If the check fails, restart the computer, verify that your operating system is supported, make sure security software allows Chrome’s update services, and then reinstall Chrome using the installer appropriate for your platform. This order moves from the least disruptive fix to a clean, supported installation.
What a failed Chrome update usually means
Chrome normally checks for updates in the background and applies an available update after you close and reopen the browser. An “update failed” message means that one of the steps in that process did not complete. The cause may be temporary, such as a pending reboot, or structural, such as an unsupported operating system or a device-management policy.

Common causes include:
- An update is downloaded but waiting for Chrome or the computer to restart.
- The update service cannot reach Google’s servers or the download is interrupted.
- Antivirus, firewall, parental-control, proxy or DNS filtering blocks update traffic.
- Chrome files are missing or corrupted.
- An administrator policy disables updates on a managed computer.
- Unwanted software interferes with the browser or its updater.
- The operating system or processor no longer meets the requirements for current Chrome releases.
The visible wording matters. “Relaunch to Update” is normally a pending-installation state; “Updates are disabled by administrator” points to policy or permissions; a download or server error points first to connectivity and security controls; and repeated failures after reinstalling suggest an operating-system, permissions or malware problem.

Check Chrome’s update state first
- Open Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Help > About Chrome.
- Wait while Chrome checks its version and update status.
- If Relaunch to Update appears, save open work, close any important tabs or downloads, and click the button.
Chrome’s About page also shows whether it is checking, downloading, installing or already up to date. A relaunch applies a package Chrome has already obtained; it does not repair a failed download or an unsupported installation. If the page displays an error instead of a relaunch option, continue with the checks below.

Restart the computer before changing anything else
A system restart can complete an update that is waiting on a locked file, a service restart or a pending operating-system action. Close applications, restart the computer normally, open Chrome again and repeat Help > About Chrome. This is the safest next step because it does not remove your profile, extensions or saved settings.
Check whether an administrator controls updates
When the message says updates are disabled
A work, school or family-managed device may enforce a Chrome policy that prevents users from updating. The policy can be delivered by device-management software, a domain administrator or security configuration. On such a computer, changing local settings or downloading a different installer may violate the organization’s policy and still will not produce a supported result.
Ask the person or organization that manages the computer to approve or deploy the current Chrome version. If you own the device but a previous management tool remains installed, remove that management configuration only through the tool’s documented process; do not try to bypass an administrator restriction.
When permissions stop an installer
An installation can fail if your account cannot write to the required program folders or start update services. Sign in with an account that has administrator rights, or ask an administrator to perform the installation. Repeatedly running installers without the required permission can leave a partial installation and make later repairs harder.

Allow Chrome’s update traffic through security controls
Google identifies tools.google.com and dl.google.com as domains that update-related network controls must allow. Antivirus, firewall and parental-control software must also permit software-update activity. A browser may continue to open websites while its updater is blocked, so ordinary web access does not prove that the update path works.
Check the controls that commonly interfere
- Review antivirus web protection and application-control logs for blocked Chrome or Google update processes.
- Check the firewall’s outbound rules and allow Chrome’s updater to connect to the two Google domains above.
- Inspect parental-control, content-filtering, DNS-filtering and secure-web-gateway rules for those domains.
- If the computer uses a proxy, confirm that the proxy permits software downloads and that its credentials have not expired.
- Temporarily pause a security product only if you control the device and understand the risk; restore protection immediately after testing.
Do not whitelist an entire category of websites or disable all security software permanently. The goal is a narrow exception for the updater, followed by another About Chrome check. On a managed network, the administrator must make this change.
Verify that your operating system can run current Chrome
A browser update cannot make an unsupported operating system compatible. Google’s current requirements list the following baselines:

To identify the issue, check the operating system’s version and whether it is 64-bit, then compare it with the baseline above. If the system is below the requirement, update the operating system or move to a supported computer. Installing an older Chrome build may leave you without current security fixes and is not a solution to a support problem.

Reinstall Chrome when files are missing or corrupted
Google’s supported repair sequence is to uninstall Chrome, verify the system requirements, download Chrome again and reinstall it. Use this route when About Chrome repeatedly reports missing files, the updater fails after a restart and network check, or Chrome will not launch reliably.
Before uninstalling
- Confirm that you can sign back in to any profile whose data is not synchronized.
- Export or otherwise preserve bookmarks that exist only locally.
- Record extensions or settings you will need to restore.
- Finish or cancel downloads and close Chrome windows.
- Make sure you have an administrator account or access to one.
Uninstalling the application does not automatically solve every profile problem. If a profile folder is damaged or unwanted software keeps returning, the underlying issue can survive a simple reinstall.
Windows: use the standalone installer if the normal installer fails
- Open Windows Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps (the wording may vary slightly by Windows release).
- Find Google Chrome, choose its menu and select Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal. If offered a choice to delete browsing data, select it only after verifying that synchronized or backed-up data is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Download Chrome again from Google’s official Chrome download page.
- If the regular web installer fails, choose Google’s standalone installer, which contains the installation package instead of depending on the small bootstrap download.
- Run the installer with an administrator account, wait for setup to finish, then open Chrome and use Help > About Chrome to verify the installed version.
A standalone installer helps when the initial downloader cannot reach Google or is interrupted. It will not overcome an administrator policy, an unsupported Windows version or a firewall that blocks the final installation or update service.

