These are different layers. A Skill is part of the Gemini in Chrome experience. An extension is a browser add-on. An extension can use AI, but adding an AI model does not turn every extension into a Skill or give all AI extensions the same capabilities, privacy terms or account requirements.

What a Chrome AI Skill is
A saved prompt, not a separate program
A Skill is a prompt you save for reuse in Gemini in Chrome. Instead of rewriting the same instruction every time, you keep it as a named action and run it when needed. Google presents this as a way to save a helpful prompt and apply it with a click on another page.
The Skill itself is therefore the instruction. It does not become a new toolbar, page script or standalone application. Gemini remains the service interpreting the prompt and producing the response.
The active page supplies the context
When you run a Skill, Gemini reads the content of the page you are viewing and applies the saved instructions to that context. The page is the starting material; the prompt defines the operation. This makes Skills useful for repeatable reading and comparison tasks where the source changes but the question stays similar.
For example, Google illustrates Skills for asking for recipe substitutions and for comparing product specifications across tabs. Those examples show the pattern: provide a recurring instruction, then apply it to the pages open in Gemini in Chrome. They do not mean that a Skill is equivalent to an extension that changes how every page behaves.

What a Skill does not establish
- It is not proof that Gemini can access every website, account area or page element in every circumstance.
- It is not a universal automation system for browser controls.
- It does not define an extension’s permissions, data handling or feature set.
- It does not guarantee identical results when pages use different layouts, languages or content formats.
Those boundaries follow from the design: a Skill supplies instructions to Gemini against the page context available at the time you run it.
What a browser extension is

Chrome’s developer documentation describes extensions as separately installed software that can customize the browser and control web content. The extension’s developer decides its user interface, supported workflows and technical behavior. One extension may add a focused feature to a page; another may change browser-level behavior.

Two extensions can have entirely different permissions, data practices, update policies and account requirements. You must evaluate a particular extension’s documentation rather than infer those details from the word extension.
AI is optional
Chrome documents ways developers can add AI functionality to extensions. An AI-enabled extension might therefore summarize, transform or analyze content, but its implementation belongs to that extension’s developer. It may use a different model, provide a different interface or require a separate service account. Chrome’s general AI documentation does not claim that all such extensions share one privacy policy, capability set or eligibility rule.
Why an extension can do more than a prompt in some cases
An extension is software with browser integration, so its feature can be designed around a persistent control, a specialized page interaction or a workflow that is not simply “read this page and answer my instruction.” Whether it actually does those things depends on the individual extension and the permissions it requests. The category alone is not a guarantee of broader power.

How to create and run a Skill
Google’s labels can change as Gemini in Chrome rolls out, but the documented flow has four practical parts.
- Open the page you want to work with in Chrome. The page’s available content becomes the context for the Skill.
- Open Gemini in Chrome. Write the instruction you expect to reuse, such as a consistent format for extracting information or a fixed set of questions to ask about a page.
- Save the helpful prompt as a Skill. Google describes saving a useful prompt so it can be run again rather than rewritten.
- Run it on a later page. Select the saved Skill from the Skills area or invoke it from the Gemini panel. Gemini applies the stored instruction to the page that is active at that moment.
For reliable results, make the prompt operational: state the fields to extract, the order of the answer and any conditions such as “say that a detail is missing instead of guessing.” A Skill repeats the instruction, not your assumptions about every future page.
Example: a recipe-substitution Skill
A suitable saved prompt could ask Gemini to identify the recipe’s required ingredient, suggest substitutions, explain how each substitution changes the method and flag allergens. When run on another recipe page, Gemini applies the same checklist to that page’s content. The value is consistency; the Skill does not install a recipe-management feature into Chrome.
Example: comparing specifications across tabs
Google also gives comparing product specifications across tabs as a Skill example. A prompt can define which fields to compare and how to present differences. The result depends on what the open pages actually state and how clearly those specifications are exposed to Gemini.
How an extension workflow differs
There is no single extension workflow because each developer chooses the interface. In general, the process looks like this:

- Define the browser problem. Decide whether you need a persistent control, a page-specific feature or an AI action.
- Read the extension’s own description and documentation. Confirm what it changes, which pages it can use and whether an account or external service is required.
- Review requested permissions and data practices. The extension’s documentation should explain what access it needs and how content is handled. Do not infer safety or privacy from the fact that an extension uses AI.
- Install and configure it through Chrome’s extension interface. The exact controls, options and supported sites are extension-specific.
- Use the developer’s supplied command, button or workflow. An extension may expose a control in the browser or on a page, but the location and behavior are not standardized across the category.
An AI extension can overlap with a Skill when both summarize or transform a page. The underlying mechanism remains different: the extension is installed software, while the Skill is a saved Gemini prompt.

Availability, rollout and account limits
Skills are not guaranteed to be visible to every Chrome user. Google says Gemini in Chrome is being rolled out gradually and is not available to everyone. Skills are unavailable for managed or Enterprise accounts unless an organization’s administrator enables them. Eligibility can therefore depend on how the account is managed as well as on Google’s rollout.
The available documentation does not establish a complete country-by-country rollout matrix or one universal minimum browser version for Skills. If the Skills control is missing, check Google’s current eligibility guidance and your organization’s administrator rather than assuming the feature is broken.
Extensions have no single equivalent rule. Availability, sign-in requirements and supported platforms are determined by each extension and its developer. A claim about an extension’s access or account needs should come from that extension’s current documentation.

Privacy and security questions to ask
Neither “Skill” nor “AI extension” is a complete privacy rating. The useful questions differ because the mechanisms differ.
For a Skill
- What page content is Gemini using for the response?
- Does the page contain private information that you should not include in an AI request?
- Are you using a personal account or an organization-managed account with additional policies?
- Does the answer clearly distinguish information found on the page from an inference?
For an extension
- Which browser permissions does it request, and are they necessary for the advertised feature?
- Does it process page content locally or send it to an external service?
- What account, subscription or third-party model does it require?
- How can you disable, uninstall or revoke access if the feature is no longer needed?
- What does the developer say about retention, sharing and updates?
Chrome’s extension AI documentation is a developer overview, not a certification of any individual extension. Evaluate the named product’s own policy and permission disclosure before using it with sensitive pages.
Can you use both together?
Yes. They solve different problems and are not mutually exclusive. You might use a Skill to apply a repeatable set of questions to the page currently open in Gemini, while an extension supplies an unrelated browser control or specialized integration. If both tools process the same page, check whether their instructions, permissions and data flows overlap.
Do not install an extension merely to reproduce a short prompt you can already save as a Skill. Conversely, do not expect a Skill to provide a persistent browser control that only an extension is designed to add.

- Check availability. For Skills, account management and Google’s rollout matter. For extensions, the developer’s requirements matter.
- Check data handling. Review what page content each tool can access and where processing occurs.
- Test with non-sensitive content. Verify the output or behavior before using either tool on private or consequential material.
- Keep only what you need. Delete unused Skills and uninstall extensions whose permissions or behavior no longer fit the task.
