To find out whether a browser is the problem, check whether the whole computer slows down, watch CPU and memory use, and compare browsers on the same laptop with the same tabs and extensions.
What a browser switch can tell you
A browser is one possible source of heavy CPU or memory use, and reducing that load may make a computer feel more responsive. Mozilla notes that when system resources are heavily used, overall computer performance and stability can suffer. But freezing can also involve the operating system, extensions, a particular site, a long-running session, or hardware limits; a change in symptoms after switching does not identify the cause by itself. Mozilla Support’s resource troubleshooting guide, updated March 30, 2026, recommends checking resource use rather than assuming the browser is solely responsible.

How to check whether Chrome is the bottleneck
- Notice what freezes. If only the browser becomes unresponsive, focus first on its tabs, extensions, and session. If the desktop and other applications also stall, investigate system-wide resource pressure or operating-system issues.
- Check CPU and memory while the problem happens. Use your operating system’s built-in monitoring tools and look for whether CPU or memory use is near its limit. Record which apps and browser tabs are active; a single observation may not explain an intermittent freeze.
- Reduce the workload for a useful comparison. Close unused tabs, disable extensions you do not need, and restart the browser periodically. If the whole computer is affected, restart it too; Mozilla identifies restarting the browser or computer as troubleshooting steps.
- Compare browsers under the same conditions. Use the same sites, tab count, and extensions where possible, then see whether the same symptom returns. A different workload or a clean browser profile can make a comparison misleading.
- Check for pending operating-system updates. If freezing continues across browsers or applications, do not treat a browser change as a complete diagnosis; system software or hardware may be involved.
Is an open-source browser a sensible alternative?
Brave is one possible example, not a confirmed identity for the browser in the headline. Brave’s support documentation says its desktop browser is built on Chromium, an open-source project. That means “open source” does not necessarily mean a completely different underlying browser engine from Chrome.
Brave also documents a Memory Saver feature that deactivates tabs not currently in use to help active tabs run smoothly. On desktop, its settings path is Menu → Settings → System → Performance. Tab suspension may help when many open tabs contribute to pressure, but it is not a guarantee of smoother performance on every laptop or site. Check compatibility, but don’t confuse it with speed
Before installing a browser, confirm that its current system requirements include your operating system and processor. Brave lists Windows 10 or later with an ARM64 or 64-bit Intel/AMD CPU supporting SS3, macOS Ventura 13 or later, and supported 64-bit Linux distributions. Requirements can change; check Brave’s current requirements information before installing. Meeting a minimum requirement means the software is compatible, not that it will run smoothly on a particular older machine.
What Brave’s memory figure does—and doesn’t—show
Brave reports that its browser uses 28% less memory on average than Chrome, Edge, and Firefox in a benchmark it published in 2026. This is a vendor-reported comparison, not an independent test or a prediction for a specific laptop. Results for an individual machine can differ with its browser version, operating system, tabs, sites, and extensions. Treat the figure as a reason to test Brave on your own workload, not proof that it will stop freezing. Brave’s benchmark post provides the company’s claim.

When adding RAM is worth investigating
If system memory stays near its maximum during ordinary use, more RAM may help, as Mozilla suggests. First identify the laptop’s exact model and check whether its memory is upgradeable, along with the supported memory type and capacity. Some laptops do not allow upgrades, and the headline’s improvement does not establish that its machine needed more memory. If memory is not near its limit, buying RAM may not address the cause.
