AVIF

Choosing the Right Web Image Format: JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: use JPEG for widely compatible photographs, PNG for lossless graphics and transparency, WebP for a practical blend of compression and browser support, and AVIF when the smallest files and modern features matter more than legacy coverage. In production, serve AVIF or WebP first and keep a JPEG or PNG fallback with <picture>.

JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF at a glance

Format Compression Best for Transparency Animation Progressive rendering Compatibility and fallback
JPEG Lossy Photographs and continuous-tone images No alpha channel No Supported by common progressive JPEG encoders Very broad; dependable fallback
PNG Lossless Screenshots, diagrams, logos, text and line art Full alpha transparency No Not a progressive experience in the same way as progressive JPEG Very broad; compatibility-safe lossless fallback
WebP Lossy or lossless Photos, graphics, transparent images and animation Yes Yes Depends on the encoded image and decoder Supported by current Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge; retain a fallback for older or unusual clients
AVIF Lossy or lossless Bandwidth-sensitive images, HDR and wide-color content Yes Yes No progressive rendering Modern support, but less historical depth; provide WebP, JPEG or PNG fallback

No format wins every comparison. File size depends on the source image, encoder, quality setting, chroma subsampling and metadata, so measure the encoded files you actually publish.

When JPEG is the right choice

JPEG remains the safest default for a still photograph when you need broad client compatibility and do not need transparent pixels. Its lossy compression removes information that is usually hard to notice in natural scenes, making it efficient for hero photos, articles and product photography.

Use JPEG when

  • The image is photographic or otherwise continuous-tone.
  • You need a fallback that works across old browsers, mail clients and image tools.
  • The image has no transparent areas.
  • A progressively encoded fallback can improve perceived loading on a slow connection.

Do not use JPEG when

  • Text, one-pixel lines or sharp UI edges must remain exact; ringing and block artifacts become conspicuous.
  • You need an alpha channel. JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels become a flat background.
  • The source will be edited repeatedly; each lossy re-encode can compound artifacts.

When PNG is better than JPEG

PNG uses lossless compression and supports full alpha transparency. Choose it when every pixel matters: screenshots, diagrams, logos, icons, charts, interface captures and line art. Flat colors and hard edges often survive PNG much better than JPEG.

PNG trade-offs

Losslessness does not mean the smallest file. A large photographic PNG can be dramatically heavier than a visually equivalent JPEG, WebP or AVIF. PNG is therefore a fidelity and compatibility choice, not an automatic performance choice. For a transparent logo or screenshot, encode a WebP-lossless or AVIF-lossless variant and compare it with PNG; keep PNG where client coverage or tooling requires it.

Why WebP is the practical middle ground

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation. Google describes it as offering superior lossy and lossless compression for web images. MDN reports typical lossy WebP files are 25–35% smaller than visually similar JPEG images, while lossless WebP files are typically 26% smaller than equivalent PNG images. Those are documented typical comparisons, not guarantees for every asset.

Choose WebP for

  • Photographs where you want smaller files than JPEG without moving immediately to AVIF.
  • Transparent graphics that would otherwise require PNG.
  • Animated images where an animated WebP is appropriate.
  • A single modern format with broad current-browser coverage.

Current Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge support WebP, as do many tools and libraries. If your audience includes older embedded browsers, unusual clients or software with limited decoders, retain a JPEG or PNG fallback.

When AVIF is worth the extra format

AVIF stores AV1 image data in the HEIF container and supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha, animation, HDR and wide color gamut. For visually similar quality, MDN reports lossy AVIF images are around 50% smaller than JPEG images and generally compress better than WebP. The percentage varies with content and encoding settings.

Use AVIF when

  • Bandwidth, mobile transfer size or storage cost is a priority.
  • You publish large photographic images or high-detail artwork.
  • HDR or wide-gamut delivery is important.
  • You can generate and monitor fallbacks.

AVIF limitations to plan for

  • It has less historical browser depth than JPEG, PNG and WebP, so do not ship it as the only source.
  • AVIF does not progressively render. For a critical first-paint image, a progressive-capable fallback may produce a better perceived load.
  • Encoding can be more demanding than older formats; include conversion time in build or upload pipelines and test decoder behavior on target devices.

