Chrome AI Skills are saved, reusable prompts inside Gemini in Chrome. A Skill reads the content of the active tab (and, according to Google’s launch description, can be used with another tab you select), then applies the instructions you saved. It is not a browser extension or a separate device. Google says Skills use the same safeguards as Gemini in Chrome and that certain actions—such as adding a calendar event or sending an email—prompt for confirmation. Google has not published a complete list of every action that requires confirmation, nor has the Skills documentation settled retention, human review, or model-training treatment for consumer accounts.
What Chrome AI Skills are
Skills are a feature built into Gemini in Chrome. They let you save a useful instruction from Gemini chat history and reuse it later instead of retyping the prompt. You can edit a saved Skill, create one yourself, or add and customize ready-made Skills from a library.

To run one, open the Gemini side panel in Chrome and invoke the Skill with the / command or the plus button. The Skill then applies its saved instructions to the page context available to Gemini. This makes a Skill closer to a reusable workflow than to an extension that runs independently in the browser.

What a Skill is not
- It is not separate hardware or a standalone application.
- It is not automatically equivalent to every Gemini in Chrome capability, especially the more agentic auto-browse feature.
- It is not a guarantee that every page element, embedded object, or account action will be available on every run. Google’s Skills Help description says the Skill reads active-tab content, but does not define an exhaustive list of included page elements or content types.
What a Skill can see
The active tab is the documented input
Chrome Help describes a Skill as reading the content on the active tab and applying the saved instructions. In practical terms, the page you are viewing is the starting context: a saved “summarize this article” Skill can interpret the article currently open, while a saved “extract the prices” Skill can work on a page containing those prices.

The documentation does not promise that every visual or technical part of a page is readable. It does not specify, for every run, how it handles images, canvas drawings, video, collapsed sections, iframes, scripts, paywalls, or content that appears only after an interaction. Treat “reads the page” as page-context access, not as a guarantee of pixel-perfect or unrestricted access to everything a browser can render.
Other tabs
Google’s April 14, 2026 launch announcement says users can select other tabs. That means a Skill need not be limited to the tab that happened to be active when you opened the side panel; the user can choose a different tab as the working context. The announcement does not establish that a Skill silently scans every open tab. Select the tab or tabs you intend to use and avoid assuming that background tabs are included.
Signed-in pages and private information
The Skills-specific Help material establishes active-tab reading, but it does not provide a universal rule for every signed-in site. A page can contain account details, private messages, order information, health data, or work material, so consider the visible content sensitive before running a Skill. The fact that Chrome can display information does not by itself tell you whether a particular Skill run will receive every underlying data source behind the page.

Do Skills need permission to use tabs?
There is no published Skills permission matrix that maps every tab operation to a separate browser prompt. The documented behavior is that a Skill reads the active tab, with the launch announcement also describing user selection of other tabs. In other words, tab context is part of how the feature works; it should not be confused with an extension requesting unrestricted access to all browsing activity.
Gemini in Chrome has broader controls for sharing the current tab by default, allowing Gemini to browse for you, precise location, and microphone access. These are Gemini in Chrome settings. The Skills documentation reviewed for this feature does not say that every Skill requires all of those permissions, so do not interpret the settings list as a Skills-specific checklist.
What to check before running a Skill
- Confirm which tab is selected in the Gemini side panel.
- Read the page for personal, financial, medical, customer, or confidential work information.
- Review the Skill’s saved instructions so you know what it is being asked to extract, summarize, or do.
- Check Gemini in Chrome’s tab-sharing, browsing, microphone, and location settings if the task appears to need them; enabling one does not prove that a Skill itself requires it.
Can a Skill take actions for you?
Yes, Skills can be used for workflows that go beyond producing text, but Google describes confirmation for only certain actions rather than publishing an exhaustive action list. The Chrome launch announcement states: “Skills are built on Chrome’s foundation of security and privacy, and they utilize the same safeguards we apply to prompts in Gemini in Chrome.” It continues: “That means a Skills prompt will ask for confirmation before taking certain actions, such as adding an event to your calendar or sending an email.” These are Google’s statements, attributed to Hafsah Ismail, Product Manager, Chrome, in the April 14, 2026 announcement.

Those examples establish that confirmation can appear before consequential actions. They do not establish that every consequential operation always requires a confirmation prompt, or that the two examples cover the complete set of protected actions. Read the proposed result and any confirmation dialog before approving it, particularly when a Skill could communicate externally, change a record, schedule something, or submit information.
A safe approval routine
- Run the Skill with the intended tab selected.
- Inspect the generated draft, extracted values, or proposed action.
- Check recipients, dates, amounts, attachments, and other fields that could cause harm if wrong.
- Approve only when the destination and content are correct. If the result is unclear, cancel and revise the Skill or the page context.
Skills versus Gemini’s auto-browse mode
Auto-browse is a separate, more agentic Gemini in Chrome capability. Chrome’s auto-browse Help documentation says it can access local browsing state, including sites where you are signed in, and may share personal information with websites while completing tasks. It also describes confirmations for certain actions and a “Take over task” handoff for some tasks.
Do not automatically assign those properties to an ordinary saved Skill. The two features can both appear in Gemini in Chrome, but they differ in how the task starts and how broadly it operates.

