Chromebook Phone Hub and Samsung DeX solve different problems. Phone Hub is a continuity layer that brings selected Android-phone functions—status, notifications, messages, recent photos, Chrome tabs and quick controls—to a Chromebook. Samsung DeX turns a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet into a desktop-style workspace on a TV or monitor. Phone Hub is primarily about working between two devices; DeX is about using one mobile device as the computer for an external screen.
Choose Phone Hub when your Chromebook is your main computer and you want phone information and controls nearby. Choose DeX when you want mobile apps arranged for keyboard-and-mouse use on a larger display. They can also complement each other, but neither is a universal replacement for the other.

Phone Hub and DeX at a glance
| Question | Chromebook Phone Hub | Samsung DeX |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Connects an Android phone to a Chromebook for continuity features. | Creates a desktop-style interface from a compatible Galaxy device. |
| Main screen | The Chromebook display. | An external TV, monitor or other supported display; some modes also involve a PC. |
| Typical features | Phone status, hotspot control, notifications, texts, recent photos, Chrome tabs, phone location or silencing, and Chromebook unlocking. | Mobile apps in resizable desktop-like windows, with optional keyboard and mouse control. |
| Connection options | Account pairing, Bluetooth and supported phone-to-Chromebook connectivity. App streaming additionally needs proximity and a shared Wi-Fi network. | USB-C-to-HDMI or other compatible wired accessories, or wireless display connections where both devices support them. |
| Best for | Keeping phone information available while using a Chromebook. | Using a Galaxy device as a larger-screen workspace. |
| Biggest limitation | Phone Hub does not turn the Chromebook into a complete mirror of every phone app; app streaming is restricted to eligible devices, software and apps. | DeX compatibility varies by Galaxy model, display, accessory and connection mode. |
These are different categories rather than competing desktop modes. Phone Hub extends a Chromebook with phone-related functions. DeX extends a Galaxy device with an external-display interface.
What Chromebook Phone Hub can do
Show phone status and provide quick controls
The Phone Hub panel can show the connected phone’s cellular signal and battery status without requiring you to pick up the phone. It also exposes controls documented by Google for actions such as turning on the phone’s hotspot, silencing the phone and locating it. These controls are useful when the phone is in another room or buried in a bag, but they do not make every phone setting available in ChromeOS.

Bring notifications and messages to the Chromebook
Phone Hub can synchronize supported phone notifications to the Chromebook. Google’s Android-to-Chromebook documentation also describes syncing chat notifications and sending and receiving text messages from the Chromebook. You can therefore read and answer supported conversations while working in a Chromebook window instead of switching devices for every alert.
Notification behavior depends on the phone, ChromeOS version, account pairing and any permissions you grant. A work or school administrator can restrict these connected-device functions, so an otherwise compatible personal setup may not expose them on a managed Chromebook.
Access recent photos and screenshots
The panel can display recent Gallery photos and screenshots from the Android phone, with an option to download them to the Chromebook. This is designed for quick handoff—such as moving a picture into a document or message—not for presenting the entire phone storage as a mounted drive. The available items and timing depend on the phone’s Gallery state and the connection.
Recommended Free Tools
Open Chrome tabs from the phone
Phone Hub can list Chrome tabs opened on the Android phone so you can continue browsing on the Chromebook. This is particularly useful when a page was found on the phone but is easier to read or use with a full keyboard. It is a tab handoff, not a promise that every browser state or app session will transfer.
Use the phone’s network and unlock the Chromebook
Google’s broader integration documentation includes connecting the Chromebook to the phone’s network and using the phone to unlock the Chromebook. Network sharing still depends on the phone’s mobile service and hotspot behavior. Unlock features depend on supported software, proximity and the security policies configured on both devices.
What remains available offline
Google says Phone Hub features can still be used while the Chromebook is offline. That does not mean every action works without a network: viewing information already synchronized locally may continue, while enabling a hotspot, sending a message or performing another service-dependent action needs the underlying phone or internet connection. Treat offline availability as resilience for the integration, not as an offline replacement for cellular or web services.

