Chrome Tab search finds tabs that are still open. The Recent Tabs or closed-tab recovery route is for reopening something you closed, and some mobile views may also show tabs associated with other devices. If the page is open somewhere in your current Chrome window, search for it; if you closed it, use the restore command or the platform’s recent-tabs view.
The difference in one minute
These features sound similar because both help you get back to a page, but they search different places and perform different actions. Tab search searches Chrome’s currently open tabs. It does not search your browsing history and cannot resurrect a tab that has already been closed. The Recent Tabs or closed-tab route presents recently closed items; on some platforms it can also show tabs associated with other signed-in devices.

Google’s official Chrome Help pages document Tab search, its desktop shortcuts, the @tabs entry point, desktop closed-tab recovery and iPhone/iPad open-tab search. Descriptions of a mobile Recent Tabs menu come from Google Chrome Community guidance by a volunteer Product Expert, so treat that menu as platform-dependent rather than a universal Chrome promise.
What Chrome Tab search does
Tab search is an index of the tabs currently open in Chrome. It is useful when a window contains many tabs and you remember the site, page title or another keyword but not where the tab is positioned. Choosing a result takes you to that existing tab instead of opening a duplicate page.

Desktop tab search
On desktop Chrome, the Tab search control is pinned in the tab strip by default and Google says the feature is on by default. Open it and type words associated with the page or site. Chrome lists matching open tabs; select one to switch to it. A close control in the results lets you close a matching tab without first navigating to it.
Because the search is limited to open tabs, a result represents a live tab in one of your open Chrome windows. If you searched for a page that was closed earlier, Tab search will not display it merely because it appears in your history or because Chrome could reopen it.
Desktop keyboard and address-bar routes
- Windows or Linux: press
Ctrl+Shift+Ato open Tab search. - Mac: press
Command+Shift+A. - Address bar: type
@tabs, then press Tab or Space to begin an open-tab search. Enter keywords and choose a result.
The address-bar method is useful when your hands are already on the keyboard or when you do not want to locate the Tab search button in a crowded tab strip. All three methods query the same category of data: tabs that remain open.
Search terms that work best
Use a distinctive word from the site name, page title or topic. For example, searching for calendar can reveal an open calendar tab, while a unique project name is more likely to produce one result than a generic word such as home. If several tabs match, read the displayed titles and domains before selecting one. Tab search is a locator, not a second browsing-history database.
What Tab search does not do
- It does not list pages you visited yesterday but have since closed.
- It does not turn a history entry into an open tab.
- It does not replace the restore shortcut for an accidental close.
- It does not necessarily tell you which device previously displayed a page; it searches the open tabs available to that Chrome installation.
Those boundaries explain many “missing tab” reports. A page can be present in History and absent from Tab search because the tab is no longer open. Conversely, a result in Tab search is already open, so opening it from the result returns to the existing tab rather than creating another copy.
What the Recent Tabs menu and closed-tab recovery do
Recent Tabs is not one identical menu on every Chrome platform. Its label, location and contents can change with the device and Chrome version. In mobile guidance from the Google Chrome Community, the menu is described as containing recently closed entries and, in some contexts, tabs associated with other signed-in devices. That explanation is useful for understanding why a mobile list may contain more than one category, but it is not formal, universal product documentation.
On desktop, Google’s documented way to recover an accidentally closed tab or window is the restore shortcut:

Ctrl+Shift+Ton Windows and Linux.Command+Shift+Ton Mac.
Use the command after closing a tab or window and Chrome brings back the closed item. This is a recovery action, not a search action: you are asking Chrome to reopen a recently closed item rather than locate an item that is already open.
Restoring more than one closed item
If the first restored item is not the page you wanted, press the same shortcut again. Chrome can move backward through the available recently closed tabs and windows. Work slowly when restoring several items so you can identify each title and avoid reopening an unwanted window. The shortcut is intended for recent recovery, not as a complete catalog of every page ever visited; older visits may require History.
Why the label can be confusing
“Recent Tabs” may sound as though it means every tab you opened recently. In practice, a platform-specific menu can combine recently closed entries with device-related entries, while open tabs are handled by Tab search or the Tab Switcher. Do not assume that every Chrome installation exposes the same heading or the same list.
If you need a broader record of pages you visited, open Chrome’s History instead. History is a separate concept from both an open-tab index and a recently closed-tab list. It may contain visits that are no longer represented as open tabs or recoverable recent entries.

How to find an open tab on a computer
- Open Tab search. Select the Tab search control in the tab strip, press
Ctrl+Shift+Aon Windows/Linux, pressCommand+Shift+Aon Mac, or type@tabsin the address bar and press Tab or Space. - Enter a keyword. Use a site name, page title or distinctive term from the page.
- Inspect the matches. The results represent tabs that are currently open. Check the title and domain when several entries look similar.
- Switch to the tab. Select the result; Chrome takes you to the existing tab rather than creating a new copy.
- Close a tab if needed. Use the close control shown with the result to remove that open tab.
If no result appears, first try a shorter or more distinctive term. If the page was closed, stop refining the Tab search: use the closed-tab recovery route or History instead.
How to search open tabs on iPhone or iPad
Chrome for iPhone and iPad puts open-tab search inside the Tab Switcher. This is the mobile equivalent of searching tabs that are still open, not a way to retrieve a closed page.
- Open Chrome’s Tab Switcher by tapping Switch tabs.
- Tap Search.
- Enter keywords related to the site or page.
- Tap the matching open tab to return to it.
When the result is missing, consider whether the tab was closed or whether the wording you entered differs from the page title. For a closed item, look for the platform’s recent/closed-tab option rather than repeatedly searching the open-tab list.