Mac: download Google Software Update again
- Open Applications in Finder and locate Google Chrome.
- Quit Chrome and move the application to the Trash, following macOS’s confirmation prompts.
- Check Applications for programs you do not recognize. Remove suspicious software with its own uninstaller when available, or move it to the Trash if no uninstaller exists.
- Restart the Mac.
- Download Google Software Update again from Google’s official Chrome download page and run the installer.
- Open Chrome and select Help > About Google Chrome to confirm that the browser can check for updates.
Removing the application does not necessarily remove every user profile or extension. Preserve local bookmarks first, and investigate unfamiliar applications if update failures return after a clean installation.

Linux: match the package to the distribution and architecture
Linux installations depend on the distribution’s package system and processor architecture. Confirm that the system is a supported 64-bit release before downloading a package. Use the package format and installation method documented for that distribution, then allow the system’s package manager to apply future Chrome updates. A package built for another distribution or for a different architecture will not repair the installation.
If the package manager reports a dependency, permission or repository error, fix that system-level error first. Running an unrelated installer repeatedly can create conflicting files and does not replace a supported repository configuration.

Google notes that unwanted software can stop Chrome from updating. Symptoms include new extensions you did not install, changed search or startup pages, repeated redirects, security warnings that return after removal, or update failures that recur immediately after reinstalling.
Mac investigation
Open Applications and look for programs you do not recognize. Remove them with their supplied uninstaller when possible; otherwise move them to Trash, restart the Mac and run the update check again. Do not delete a program solely because its name is unfamiliar if it belongs to your employer, security provider or another trusted administrator.
Windows and Linux investigation
Use the operating system’s installed-app list, startup controls and security scanner to identify software you did not intentionally install. Remove suspicious programs through their documented uninstall process, restart, and then repeat the Chrome update check. If the unwanted software reinstalls itself or blocks security tools, seek help from the device administrator or a reputable security professional rather than downloading random “repair” utilities.
Choose the least disruptive fix that fits the failure

How to install the latest Chrome version manually
“Manual update” normally means initiating the official installer yourself, not downloading an old version from a third-party archive. Use this sequence:
- Confirm that Windows, macOS or Linux meets Google’s current requirements.
- Close Chrome and save local work.
- Use Google’s official Chrome download page and select the package for your operating system and architecture.
- On Windows, choose the standalone installer if the standard downloader has already failed.
- On Mac, download Google Software Update again after removing the damaged application.
- On Linux, select the package that matches the supported distribution and 64-bit architecture, then install it with the distribution’s normal package mechanism.
- Open Chrome after installation and go to Help > About Chrome (or Help > About Google Chrome on Mac).
- Wait for the version check to complete. If Chrome offers Relaunch to Update, click it and verify the status again.
Keep the installer source official and current. A manual installation cannot make an unsupported operating system secure, remove a management policy or guarantee that blocked update domains will work.

Separate a Chrome problem from a system problem
If a fresh installation opens but cannot update, the browser files are probably not the only issue. Test the same network with another supported device, check whether the computer’s date and time are correct, and review proxy or filtering logs. If every device on the network fails, the network policy is the likely control point. If only one computer fails, local permissions, security software or unwanted software deserve closer attention.
Use the right escalation path
- For a managed computer, contact the administrator rather than changing policy settings.
- For a home computer with blocked permissions, use an account with administrator rights.
- For a supported system that still cannot reinstall, use the Chrome Help Forum or Google’s installation-troubleshooting page.
- Provide the exact About Chrome message, operating-system version, processor architecture and whether the standalone installer or Google Software Update was used.
Those details distinguish a pending relaunch from a blocked download, an unsupported platform or a damaged installation and prevent repeated attempts at the wrong fix.
After Chrome updates successfully
- Return to Help > About Chrome and confirm that the browser reports it is up to date.
- Re-enable any antivirus or firewall protection that was paused for testing.
- Remove temporary firewall or parental-control exceptions that are no longer needed, while leaving the required Google update domains permitted.
- Review extensions and installed applications for anything you do not recognize.
- On a managed device, confirm with the administrator that the approved version is installed.
If the update succeeds only once and fails again at the next release, treat that pattern as evidence of a persistent policy, network filter, permissions problem or unwanted program rather than repeatedly reinstalling Chrome.