Phone Hub app streaming is a separate, narrower feature
Phone Hub’s ability to show and interact with supported phone apps in a Chromebook window has stricter requirements than notifications, tabs or status information. Google requires an eligible phone model and software, physical proximity and a shared Wi-Fi network. Some public or private networks may not work, even when both devices appear to be online.
Examples of eligible phones
Google’s current help information lists Pixel 4a and later phones running Android 13 or newer, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and selected Xiaomi models as examples. This is not a universal list of Android phones. Eligibility can change as Google adds devices, and a phone that supports ordinary Phone Hub functions may not support app streaming.
App-level restrictions
Streaming requires the relevant permissions and a supported app. Google warns that some DRM-protected entertainment apps may not behave as expected. A streaming window can therefore fail or show limited behavior even when the phone and Chromebook meet the hardware and software requirements. Check Google’s current support list for the exact model, Android release and feature combination before relying on app streaming.
What Samsung DeX can do
Turn a compatible Galaxy device into an external-screen workspace
Samsung DeX presents supported Galaxy phone or tablet apps in a desktop-style layout on an external display. Instead of viewing a phone-sized screen, you can arrange app windows and use a larger monitor or TV for email, documents, web pages and other supported mobile applications. The exact app behavior remains dependent on each Android app: some scale well, some stay phone-like and some do not support every desktop convention.
Use wired HDMI connections
Samsung documents wired DeX connections through a DeX or HDMI cable, or through a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. The Galaxy device must support video output and DeX, and the display must accept the chosen HDMI connection. A cable or adapter is not automatically compatible merely because its plug fits the phone; verify the Galaxy model and accessory requirements first.
The Tool Desk

Keyboard and mouse control is optional, not a prerequisite. You can start DeX with the phone’s own controls, but external input makes window management and text entry much more practical. Whether the peripherals connect to the phone, display or another hub depends on the DeX setup and accessory arrangement.

Use wireless DeX with a compatible display
Wireless DeX can connect supported Galaxy devices to compatible TVs and monitors. Samsung says the wireless path supports 2018-and-later Samsung TVs, Samsung Smart Monitors and other Miracast-capable displays, subject to the supported Galaxy model. Wireless compatibility is therefore a two-sided check: the phone or tablet and the display must both support the required mode.
Keep DeX for PC separate from TV and monitor DeX
Samsung’s current United States support information states that DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later and directs users toward Link to Windows as an alternative. That limitation applies to the PC application mode. It should not be read as a blanket cancellation of wired or wireless DeX to a TV or monitor, which Samsung documents separately. Always check the compatibility list for the exact connection mode you intend to use.
Which one fits a particular task?
| Your task | Better fit | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|

| Run an eligible phone app in a Chromebook window | Phone Hub, if eligible | Requires a supported phone and software, proximity, shared Wi-Fi and a compatible app; DRM restrictions may apply. |
| Use mobile apps on a TV or monitor in a desktop-like layout | DeX, if compatible | DeX is designed for an external-display workspace and supports optional keyboard and mouse input. |
| Connect a Galaxy device to an HDMI monitor without wireless display | Wired DeX | Use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or HDMI accessory after confirming video-output support. |
| Connect a Galaxy device wirelessly | Wireless DeX | The Galaxy device and display must support Samsung’s wireless requirements, such as Miracast compatibility. |
| Use a Galaxy phone with a PC application | Check DeX for PC separately | Android 15 with One UI 7 or later is not supported for DeX for PC on Samsung’s current US support page. |
How to set up Phone Hub
Check the prerequisites first
- Use a Chromebook running ChromeOS M89 or newer and an Android phone running Android 5.1 or newer for the general Phone Hub baseline documented by Google.
- Sign in to the same Google Account on the Chromebook and phone.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled and place the devices near each other during pairing.
- Install current system updates. Individual functions can require newer ChromeOS or Android releases than the general minimum.
- On a work or school device, confirm that the administrator allows connected-device features.
Pair the phone
- On the Chromebook, open Settings and the connected-device or Phone Hub section.
- Choose the option to set up or connect an Android phone, then select the phone associated with the same Google Account.
- Confirm the pairing prompts on both devices and grant the permissions requested for notifications, messages, photos or other features you intend to use.
- Open the Phone Hub panel from the Chromebook shelf or Settings to verify that battery and signal information appear.
- Turn on individual options—such as notification synchronization, photo access, phone unlocking or hotspot controls—only after checking the permissions and privacy behavior you want.
Enable app streaming when supported
- Confirm that the phone model and Android version appear on Google’s current Phone Hub app-streaming eligibility list.
- Place the phone close to the Chromebook and connect both to the same Wi-Fi network. Avoid assuming that a hotel, guest or enterprise network will support the feature.
- Open Phone Hub and select an eligible app or the app-streaming control.
- Approve any phone permission prompt. If the app does not open, test a non-DRM app and check proximity, Wi-Fi isolation and software versions before concluding that the phone is unsupported.
How to set up Samsung DeX
Wired setup
- Check Samsung’s current DeX compatibility information for the exact Galaxy phone or tablet and confirm that it supports video output.
- Choose a compatible DeX cable, HDMI cable or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee DeX or display output.
- Connect the adapter or cable to the Galaxy device and the HDMI input on the monitor or TV.
- Switch the display to the correct HDMI input and accept the DeX prompt on the Galaxy device.
- Add a keyboard and mouse if you need desktop-style text entry and navigation; they are optional.
Wireless setup
- Verify that the Galaxy model supports wireless DeX and that the TV or monitor supports Samsung’s required wireless display path.
- On the display, enable the relevant screen-sharing or wireless-display mode.
- On the Galaxy device, open the DeX or quick-settings control and select the available compatible display.
- Confirm the connection on both screens. If the display is not listed, check Miracast support, firmware, distance and whether another device is already using the display’s wireless input.
PC mode
If your goal is DeX inside a computer window rather than on a TV or monitor, verify the operating-system and One UI combination first. Samsung’s US documentation excludes models on Android 15 with One UI 7 or later from DeX for PC. Do not buy a cable or reorganize a monitor setup expecting that PC-specific mode to work when the restriction applies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan either feature replace a laptop?
Phone Hub is not a laptop replacement
Phone Hub assumes that the Chromebook remains the computer. It makes a phone’s selected functions easier to reach, but it does not provide a second full desktop operating system inside ChromeOS. Its value is reduced context switching: phone alerts, photos, tabs, texts and controls appear alongside Chromebook work.
DeX can be a practical light-work computer
DeX can handle many tasks that benefit from a large display, keyboard and mouse, especially when the required Android apps support resizable windows and desktop input. It can be a useful travel or living-room setup when carrying a Galaxy device is easier than carrying a separate computer.
DeX is not a guaranteed laptop substitute. App compatibility, file workflows, browser extensions, specialist desktop software, display availability and the Galaxy model all matter. A monitor and accessories are also required for the external-screen experience, while a laptop includes its own screen and keyboard.