How to recover a recently closed desktop tab or window
- Stay in Chrome after the accidental close.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Ton Windows or Linux, orCommand+Shift+Ton Mac. - Check the restored tab or window. If the item you wanted is not the one restored, use the command again to move through the available recently closed items.
Google documents this shortcut for restoring a closed tab and for restoring a closed window. It is therefore the fastest first response to an accidental close on desktop. It does not search all historical visits; it targets Chrome’s recent closed-item recovery path.
How to interpret Recent Tabs on mobile
Because mobile Chrome versions and platforms do not expose one fixed Recent Tabs interface, use the following approach:
- Open the menu or tab-management view that your version labels Recent Tabs or a similar term.
- Read the category or device label attached to each entry, if one is shown.
- Choose a recently closed item when you want to reopen something closed on that device.
- If an entry refers to another device, confirm that it is the page you intend to open before selecting it.
- If the page is not listed, switch to History for a wider record of past visits.
The exact labels and placement can change. A guide that claims every phone has the same Recent Tabs list is overstating what Chrome documents. The dependable distinction is functional: open-tab search finds live tabs, while a recent/closed view is for reopening past entries and may have additional device-related items.
A practical troubleshooting flow
Start with the last state you can confirm rather than with the menu name. If you can see the page in another Chrome window, use Tab search and select the matching result. If you just watched the tab or window disappear on a computer, use the restore shortcut immediately. If neither route finds it, check History; the visit may be older than the recoverable recent list or may have been closed before you began looking.
When several results look alike, compare the displayed page title and domain. Selecting the wrong result still takes you to an open tab, so you can return to Tab search and choose another without creating duplicates. If a mobile list shows a device name, verify that label before opening the entry. An absent device entry is not proof that synchronization failed everywhere; it only means that the current view does not show that item.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Searching for a closed page with Tab search
A missing result is not necessarily a search failure. Tab search only knows about open tabs. Once you establish that the tab was closed, use the desktop restore shortcut or the relevant mobile recent/closed view.
Treating Recent Tabs as a universal Chrome feature name
Chrome’s interface differs across desktop, Android and iOS, and it can change between versions. Describe the function rather than relying on one menu label: look for recently closed items, device-associated tabs or the platform’s tab-management menu.

Confusing an open duplicate with the original tab
If you click a normal search result or type the page address manually, Chrome may create another tab. Tab search is preferable when the goal is to return to an existing tab because selecting its result switches to that tab.
Using History when a shortcut is faster
For a just-closed desktop tab or window, try the documented keyboard command before searching History. History is valuable when the visit is older or no longer appears in the recent recovery list, but it is a broader record and may require more searching.
Assuming a mobile list guarantees synchronization
A community explanation says some Recent Tabs views can include tabs from other signed-in devices, but this should not be treated as a guarantee for every account, platform or version. The list you see is the authority for your current installation; if an expected device entry is absent, use the device’s own open-tab search or History.
Expecting identical controls on every screen
The desktop tab-strip button, desktop address-bar command and iPhone/iPad Tab Switcher search are separate entry points to the same basic open-tab task. Their wording and placement are not required to match. Follow the platform-specific route instead of assuming that a control shown in a desktop guide must also appear on a phone.

- Still open somewhere in Chrome? Use Tab search on desktop or Tab Switcher → Search on iPhone/iPad.
- Closed moments ago on a computer? Press

- Not listed anywhere? Open History and search the visit record.
- Want to remove an open result? Close it from Tab search instead of opening it first.
What can change between Chrome versions?
Chrome’s controls and labels are periodically redesigned. The official help pages establish the desktop Tab search shortcuts, the address-bar @tabs flow, desktop closed-tab recovery and iOS open-tab search, but they do not define one permanent Recent Tabs menu for every platform. A button that is pinned in one release may be moved or represented differently in another.
When instructions and your screen disagree, identify the task first. For an open tab, look for Tab search in the tab strip, the Tab Switcher search on iPhone or iPad, or the @tabs address-bar command on desktop. For a closed desktop tab or window, use the restore shortcut. For a mobile recent list, follow the labels shown by your version and treat device entries as platform-specific.

Tab search and Recent Tabs solve opposite halves of the “where did my page go?” problem. Tab search locates an open tab and can close it from the results. Recent/closed-tab recovery reopens something that was closed, while some mobile implementations may also show tabs connected with other devices. Start by deciding whether the tab is open; that single distinction tells you which tool to use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chrome Tab search find closed tabs?
No. Tab search lists tabs that are open now. Use Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, Command+Shift+T on Mac, a platform-specific recent/closed view, or History for an older visit.

On desktop, press Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+T on Mac. Press the shortcut again to move through additional recently closed tabs or windows.
Can Tab search close a tab?
Yes. Open Tab search, find the matching result, and use its close control. You can close the tab without switching to it first.
Is Recent Tabs the same on Android, iPhone and desktop?
No single permanent menu is documented for every platform. Labels, placement and contents can vary by device and Chrome version; some mobile views may also show tabs from other signed-in devices.
How do I search open tabs on an iPhone or iPad?
Tap Switch tabs to open the Tab Switcher, tap Search, enter keywords, and select the matching open tab.
What should I use if the page is not in Tab search or Recent Tabs?
