What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a Chromebook screen: press Ctrl + Show windows for the entire screen, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows and drag to select an area. To capture a complete, scrolling webpage in desktop Chrome, open DevTools and choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot. These are different jobs: the Chromebook shortcuts capture pixels on your screen, while DevTools can render content below the fold.
Choose the capture you actually need
A “Chrome screenshot” can mean several outputs. Decide the scope before pressing a key:
| Goal | Best built-in method | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Everything visible on a Chromebook display | Ctrl + Show windows | The full screen, including browser chrome and other visible windows |
| A rectangle on a Chromebook | Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then drag | Only the selected screen region |
| A Chromebook window, region, or full screen | Ctrl + Shift + Show windows to open Screen capture | Choose full-screen, partial, or window mode in the toolbar |
| The visible webpage viewport in desktop Chrome | DevTools > More options > Capture screenshot | The rendered area currently inside the viewport |
| The complete webpage, including below the fold | DevTools > More options > Capture a full size screenshot | The full rendered page, not just what is currently visible |
If you need a page without browser tabs, bookmarks, or the desktop around it, use the DevTools methods rather than an operating-system screen shortcut.
Chromebook screenshot shortcuts
Capture the entire screen
- Display the content you want to preserve.
- Press Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the Chromebook key with a rectangle and two vertical lines.
- ChromeOS saves the image and normally shows a notification with a preview and file location.
This captures the complete visible display. It does not scroll a webpage or create a tall image of content below the current viewport.

Capture a selected region
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
- When the selection cursor appears, press and hold the mouse or trackpad button.
- Drag around the area to keep, then release.
- Use the preview notification to open, copy, or edit the result.
Use this for a paragraph, image, dialog, or part of a page when capturing the whole display would expose unrelated information.
Use the Screen capture toolbar
Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows to open the ChromeOS Screen capture controls. Select a full-screen, partial, or window capture mode, then follow the on-screen selection steps. The toolbar is useful when you want to switch modes without memorizing separate workflows or when you need window capture specifically.
On an external keyboard that has no Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as an alternative for opening the additional screenshot features. Keyboard layouts and vendor remappings can differ, so the toolbar is the safest fallback when a shortcut appears to do nothing.
Capture a full webpage in desktop Chrome
Desktop Chrome’s built-in route for a scrolling webpage is DevTools. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and other desktop systems where Chrome DevTools is available.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Open DevTools
- Navigate to the page you want to capture.
- Open DevTools with your usual method: right-click the page and choose Inspect, or use Chrome’s developer-tools keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
- If DevTools is docked at the side or bottom, that does not prevent a full-size capture; Chrome captures the page being inspected.
Capture only the current viewport
- In DevTools, open the More options menu (the three-dot menu in the DevTools toolbar).
- Choose Capture screenshot.
- Chrome saves an image of the webpage area currently represented by the viewport.
This is the right choice for a hero section, a bug report showing the current state, or any image that should match what a visitor sees without scrolling.

Capture the complete rendered page
- Open DevTools and its More options menu.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
- Wait for Chrome to render and assemble the page, then check the downloaded image.
The result includes content that is not currently visible in the viewport. Chrome’s documentation describes this command as capturing “the whole page including the content that isn’t currently visible in the viewport.” The output is based on the page as rendered at capture time, so responsive breakpoints, logged-in state, animations, and late-loading content can change the image.
Make a full-page capture accurate
Set the viewport deliberately
Responsive pages can produce a different layout at every width. Resize the browser or use DevTools’ device emulation before capturing if you need a repeatable mobile, tablet, or desktop composition. Record the viewport width when the screenshot is evidence for a bug or design review.
Wait for dynamic content
Let fonts, images, charts, and client-rendered sections finish loading. Scroll through the page once if it uses lazy loading, then return to the top and run the full-size command. A full-page screenshot is not a guarantee that an application has finished its own asynchronous work.
Control transient UI
Dismiss cookie dialogs, newsletter prompts, chat bubbles, and open menus before capture when they are not part of the subject. Conversely, leave a consent dialog open when the screenshot is intended to document that user experience. A screen shortcut will faithfully include whatever is visible; DevTools will capture the rendered page state you prepared.
Check sticky elements and animations
Fixed headers, sticky banners, carousels, blinking carets, and video frames can appear at an unexpected position in a tall image. Pause or close animation where possible and take a second capture if the first output shows overlap. For a design handoff, annotate the intended viewport separately instead of assuming a full-page image explains every responsive behavior.
Where screenshots go and how to verify them
ChromeOS and desktop Chrome normally download screenshots to the browser’s configured download folder. Open the download shelf or the Downloads page to see the exact path; a managed device may redirect files to an organization-controlled location. Rename the file immediately if you are collecting several viewport variants, and open it at 100% zoom to check clipped text, missing images, and unexpected blank sections.

Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
- Confirm that you are pressing the Chromebook’s Show windows key, not a generic window-management key.
- Try Ctrl + Shift + Show windows and use the toolbar instead.
- On an external keyboard, try the documented Ctrl + Shift + F5 alternative.
- Check whether an accessibility utility, keyboard remapper, remote-desktop client, or administrator policy has claimed the combination.
The image shows only what was visible
That is expected from Ctrl + Show windows, a partial selection, or DevTools’ Capture screenshot. For content below the fold, use Capture a full size screenshot in DevTools.
The full-page image is cut off or has blank sections
- Wait for network activity, fonts, and lazy images to finish.
- Reload without immediately capturing, then allow client-side components to render.
- Scroll through the page once to trigger lazy loading.
- Disable an extension that injects banners or scripts and retry in an Incognito window if policy permits.
- If the page requires authentication, verify that the correct account and permissions remain active in the inspected tab.
A cookie banner or chat widget blocks the content
Close the overlay before capture, or select only the underlying region with the Chromebook partial shortcut. If the banner is the subject of the screenshot, keep it open and note the page state.
The page changes between captures
Live feeds, rotating advertisements, personalized recommendations, experiments, and time-zone-sensitive content are not stable. Save the URL, viewport, account state, and capture time with the image so another person can reproduce the conditions.
The download is too large to share
Use an image editor to crop or resize a copy rather than degrading the original. For documentation, a viewport capture is often more readable than a very tall full-page image. If a PDF is the actual deliverable, use a PDF-specific workflow instead of stitching screenshots.
When browser shortcuts are the wrong tool
Manual shortcuts are ideal for an occasional, human-reviewed capture. They become cumbersome when you need a scheduled archive, many URLs, consistent device sizes, authenticated headers, or a clean result without consent and chat overlays. An automation service can also report whether a request produced a usable page instead of leaving you to inspect every file.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Here is a runnable cURL request (the ScreenshotNeo documentation lists the parameters and response details):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Replace the example URL and API key. ScreenshotNeo supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and margins, landscape mode and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, up to 100 URLs per bulk call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and familiar parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.
An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every feature is available on every plan: 1,000 shots per month free with no card, then Starter is $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start with 1,000 screenshots a month and no card.
Reliability, privacy, and cost considerations
- Repeatability: Fix the URL, viewport or device preset, user agent, timezone, cookies, and wait condition when comparing releases.
- Performance: Full-page rendering and lazy-image loading take longer than a viewport shot. A selector capture or cached result can reduce unnecessary work.
- Failure handling: Inspect HTTP status and the
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders instead of treating every downloaded file as valid. - Access control: Keep API keys server-side. Use custom headers or cookies only when you are authorized to access the page.
- Cost control: Cache stable pages with a TTL, use bulk capture for batches, and capture a selector instead of a full page when that is all you need.
FAQ
Will a Chromebook shortcut capture browser tabs and bookmarks?
Yes, if those controls are visible in the selected screen area. A DevTools webpage capture is the cleaner choice when browser chrome must be excluded.
Can a full-size DevTools screenshot prove what every visitor sees?
No. It represents one rendered state. Responsive breakpoints, login state, experiments, personalization, timing, and animations can produce different results for other visitors.

The Bottom Line
Use Ctrl + Show windows or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows for Chromebook screen captures. For a scrolling webpage on desktop Chrome, DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot is the built-in answer; use ScreenshotNeo when repeatable, automated, cleaned captures are more important than a manual shortcut.