Buying and compatibility checklist
Before relying on Phone Hub
- Confirm the Chromebook is on ChromeOS M89 or newer and the phone is on Android 5.1 or newer for general integration.
- Check that both devices use the same Google Account.
- Check administrator restrictions if the Chromebook belongs to an employer or school.
- For app streaming, verify the exact model, Android version, proximity requirement, shared Wi-Fi behavior and app restrictions.
- No dedicated adapter is required for ordinary Phone Hub functions.
Before buying DeX accessories
- Confirm support for DeX on the exact Galaxy model, not merely the device’s USB-C connector.
- For wired use, verify video output and compatibility with the intended USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or HDMI cable.
- For wireless use, verify both Galaxy support and display support, including Miracast or the relevant Samsung display category.
- Decide whether you need TV/monitor DeX or DeX for PC; they have separate compatibility rules.
- Treat keyboard and mouse as optional productivity additions rather than required purchases.
Troubleshooting common failures
Phone Hub does not appear
Check that both devices use the same Google Account, Bluetooth is enabled, the phone is nearby and the Chromebook is not blocked by an administrator. Update ChromeOS and Android, then remove and repeat the pairing process if the phone still does not appear.
Notifications or messages are missing
Review notification and messaging permissions on the phone and the connected-device settings on the Chromebook. A managed account may disable synchronization, and a phone notification that is suppressed at the source will not become available through Phone Hub.
App streaming fails while other Phone Hub features work
This usually indicates an app-streaming-specific issue rather than a failure of the whole connection. Check eligible-model status, Android and ChromeOS versions, physical proximity, shared Wi-Fi and network isolation. Test without a DRM-protected entertainment app, because Google documents that some such apps may not behave as expected.
DeX shows no image on the monitor
Confirm that the Galaxy model supports DeX and video output, the adapter supports display output, the HDMI input is selected and the cable is seated. Try another supported HDMI input or display before assuming the phone is defective.
Wireless DeX cannot find the TV or monitor
Check that the display supports the required wireless mode and that the Galaxy model supports wireless DeX. Update display firmware, leave the display’s wireless-sharing screen open and disconnect other active wireless-display sessions.
DeX for PC stopped working after an update
If the Galaxy device now runs Android 15 with One UI 7 or later, the current Samsung US support information says DeX for PC is unsupported on that combination. Wired or wireless DeX to a compatible TV or monitor is a different mode and must be checked separately.
Choosing between them
Select Phone Hub if your day already centers on a Chromebook and your main problem is switching between the Chromebook and an Android phone. Select DeX if your priority is a larger-screen workspace powered by a compatible Galaxy device. If you own both a Chromebook and a supported Galaxy phone, there is no need to force a single winner: Phone Hub can handle continuity while DeX can provide an external-display workspace when you are near a compatible monitor or TV.