Are Chrome AI Skills private?
Google presents Skills as using the same safeguards applied to prompts in Gemini in Chrome. That is a description of the protection framework, not a published promise that Skills are entirely local, anonymous, or risk-free. A Skill may process the page context you provide to Gemini, so privacy depends on what is on the selected page and which Gemini settings are enabled.
What the published Skills material does not answer
The Skills announcement and Help page reviewed for this feature do not specify a Skills-specific retention period. They also do not say whether Skills interactions receive human review or whether Skills prompts and page content are used to train models for consumer accounts.
Do not substitute enterprise or Workspace privacy terms for an answer about a personal Google Account. Managed-account policies can differ. For your account, consult the current applicable Gemini privacy notice and the controls shown in Gemini in Chrome. If a policy is not stated there, treat it as unspecified rather than assuming that data is deleted immediately, never reviewed, or excluded from training.

Privacy decisions you can make now
- Use a separate, non-sensitive tab when testing a new Skill.
- Remove unnecessary personal details from a page before invoking the Skill, where the site allows it.
- Keep the selected-tab context narrow instead of opening unrelated confidential material.
- Do not approve an external action until you have checked the exact information that will be sent or changed.
- Review Gemini in Chrome’s current account and permission controls periodically because labels and rollout behavior can change.
How to use a Skill in Chrome
- Open the latest Chrome on a supported computer and sign in with a personal Google Account.
- Open Gemini in Chrome from the side panel.
- Choose a Skill from your saved list or library, or create one from a prompt you have already used.
- Edit the instructions so the output, format, and limits are explicit. For example, specify whether you want a short summary, a table, or quoted evidence from the page.
- Open the page you want analyzed, or select the intended tab when Chrome offers tab selection.
- Invoke the Skill with
/or the plus button. - Review the result and any requested confirmation before accepting an action.
Writing a safer, more reliable Skill
State the task, the source boundary, and the output format in the saved instruction. “Summarize the selected article in five bullet points and identify claims that need verification; do not follow links or submit forms” gives a clearer boundary than “handle this page.” If a Skill could produce an email, calendar event, or other external action, tell it to draft first and wait for your approval.
Eligibility and rollout requirements
Chrome Help lists these requirements for Skills:
- A Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer.
- The latest Chrome.
- Gemini in Chrome enabled.
- A personal Google Account.
- Chrome set to English (United States).
- Age 13 or the applicable minimum age in your location.
- A supported region.
Skills are rolling out gradually. Managed or enterprise accounts do not have the feature unless an administrator enables it. During the rollout, Chrome Help suggests checking Chrome version 147 or later. If Skills are missing, the same guidance suggests enabling the Skills flag at chrome://flags, relaunching Chrome, and checking the Gemini side panel. Flags and eligibility can change, so verify the current Help instructions before changing a setting, especially on a work-managed computer.
When Skills do not appear or behave as expected
No Skills option in Gemini
- Confirm that you are using a personal account, not a managed account whose administrator has disabled the feature.
- Update Chrome and check the version requirement shown in the current Chrome Help page.
- Verify that Chrome’s language, age, and region meet the listed eligibility rules.
- Check whether Gemini in Chrome is enabled and available for the account.
- Remember that a gradual rollout can delay access even when the device meets the technical requirements.
The Skill gives an incomplete answer
Make sure the intended page is active or explicitly selected. Some content types may not be included, and the Skills documentation does not define universal support for every dynamic or embedded element. Rewrite the Skill to name the desired fields and output format, then test it on a less sensitive page before using it for important work.

A Skill may require your confirmation, may lack the necessary Gemini setting, or may not support the requested operation. Check the proposed action and any dialog in the side panel. Do not infer from one successful or failed run that every Skill has the same action permissions; Google has not published a complete action matrix.
What you can safely conclude
Chrome AI Skills are reusable prompts that operate inside Gemini in Chrome. Their documented page context is the active tab, with user-selected tabs also described in Google’s launch announcement. Google says certain actions require confirmation, but it has not published an exhaustive list. Gemini’s broader location, microphone, tab-sharing, and auto-browse controls should be treated as separate settings, not automatic requirements for every Skill. Finally, the available Skills documentation does not settle consumer retention, human-review, or model-training questions; use current account-specific privacy information rather than filling those gaps with assumptions.
