Chrome error code 5 is not a single diagnosis. In a crashed-tab message, Chromium documents code 5 as an overlap between SIGTRAP and RESULT_CODE_INVALID_CMDLINE_URL. The same number has also appeared in a macOS updater message as an opaque “5 (0)” code. Treat the number as a clue about the failure path, not proof that your computer has defective RAM, a bad extension, or a particular security product.
The fastest reliable approach is to identify the scope first, then restart and update Chrome and your operating system, isolate extensions and profile state, test security software carefully, and involve an administrator if an enterprise proxy is intercepting HTTPS traffic.

What Chrome error code 5 means
Chrome displays an error when it cannot connect to a website, load a page, or interact with web content normally. “Error code 5” can therefore appear in more than one internal context. Chromium’s SadTab source comment says that code 5 conflicts between SIGTRAP and RESULT_CODE_INVALID_CMDLINE_URL. Those are different internal conditions, so the number alone cannot identify one root cause.

Chromium has also recorded a macOS updater message that previously showed an opaque “5 (0)” code. That updater message is not the same event as an “Aw, Snap!” crashed tab. If you see the number while Chrome is updating rather than while a page is crashing, record that distinction when troubleshooting.

Why one website can fail while others work
Chromium issue reports describe code 5 in situations where particular pages or rendering workloads repeatedly crash Chrome or Edge. Other reports involve Apple M1 Macs. These reports do not establish a universal defect or a frequency rate; they show that a page’s content, graphics workload, browser build, operating system, and hardware combination can interact in a way that crashes one tab.
If every unrelated site fails, the problem is more likely to involve Chrome installation or profile state, an extension, security software, a proxy policy, graphics handling, or the operating system. If one page fails consistently while ordinary sites work, a site-specific workload is plausible and the page owner or browser vendor will need the reproduction details.
Classify the failure before changing settings
Do this short check before uninstalling Chrome, deleting your profile, or disabling protection. It prevents a broad and disruptive fix when the failure is limited to one page.

- Copy the affected page address and record what you were doing when the tab failed: video playback, WebGL or 3D content, file upload, a long-running application, a login flow, or an ordinary article.
- Try the same address in another browser. A success elsewhere does not prove Chrome is defective, but it helps establish whether the workload is browser-specific.
- Open an Incognito window with
Ctrl+Shift+Non Windows or Linux, orCommand+Shift+Non macOS, and test the page there. Incognito normally starts without most extensions, making it a useful isolation test. - Write down your Chrome version, operating-system version, computer model or processor family, and whether the failure began after an update, extension installation, graphics-driver change, or security-policy change.
Use the result as a decision point: one-site failures call for page and rendering isolation, while all-site failures call for browser, profile, security, and system checks.
Fix Chrome error code 5 in evidence-based order
1. Fully restart Chrome
Close every Chrome window, wait a few seconds, and reopen the browser. On Windows or Linux, check the task manager if Chrome remains running after the windows close; on macOS, use Chrome > Quit Google Chrome rather than merely closing a window. A complete restart clears a transient renderer or updater state without changing your data.
2. Update Chrome and the operating system
In Chrome, open Menu (three dots) > Help > About Google Chrome. Let Chrome check for and install an available update, then select Relaunch when prompted. Also install pending operating-system updates: use Settings > Windows Update on Windows, or System Settings > General > Software Update on macOS. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance specifically advises keeping Windows or macOS current when diagnosing connection and loading problems.

3. Isolate extensions
Open chrome://extensions and switch off every extension. Reopen the affected page. If the crash stops, turn extensions on one at a time and retest after each change. The first extension that restores the failure is a suspect, not conclusive proof: two extensions can interact, and the page itself may still be triggering a renderer problem.
Remove an extension only after you have recorded its name and version. If the problem continues with all extensions disabled, restore the original enabled state so you do not leave normal browser functions disabled.
4. Test a clean browser profile
An Incognito test that works can indicate an extension, cookie, cached script, or profile preference. To separate profile state from the Chrome installation, use the profile icon near the address bar and choose Add to create a temporary profile. Do not sign in or import settings during this test. Open only the affected address.
If the page works in the temporary profile, copy your important bookmarks or settings only after identifying the offending extension or site data. If it still crashes in a clean profile, profile corruption is less likely and the page, graphics path, security software, or system environment deserves attention.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Check antivirus HTTPS scanning without weakening protection permanently
Some antivirus products offer HTTPS protection, encrypted-traffic scanning, or a similarly named inspection feature. Google warns that this type of interception can prevent Chrome from providing security and recommends temporarily turning the feature off as a test. The exact control is different in each product, so use its own help documentation.

Disable only the HTTPS-scanning component for the shortest possible test, load the page once, and turn the protection back on immediately. Do not leave antivirus protection disabled, and do not treat a successful test as permission to browse unprotected. If the failure returns when scanning is restored, update the security software and contact its support team for a compatible configuration.
6. Handle managed HTTPS proxies through an administrator
Schools and businesses may route traffic through a proxy that inspects HTTPS connections. A managed proxy can affect page loading or renderer behavior, and the browser may display the same numeric code for a different internal failure. On an organization-managed device or network, contact the administrator with the affected URL, timestamp, Chrome version, and whether the page works on an unmanaged connection.
Do not install certificates, change proxy policies, or bypass inspection yourself unless your organization’s administrator instructs you to do so. Those changes can expose traffic, violate policy, or make the original fault harder to reproduce.
7. Test graphics acceleration only as a controlled diagnostic
The available evidence does not show that code 5 itself proves a graphics-card or hardware-acceleration fault. Nevertheless, if failures occur only on video, 3D, canvas, or other graphics-heavy pages, you can perform a reversible test. Open Menu > Settings > System, turn off Use graphics acceleration when available, select Relaunch, and test the page again.
Record whether the behavior changes, then restore the original setting if there is no improvement. A change in behavior is a useful diagnostic detail for Chrome or graphics-driver support; it is not evidence that the computer needs a new graphics card.
8. Treat RAM as a hypothesis, not a diagnosis
Error code 5 does not report how much memory Chrome used, whether physical RAM is defective, or whether the system ran out of memory. Close unusually heavy applications and check the operating system’s memory monitor while reproducing the problem, but do not buy memory or replace hardware solely because this number appeared. A repeatable failure on one page with normal memory use points toward a page or rendering interaction rather than a simple capacity shortage.

