebook, another Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer running Chrome, and an erasable USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating and using the recovery media permanently erases local files on the affected Chromebook, so copy anything you can still access before you begin.

The process has two stages: create the USB with Chromebook Recovery Utility, then start the affected device in recovery mode and choose Recover using external disk. The exact key combination depends on whether you have a Chromebook, tablet, Chromebox or Chromebit.

When Chromebook recovery is the right fix

Recovery is a last-resort software repair for serious ChromeOS failures. Use it when the Chromebook shows “ChromeOS is missing or damaged”, when ordinary troubleshooting has failed, or when a Google or manufacturer support expert tells you to recover the device.

If you can still sign in, Google recommends trying a restart and then a factory reset before creating recovery media. Those steps may resolve a problem without requiring a separate USB. Recovery is appropriate when those less-invasive options do not work or are unavailable.

8GB Flash Drive 10 Pack Bulk USB Flash Drives, USB2.0 Thumb Drive USB Stick for Data Storage Backup, Jump Drive Pen Drive Zip Drive Memory Stick with Indicator, USB Storage Flash Drive Swivel Design
  • 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
  • Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
  • Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
  • Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
  • FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.

Recovery is not a normal update and it is not a way to preserve the files stored on the computer. Google Chromebook Help warns: “Recovery permanently erases everything on your Chromebook’s hard drive, even your downloaded files.” Treat the operation as a complete local-data wipe.

What you need before creating the USB

Gather the equipment and information below before opening the utility. The USB drive will be erased during creation, so do not use one containing files you want to keep.

Requirement What to have ready
Affected device The Chromebook that needs ChromeOS reinstalled. Device type matters because recovery-mode instructions differ for Chromebooks, tablets, Chromeboxes and Chromebits.
Working computer Another Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome installed. On Windows or Mac, install Chrome first if it is not already present.
USB flash drive At least 8 GB of capacity. The drive must be erasable because Chromebook Recovery Utility reformats it while creating recovery media.
Correct model information The affected Chromebook’s model, selected from the utility’s list. If the recovery screen shows a model number near the bottom of the error message, you can type that number into the utility.
Power and time Keep the affected Chromebook connected to power where possible and allow the utility to finish writing the image before removing the USB.

Back up anything you can still reach

Copy local documents, photos, downloads and other files from the Chromebook before recovery. If the computer will not start far enough to access them, recovery may make those local files unrecoverable. Do not assume that a file is safe merely because it was visible in the Files app; the recovery warning applies to the Chromebook’s local storage.

Use a disposable USB for this job

The recovery utility erases the selected drive. A drive that is technically larger than 8 GB can be used, but the documented requirement is at least 8 GB; no particular brand, connector, transfer speed or model is required. Label the drive or set it aside until you have finished, because it will contain recovery media rather than ordinary files.

Create a Chromebook recovery USB

Google’s Chromebook Recovery Utility creates media for a particular Chromebook model. Use the utility on a working Chromebook or on a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome.

  1. Open Chromebook Recovery Utility. On a working Chromebook, launch the utility. On Windows or Mac, open Chrome and install or open Chromebook Recovery Utility.
  2. Select “Get started.” This begins the recovery-media wizard.
  3. Identify the affected Chromebook. Select the model from the list. If you do not see an obvious match, type the model number shown near the bottom of the affected device’s recovery error message. Selecting the model-specific entry is important: the USB must match the Chromebook you are repairing.
  4. Insert the USB flash drive. Confirm that it holds at least 8 GB and that any files on it can be deleted.
  5. Choose the drive in the utility. Check the drive name and capacity carefully so you do not erase a different removable disk.
  6. Select “Continue,” then “Create now.” The utility downloads and writes the recovery image. Leave the drive connected while this is in progress.
  7. Wait for the completion message. Remove the USB only after the utility reports that the recovery media is ready.

Creating recovery media erases the USB. Google also provides an Erase recovery media option in the utility’s Settings menu if you later want to remove the recovery image and reuse the drive for other files.

Linux command-line method

Google documents a separate Linux route for users who prefer command-line tools. Download the Recovery Tool, make the script executable, run it with root privileges, and follow its on-screen instructions. The Linux workflow still writes model-specific recovery media to an erasable USB; it does not change the requirement to select the affected Chromebook’s model.

Do not select ChromeOS Flex as a substitute

ChromeOS Flex has its own USB installer process. Flex installation is not the ordinary recovery flow for a Chromebook that has lost or damaged ChromeOS. For recovery, select the affected Chromebook’s model in Chromebook Recovery Utility. Choosing Flex instead can put you on an installation path that does not provide the model-specific recovery image your device needs.

Put the Chromebook into recovery mode

Disconnect peripherals from the affected Chromebook before starting. Remove docks, external storage, printers and other accessories so the recovery process sees only the intended recovery drive.

Most Chromebook laptops

  1. Hold Esc and Refresh.
  2. While holding those keys, press Power.
  3. Release Power when the recovery screen appears, then release the other keys.

On some models, the key labeled Maximize is used instead of Refresh. If Esc plus Refresh does not produce the recovery screen, follow the model-specific instructions supplied by Google for that Chromebook rather than repeatedly forcing the same sequence.

  • LED Indicator: The end of the USB storage flash drive is designed with an indicator. The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.

Chromebook tablets

Chromebook tablets use a volume-button and power-button combination rather than the laptop keyboard sequence. The exact buttons and timing vary by device, so use the instructions for the tablet model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chromebox and Chromebit

Chromebox and Chromebit devices have distinct recovery procedures. Do not apply the laptop key sequence automatically; follow Google’s device-type instructions for the particular model.

