Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Chrome Headless directly for a simple screenshot of a known URL and viewport. Use Selenium when the capture depends on actions such as logging in, clicking through the app, or capturing several states. These are not mutually exclusive: Selenium can launch Chrome in headless mode, so you can combine Chrome’s invisible browser with Selenium’s interaction and test automation.
How the two approaches differ
Chrome Headless is Chrome running without a visible user interface. Its command-line options can open a URL and save a screenshot. Selenium WebDriver is an automation framework: code in a programming language sends browser commands through a driver such as ChromeDriver.
That makes this a choice between a direct browser command and a browser-automation workflow—not between two screenshot engines. Selenium can drive headless Chrome. The better fit depends on what must happen before the image is captured.
| Decision | Direct Chrome Headless | Selenium driving Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | A one-off or simple scripted capture when the URL, viewport, and wait are known. | A capture that needs login, clicks, state changes, multiple steps, assertions, or integration with an existing test suite. |
| How you capture | Chrome’s --screenshot command-line flag saves an image. |
Configure Chrome with ChromeOptions and ChromeDriver, then use Selenium browser screenshot APIs. |
| Setup to manage | Chrome binary path, flags, viewport, and page wait behavior. | Selenium, ChromeDriver, Chrome options, and compatible browser/driver versions. |
| Browser scope | This command-line method is specific to Chrome. | Selenium supports multiple browser implementations; the Chrome-specific workflow here uses Chrome and ChromeDriver. |
This is a capability-based comparison, not a timing or image-fidelity benchmark. Neither approach is guaranteed to be faster or to produce identical pixels in every environment.

Capture a basic screenshot with Chrome Headless
Chrome’s documented command-line flow can set a viewport, save a screenshot, and delay capture. In a shell where the Chrome executable is available as chrome, run:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 --timeout=3000 https://example.com
Chrome writes screenshot.png to the current working directory. The viewport in this example is 1280 by 900 pixels. The 3,000-millisecond timeout is illustrative, not a recommended universal wait: increase or replace it based on how the target app becomes ready.

What the flags do
--headlessruns Chrome without a visible UI. Current Chrome documentation uses this as the ordinary Headless mode.--screenshotsaves a screenshot asscreenshot.pngin the working directory.--window-size=1280,900sets the viewport dimensions. Substitute the dimensions you need.--timeout=3000delays capture by the specified number of milliseconds.--virtual-time-budgetadvances time-dependent code while allowing it to execute faster than real time. It is a timing aid, not confirmation that network activity or app rendering has finished.
Check the Chrome binary path and the process’s working directory in your target environment. For a complex app, prefer a condition tied to the app’s actual ready state over assuming a fixed delay is sufficient.
Use Selenium when the app must be operated first
Choose Selenium when the screenshot is the result of a browser journey: for example, signing in, opening a particular view, clicking a control, or checking more than one state. Selenium is also a natural fit when screenshot capture belongs inside an existing automated test. These recommendations follow from the documented roles of command-line Chrome and WebDriver automation.

Selenium’s Chrome documentation describes Selenium 4 as compatible with Chrome v75 and greater and says Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. Because browser and driver compatibility can change with versions, verify the guidance for the exact versions you pin. Selenium’s page lists --headless=new among common Chrome arguments, while current Chrome documentation presents --headless as the general modern mode. Prefer the current Chrome guidance and check flags against your pinned browser release.
Keep CI captures reproducible
For a repeatable CI workflow, Chrome for Testing provides versioned Chrome binaries and matching ChromeDriver binaries. Chrome describes ChromeDriver as the bridge between WebDriver test frameworks and Chrome. Pin the browser and driver pair, then update them deliberately; an untracked browser update can change rendering or break compatibility.

For meaningful comparisons between your own captures, hold the Chrome build, operating system, fonts, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, color scheme, page state, and readiness condition constant. There is no universal speed or pixel-equivalence result established for these approaches.

Selenium’s documentation describes WebDriver BiDi as a W3C bidirectional protocol for browser automation that streams browser events over WebSockets. It characterizes Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) support as temporary during BiDi implementation. These details may matter if your automation depends on event-driven control or Chrome-specific protocol hooks; they are not prerequisites for a basic screenshot.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected captures
- Chrome cannot be launched: Confirm the Chrome executable is installed and available under the command name or explicit path used by your environment.
- The screenshot is in the wrong place: Chrome saves
screenshot.pngin the process’s current working directory. Check that directory and the permissions available to the process. - The screenshot shows a loading state or incomplete content: A fixed timeout may be too short, or the page may rely on lazy loading, fonts, network activity, or app-specific initialization. Increase the delay only as a diagnostic; use a readiness condition for complex pages.
- Selenium cannot control Chrome: Check that Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions match, and use a deliberately pinned pair in CI.
- A headless flag is rejected or behaves differently: Verify the flag against the exact Chrome version. Current Chrome’s general mode is
--headless; older advice to use--headless=oldis historical. - Two captures differ: Compare the browser build, operating system, fonts, viewport, scale factor, color scheme, and page readiness before attributing the difference to the capture method.
Or skip the browser setup:
If you need a screenshot endpoint rather than maintaining Chrome and driver setup, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request can return an image or PDF; the example below saves a WebP image.