9. Check the page itself
If unrelated sites remain stable, refresh the affected page after the restart and update steps. Test while signed out if the site permits it, and note whether a particular document, video, account, or embedded component triggers the crash. Capture a minimal reproduction: the shortest sequence of clicks that causes the tab to fail, whether it happens in another browser, and whether a temporary Chrome profile changes the result.
What the code can and cannot tell you
| Possible factor | What is established | Best next test |
|---|---|---|
| One page or web application | Chromium reports include crashes tied to particular pages and rendering workloads. | Compare several unrelated sites, then reproduce the same action on the affected page in Incognito and another browser. |
| All pages | The number alone does not identify whether Chrome, the profile, security software, or the operating system is responsible. | Restart, update Chrome and the operating system, disable extensions, and test a temporary profile. |
| Extensions | Extensions can change page behavior, but code 5 does not name a specific extension. | Disable all extensions, then re-enable them one at a time. |
| HTTPS-scanning antivirus | Google warns that HTTPS protection or scanning can interfere with Chrome security and loading. | Temporarily disable only that feature, retest, and immediately restore protection. |
| Enterprise proxy interception | Managed HTTPS interception can alter traffic and is controlled by organizational policy. | Ask the administrator to test the URL and proxy policy; do not install certificates independently. |
| Hardware acceleration | The numeric code is not proof of a GPU fault. | For graphics-heavy pages, temporarily disable graphics acceleration, relaunch, and record the result. |
| Insufficient or defective RAM | No authoritative statistic or diagnostic link connects code 5 to a particular RAM condition. | Check system memory usage while reproducing the crash before considering hardware changes. |
| macOS updater | Chromium previously displayed an opaque “5 (0)” updater message. | Distinguish the updater event from a crashed tab and report the operating-system and Chrome versions. |
When the problem is limited to one site
A one-site failure is the strongest reason not to reset Chrome globally. Keep the page address, browser version, operating-system version, and reproduction steps together. Include whether another browser succeeds, whether Incognito changes the result, and whether graphics acceleration changes it.
Contact the site’s support team when the failure is repeatable on a current Chrome installation but other sites work. Give them the smallest reproducible action and avoid sending passwords, private documents, or session cookies. If the page contains customer data, redact screenshots and URLs before sharing them outside your organization.
When every site crashes
Use the broadest but still reversible checks first: complete restart, Chrome update, operating-system update, extension isolation, temporary profile, and security-software test. If all of those produce the same result, compare a different operating-system user account or another computer only if your support policy allows it. That comparison helps separate a device-wide problem from one user profile, but it is not required before contacting support.
Do not repeatedly delete the Chrome profile as a first response. Profile deletion can remove locally stored settings and data while leaving a proxy, security product, operating-system problem, or page-triggered renderer fault unchanged.
What to send when you escalate
The numeric code is insufficient for a definitive diagnosis. A useful report contains:
- Exact Chrome version from Menu > Help > About Google Chrome.
- Operating-system name and version, plus the computer processor family when relevant, such as an Apple M1-based Mac.
- The complete affected URL, the date and time of the failure, and the action that triggered it.
- Whether unrelated sites crash, whether another browser succeeds, and whether Incognito or a temporary profile changes the behavior.
- Extension changes, graphics-driver changes, Chrome updates, operating-system updates, or policy changes that preceded the issue.
- Whether HTTPS-scanning antivirus or an enterprise proxy is present, without disabling protections permanently.
- Any crash dialog text, including whether it says “Aw, Snap!” or shows “5 (0)” during an update.
These details let support distinguish a page-specific rendering workload from a profile, installation, security, or management issue. They are more valuable than repeating the number alone.
A practical decision path
| Observation | Interpretation to test | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one page crashes; other sites are normal | Page content or a rendering workload may be interacting with Chrome. | Capture the reproduction, test Incognito and another browser, and contact the site or Chrome support with details. |
| Several pages crash only with extensions enabled | An extension or extension interaction is plausible. | Re-enable extensions individually to identify the trigger. |
| Pages work in a temporary profile | The original profile’s settings, site data, or extensions are implicated. | Keep the temporary profile clean while identifying and removing the specific change. |
| Pages change behavior when HTTPS scanning is off | Security software may be intercepting encrypted traffic. | Restore protection, update the security software, and seek vendor support. |
| Failure occurs on a managed network only | A proxy or policy difference is plausible. | Give the administrator the reproduction and ask for a policy-side test. |
| Graphics-heavy pages fail and acceleration changes the result | A graphics path is involved, but the code is not a hardware diagnosis. | Keep the result as a troubleshooting clue and pursue browser or driver support. |
Chrome error code 5 is best understood as a reused, context-dependent marker. Identify whether the event is a crashed tab or an updater message, determine whether the scope is one page or the whole browser, and use reversible isolation tests before making disruptive changes. Keep security protection enabled, let administrators handle managed HTTPS interception, and report the complete reproduction rather than relying on the number by itself.