Reinstall ChromeOS from the USB

  1. Insert the recovery USB into the affected device while the recovery screen is displayed, if it is not already connected.
  2. Choose “Recover using external disk.” This tells the Chromebook to use the USB media rather than another recovery method.
  3. Follow every on-screen instruction. The device verifies the media and reinstalls ChromeOS. Do not remove the USB or interrupt power while the process is running.
  4. Allow the Chromebook to restart. When recovery finishes, complete the normal ChromeOS setup and sign in again.

Newer Chromebooks may offer internet recovery. If that option is shown and the device has a reliable internet connection, you may be able to use it without a USB. USB recovery remains the documented choice when internet recovery is unavailable or the Chromebook cannot get online.

The reinstall erases local Chromebook data. Recovery does not preserve downloaded files or other content stored on the device’s internal drive.

What to do if the USB is rejected

Recovery errors usually point to the media, the selected model or the Chromebook’s hardware. Work through the branches below in order instead of repeatedly retrying an unchanged setup.

“Unexpected error” or the drive is not accepted

  • Remove the USB and recreate the media with Chromebook Recovery Utility.
  • Use the utility’s erase function on the storage device before trying again.
  • Try a different USB flash drive. Google notes that some flash drives do not work reliably for recovery even when they meet the capacity requirement.
  • Confirm that the selected drive is the one you intended to erase.

The recovery image does not match the Chromebook

  • Return to the utility and select the affected Chromebook’s exact model.
  • If the model is unclear, read the model number shown near the bottom of the recovery error screen and enter that number in the utility.
  • Do not replace the model-specific image with a ChromeOS Flex installer.
  • Confirm that the USB currently inserted is the drive created for this Chromebook, not an older recovery drive made for another device.

The same error appears with a newly created drive

Recreate the media once, then test another USB drive. If the error continues with correctly selected media, Google says the storage device may not be working properly. Persistent recovery failures can require help from the Chromebook manufacturer.

The Chromebook belongs to a school or employer

Managed Chromebooks can be subject to administrator controls. Contact the school or workplace administrator rather than attempting to bypass management. Administrators should contact Google support for managed-device recovery assistance.

The Chromebook will not reach a recovery screen

  • Verify that you are using the key sequence for the correct device type.
  • Try the alternate laptop sequence that uses Esc and Maximize if the model supports it.
  • For a tablet, use the documented volume-and-power procedure instead of a laptop keyboard combination.
  • For a Chromebox or Chromebit, follow the separate device instructions.
  • Disconnect peripherals and retry with only the recovery USB attached.

If none of these steps produces recovery mode, the problem may extend beyond the ChromeOS installation and should be escalated to the manufacturer.

Recovery USB versus a factory reset or ChromeOS Flex

Option When it fits Effect on the device
Restart The Chromebook is behaving incorrectly but still responds normally. Attempts a basic restart without the documented recovery-media process.
Factory reset You can still sign in and less-invasive troubleshooting has failed. Resets the Chromebook; Google recommends considering this before full recovery when sign-in remains possible.
USB recovery The device shows “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” or other troubleshooting has failed. Reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local data.
Internet recovery A newer Chromebook offers the option and has internet access. Uses the device’s internet-based recovery path instead of a USB when available.
ChromeOS Flex installer You are installing Flex through its separate supported workflow. Uses a Flex installation USB; it is not the ordinary model-specific recovery process for a Chromebook.

The key distinction is purpose. Recovery repairs the ChromeOS installation on the affected Chromebook with media selected for that model. Flex is a separate installation path, so using its USB when you need Chromebook recovery can lead to the wrong image and the wrong procedure.

After recovery finishes

Remove the USB at the appropriate time

Keep the drive connected until the on-screen process says recovery is complete or the Chromebook restarts into setup. Removing it early can interrupt the reinstall. Once ChromeOS starts normally, remove the recovery drive when prompted or after setup no longer needs it.

  • Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)

Reuse or store the recovery drive

If you want to keep the drive for future recovery, store it with the Chromebook model it was created for. If you need the USB for ordinary storage, open Chromebook Recovery Utility, open Settings, and choose Erase recovery media. This erases the recovery image; afterward, use the operating system’s normal formatting tool if you need a different file-system format.

Restore files carefully

Only restore files from backups you made before recovery. The recovery operation itself does not bring back files that were stored solely in the Chromebook’s local storage.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you tried a restart?
  • If you can still sign in, have you considered a factory reset first?
  • Have you copied every accessible local file?
  • Do you have a working Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome?
  • Is the USB flash drive at least 8 GB and safe to erase?
  • Have you identified the affected Chromebook’s exact model?
  • Are you creating Chromebook recovery media rather than ChromeOS Flex media?
  • Have you disconnected peripherals from the affected device?
  • Are you using the recovery-mode instructions for the correct device type?
  • Will you leave the USB connected until the on-screen process finishes?

Frequently asked questions

Does a recovery USB preserve downloaded files?

No. Recovery permanently erases local data, including downloaded files. Back up anything you can access before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use any USB flash drive?

Use a flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity that can be erased. Google notes that some drives may not work reliably, so try another drive if the first one produces errors.

Can I create the USB on a Windows or Mac computer?

Yes. Install Chrome if necessary, then open Chromebook Recovery Utility and follow the same model-selection and media-creation steps.

Is ChromeOS Flex the same as Chromebook recovery?

No. Flex has a separate installer workflow. Chromebook recovery requires the recovery image for the affected Chromebook’s model.

What if my Chromebook is managed by school or work?

Contact the administrator. Managed-device recovery may require administrator or Google support assistance.
