1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTry the least-destructive fix first. If your Chromebook still starts and you can sign in, restart it and work through basic troubleshooting. Use Powerwash (a factory reset) for a damaged user profile, bad settings, persistent abnormal behavior, or an ownership change. Use recovery when ChromeOS reports “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” or when serious problems remain after troubleshooting and Powerwash.
Back up local files before either operation. Powerwash erases local user data, including Downloads. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s internal drive. Files already in Google Drive or on external storage are not deleted by Powerwash.

The decision in one minute
| Question | Choose Powerwash | Choose recovery |
|---|---|---|
| What changes? | Erases local user data and returns the Chromebook to factory settings. | Removes and reinstalls ChromeOS. |
| Typical trigger | A broken profile or setting, persistent odd behavior, or a change of ownership. | The message “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” or a serious problem that remains after other fixes. |
| When in the sequence? | After restart and less-invasive troubleshooting, while the Chromebook still starts. | After those steps if sign-in still works; use the on-screen recovery flow directly for a missing-or-damaged-OS error. |
| What happens to local data? | Local files, settings, and installed apps are erased. Google Drive and external-storage files remain. | Everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive is permanently erased, including downloaded files. |
| What do you need? | No recovery media; the built-in reset screen is enough. | Internet recovery on a supported newer model, or an at-least-8-GB USB drive and another Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome. |
| Managed work or school device | Contact the administrator before attempting a reset. | Contact the administrator before attempting recovery. |
Powerwash and recovery are not interchangeable names for the same operation. Powerwash resets the user environment. Recovery replaces the operating system itself. That difference determines both the correct order and the risk to data.

What to do before erasing anything
Confirm where your files are stored
Open the Files app and inspect Downloads, local folders, removable media, and any cloud folders. Copy anything important from local storage to Google Drive, an external hard drive, or another safe computer. A file that is visible in a browser service is not necessarily stored locally, so verify the copy before resetting.

Powerwash does not delete files that are already in Google Drive or on external storage. It does erase local Downloads and other data on the Chromebook. Recovery is broader: Google describes it as permanently erasing everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive.
Check whether the Chromebook is managed
If the device belongs to an employer or school, stop and contact the administrator. Managed Chromebooks can have reset restrictions, enrollment requirements, and policies that a consumer reset cannot resolve. Google’s consumer factory-reset guidance says users of work or school devices may not be able to perform the described reset themselves.
Record information you will need afterward
- Make sure you know the Google Account credentials that should own the Chromebook after a reset.
- Save recovery codes, license keys, local configuration notes, and any two-factor-authentication backup methods that are not synchronized online.
- Disconnect docks, monitors, storage devices, and other accessories unless the on-screen instructions specifically require one.
- Keep the charger connected. An interruption during an operating-system reinstall can leave the device unable to start.
Try troubleshooting before Powerwash
When the Chromebook still boots, an erase should not be the first response to a temporary or isolated fault. Google’s troubleshooting order starts with simpler actions and places recovery later.
Restart normally
Save open work, sign out if possible, and choose the regular restart command. A restart clears a transient process failure without deleting files. Test the original problem after the device comes back.
Test extensions and browser settings
If the trouble appears only in Chrome, an extension or browser setting may be responsible. Turn extensions off one at a time, testing after each change. Removing one suspect at a time identifies the cause without wiping the entire profile. Re-enable unaffected extensions after testing.

- 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
Use the update troubleshooting sequence
For update failures, Google lists a progression of restart, a working Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, a reset that preserves personal files, and then recovery if the problem persists. Follow that sequence rather than jumping straight to an erase. A network change can matter: test a reliable connection and avoid interrupting an update once it has begun.
Understand the hardware hard reset
A hardware hard reset is a separate troubleshooting action. It restarts hardware such as the keyboard and touchpad; it does not reinstall ChromeOS and is not the same as Powerwash. Google recommends trying it only after other ways to fix the problem have failed, and warns that it might delete some files in Downloads. Move important Downloads files first, then follow the model-specific hard-reset instructions.
If the Chromebook now works normally, stop here. There is no benefit to Powerwashing a device whose problem has been resolved.
When Powerwash is the right next step
Use Powerwash for profile and settings problems
Powerwash is appropriate when the Chromebook starts and accepts a sign-in but the user environment remains corrupt or abnormal. Examples include a profile that behaves incorrectly after extensions and settings have been checked, persistent unexplained behavior after a restart, or a device that is changing owners.
It is also the normal factory-reset route when you are preparing the Chromebook for another person. The first account that signs in after the reset becomes the owner account, so do not sign in with a temporary account if someone else will own the device.

What Powerwash removes
Powerwash erases user data on the Chromebook’s internal storage, including Downloads, settings, and installed apps, and returns the device to its factory state. It does not delete files stored in Google Drive or on external storage. Anything that exists only locally must be backed up first.