A reliable production pattern with picture

Use the HTML <picture> element to offer modern formats while leaving a normal <img> fallback:

  <source srcset="hero.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="hero.jpg" alt="Descriptive alternative text" width="1200" height="800">
</picture>

The browser evaluates the <source> entries in order and downloads the first supported option. The <img> element is the fallback and supplies the accessible alternative text. Include intrinsic width and height (or an equivalent aspect-ratio rule) to reserve space and reduce layout shift.

Responsive sources

For different viewport widths, combine srcset and sizes on each source. Generate several widths rather than asking a phone to download a desktop hero:

<picture>
  <source type="image/avif"
    srcset="hero-640.avif 640w, hero-1280.avif 1280w, hero-1920.avif 1920w"
    sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 1200px">
  <source type="image/webp"
    srcset="hero-640.webp 640w, hero-1280.webp 1280w, hero-1920.webp 1920w"
    sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 1200px">
  <img src="hero-1280.jpg" alt="Descriptive alternative text" width="1200" height="800" loading="lazy" decoding="async">
</picture>

Do not lazy-load the image that is the page’s primary above-the-fold content unless measurement shows it helps. Use meaningful alt text for informative images and an empty alt attribute for purely decorative images.

A decision rule you can apply to each asset

  1. Identify the content. Photograph means JPEG, WebP or AVIF; screenshot, diagram, logo or text-heavy art means PNG, lossless WebP or lossless AVIF.
  2. Check transparency. If pixels must be transparent, exclude JPEG and choose PNG, WebP or AVIF.
  3. Set a quality target. Compare encodes at the displayed size, not only at 100% zoom. Inspect faces, text edges, gradients and fine patterns.
  4. Generate fallbacks. Put AVIF first when its size benefit is meaningful, WebP next, and JPEG or PNG in <img>.
  5. Measure delivery. Check transferred bytes, cache behavior, decoding time and visual quality on representative phones and desktop browsers.

Quick choices

  • Photo, no transparency, maximum compatibility: JPEG fallback, with WebP or AVIF for capable browsers.
  • Screenshot, diagram, logo or line art: PNG, lossless WebP or lossless AVIF; choose after a fidelity and size comparison.
  • Transparent photo or composite: WebP or AVIF, with PNG fallback where required.
  • Animation: WebP or AVIF when your audience and decoders support them; test playback and retain a fallback for older clients.
  • Critical first paint: consider a progressive-capable fallback because AVIF cannot progressively render.

Conversion and quality workflow

Keep the original master separately from delivery files. Export at the largest required display dimensions, remove unnecessary metadata where policy permits, then create each format from the master rather than repeatedly converting one lossy file into another.

WebP conversion

Google provides the cwebp conversion tool. Pick a quality setting based on visual inspection and your content mix; a setting that works for a portrait may damage text or foliage. Automate conversion in your build or image pipeline, but fail the build clearly when an encoder is unavailable.

Common mistakes and fixes

The “smallest” file looks worse

Compression percentages are averages, not targets. Raise quality, change chroma subsampling, or use a lossless mode for text and line art. Compare at the rendered dimensions.

Transparent edges show a halo

The asset may have been composited against a matte color before export. Re-export from the original with a real alpha channel and test on both light and dark backgrounds.

A browser downloads the fallback every time

Check the source MIME type, the type value in <source>, server content negotiation and cache configuration. A malformed or inaccessible modern source is skipped.

AVIF appears late or blank on an older client

Keep WebP and JPEG/PNG sources in the picture chain. Confirm the fallback URL works directly and test the complete chain in the oldest supported browser.

Images cause layout shift

Add accurate dimensions or a reserved aspect ratio to the <img> element and avoid changing the box after decode.

Cost, performance and reliability considerations

Serve modern formats when their byte savings outweigh conversion and compatibility complexity. Cache immutable, content-hashed files for a long time, and monitor real-user transfer sizes rather than relying only on encoder estimates. Keep fallback assets available even if they are rarely requested: they are part of your reliability plan for unsupported clients and decoding failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one image URL automatically return AVIF or WebP?

Yes, an image CDN or server can negotiate formats from the client’s Accept header, but verify that caches vary on that header and that a JPEG or PNG fallback remains available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is lossless WebP always better than PNG?

No. It may be smaller, but PNG can still be preferable for tooling, archival compatibility or a particular graphic. Compare the actual files and verify alpha and color handling.

Should I convert every JPEG to AVIF?

Not automatically. Convert representative assets, inspect quality and decode behavior, and retain fallbacks. Small icons or already-compressed images may show little benefit.