Powerwash steps
- Sign out of the Chromebook. If you cannot reach the sign-out command, restart and try again; the reset shortcut is intended for the sign-in-capable device flow.
- Press
Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R. - In the reset dialog, select Restart.
- When the reset screen appears, choose Powerwash, then select Continue.
- Let the Chromebook complete the reset without closing the lid or removing power.
- At the setup screen, connect to the network and sign in with the account that should become the owner.
The reset does not repair a missing ChromeOS installation. If the device displays the missing-or-damaged message, or if the same serious failure remains after Powerwash, move to recovery instead of repeating the reset.
When recovery is the right choice
Use recovery for an operating-system failure
Recovery is designed for a damaged or missing ChromeOS installation. The clearest trigger is the on-screen message “ChromeOS is missing or damaged.” It is also the next step when restart, connectivity checks, file-preserving reset options, and Powerwash have not fixed a serious problem.
Google Chromebook Help summarizes the operation in one sentence: “Recovery removes and reinstalls the OS.” That is more extensive than a factory reset of the user profile. Recovery writes a fresh ChromeOS installation and permanently erases the internal hard drive’s contents.
Recovery’s data-loss warning
Assume that every local file will be lost. Downloaded documents, screenshots, offline media, Linux or Android application data, and local settings are all at risk because the hard drive is erased. Back up what you can before starting. If the Chromebook cannot boot far enough to copy files, recovery may leave no practical way to retrieve them through normal ChromeOS tools.

Choose internet recovery when it is offered
Supported newer Chromebooks may offer recovery over the internet. This route avoids creating a USB installer, but it still erases the device and requires a reliable connection. Follow the prompts shown by the Chromebook; availability depends on the model and its recovery support.
Use USB recovery when internet recovery is unavailable
USB recovery is the alternative when the device has no usable internet connection or does not offer the online route. You need:
- A USB flash drive with capacity of at least 8 GB.
- A drive you are willing to erase; recovery-media creation removes its existing contents.
- Another Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome installed.
- The affected Chromebook and its charger.
An at-least-8-GB drive is a minimum requirement, not a promise that every model or drive will work. Do not use the only copy of important files as recovery media.

Start with the model’s on-screen instructions
On most Chromebook laptops, remove connected devices, hold Esc and Refresh, then press Power. Some models use Esc and Maximize instead of Refresh. Tablets and other ChromeOS device types can use different button sequences.
Because the shortcut varies, use the prompt displayed by the device and the instructions for its exact model rather than forcing the laptop combination onto a tablet or detachable. Once recovery mode appears, select the recovery method offered on screen.

- Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)
Follow the built-in recovery flow
- Remove external devices that the recovery screen does not request.
- Enter recovery mode with the model-appropriate key sequence.
- Read the warning about erased local storage.
- Select internet recovery if the Chromebook offers it and the connection is dependable.
- If online recovery is unavailable, choose the external-disk or USB recovery option.
- Allow the installation to finish and keep the charger connected.
Creating and using a USB recovery drive
Create the media on another computer
- On another Chromebook or on a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome, open Google’s Chromebook Recovery Utility.
- Insert the USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. Everything on this drive will be erased.
- In the utility, select the affected Chromebook’s model. If prompted, identify the model from the recovery screen or the device label.
- Confirm the USB drive and start creation. Wait until the utility reports completion before removing it.
The utility writes a model-specific recovery image. Do not use the drive for ordinary storage during this process, and do not unplug it while it is being created.
Run external recovery on the affected Chromebook
- Enter recovery mode on the affected Chromebook.
- Insert the recovery USB drive when the screen asks for external media.
- Select the external-disk recovery option and confirm the erase warning.
- Wait for ChromeOS to be removed and reinstalled. The Chromebook may restart more than once.
- When setup returns, remove the USB drive only when the screen permits it.
Fix a failed USB attempt
Some USB drives do not work reliably with Chromebook recovery. If the utility or Chromebook reports repeated recovery errors, erase the storage device and try again. If the error continues, use a different compatible USB drive rather than repeatedly retrying the same failing media. After a successful installation, the recovery drive can be erased and reused as ordinary storage.
Common situations and the correct branch
The Chromebook starts, but one account is broken
Restart, test extensions, and verify the issue is limited to that profile. Back up local data, then Powerwash. Recovery is unnecessary unless ChromeOS itself reports damage or the fault survives the reset.
The Chromebook starts but remains unusually unstable
Complete the basic troubleshooting sequence and a hardware reset if appropriate. If the abnormal behavior persists, Powerwash is the next built-in reset. If the instability continues after Powerwash, use recovery.
The screen says “ChromeOS is missing or damaged”
Use the recovery flow shown on screen. This message indicates an operating-system problem, so a normal profile reset is not the primary remedy. Follow the model-specific prompts and back up anything that remains accessible before confirming.
The Chromebook will not turn on
Check power and charging first, then use the device’s recovery instructions if the screen provides them. A hardware hard reset and OS recovery solve different classes of problem; recovery cannot repair a dead battery, failed display, or other physical fault.
You are selling or handing over the Chromebook
Back up local files, sign out, and use Powerwash. The first account used during the next setup becomes the owner. A full OS recovery is not required merely to remove your profile unless ChromeOS itself is damaged.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAfter Powerwash or recovery
- Complete network setup and install pending ChromeOS updates before restoring files.
- Sign in with the intended owner account, not a guest or temporary account.
- Restore files from Google Drive or your verified external backup.
- Reinstall only the extensions and apps you trust; adding everything at once can reintroduce a profile problem.
- Test sleep, keyboard, touchpad, Wi-Fi, audio, camera, and the task that originally failed.
- If the original error returns after recovery, record its exact wording and contact the device manufacturer or your organization’s administrator; repeating the same erase is unlikely to add information.
In short, restart and troubleshoot first, Powerwash a functioning Chromebook with a damaged user environment, and recover when ChromeOS itself is missing, damaged, or still seriously broken after the reset. Both paths require a backup, but recovery is the full operating-system reinstall and the more destructive operation.
