Choosing the Best Video Format for Mac: H.264, HEVC, ProRes, MOV, and MP4

For a video you need to share widely, choose H.264. Choose HEVC when a smaller file matters and the recipient can play it. For a handoff that will be edited again, consider ProRes if the editing software supports it. Before exporting, check where the video is going, what will open it, and whether it needs to stay editable or preserve transparency.

Start with the difference between a codec and a container

A codec encodes the video stream; a container packages that stream along with audio and potentially other tracks. H.264, HEVC, and ProRes are codecs. MOV and MP4 are containers. They are not competing alternatives at the same level: an export pairs a codec with a container supported by the application and destination.

Apple’s Final Cut Pro format list names H.264, HEVC, and ProRes as video formats, and MOV and MP4 as containers. See Final Cut Pro’s supported media formats.

Which codec should you choose?

H.264 for broad sharing compatibility

Choose H.264 when recipients may use different devices or playback software and compatibility is the priority. In QuickTime Player’s 1080p and 4K export options, Apple labels H.264 “Greater Compatibility.” Apple’s Keynote export guidance also describes H.264 as broadly compatible. These are useful indicators, not a guarantee that every device or application can play every H.264 file.

  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

HEVC when file size matters

HEVC, also called H.265, is a good option when you want a smaller export and know the recipient’s setup supports it. QuickTime Player labels HEVC “Smaller File Size” for 1080p and 4K exports, and Apple describes HEVC as providing better compression than H.264 while preserving the same visual quality in its Keynote guidance. These are qualitative comparisons: Apple does not give a universal size-saving percentage, and the result depends on the video and export settings.

If a recipient’s device does not support newer media formats, Apple says media shared through methods such as AirDrop, Messages, or email may automatically be shared in a more compatible format. That behavior depends on the sharing method and receiving device, so do not assume every transfer will convert the file.

ProRes for an editing handoff

Consider ProRes when the next step is editing in software that supports it, rather than simply watching or sharing a compact final copy. Apple names ProRes 422 as an option for a movie that will be edited in software such as Final Cut Pro, and lists ProRes variants including LT and Proxy. The right variant depends on the receiving workflow; confirm what the editor or application requires before exporting.

Choose a container that fits the destination

MOV and MP4 are both listed among the containers supported by Final Cut Pro, but the application you use to export determines which combinations and controls are available. QuickTime Player exports a QuickTime movie with a .mov extension using H.264 or HEVC; it does not export MP4 video. If you specifically need an MP4, use a documented workflow or application that offers that output rather than treating the QuickTime Player .mov export as MP4.

Apple’s QuickTime Player export instructions explain the available controls. For an editing workflow, Final Cut Pro’s format list distinguishes supported video formats and containers.

Make the choice for your actual workflow

  1. Identify the recipient and playback software. If you cannot confirm support for a newer codec, H.264 is the safer default for sharing.
  2. Decide whether size or compatibility matters more. Consider HEVC for a smaller-file goal when the destination supports it; do not count on a fixed reduction.
  3. Check whether the video will be edited again. For an editing handoff, ask which ProRes format and container the receiving workflow accepts.
  4. Confirm the required container and extension. In particular, QuickTime Player’s export is .mov, not MP4.
  5. Check for transparency. If the video has an alpha channel, verify that the export route and receiving application preserve it.

Convert HEVC to H.264 when a recipient needs it

Apple documents two manual conversion routes for an HEVC video. In QuickTime Player, open the video and choose “Greater Compatibility” when exporting; this exports H.264. Alternatively, in Finder, select the video, choose “Encode Selected Video Files,” and select an H.264 setting. The exact available options can depend on the macOS version.

Preserve transparency only when the workflow supports it

QuickTime Player shows a preserve-transparency option only for a movie with an alpha channel, such as ProRes 4444. Apple’s documented QuickTime route exports that transparency with HEVC. This is a specific capability of that workflow, not a guarantee for every codec, application, or receiving device. If transparency is essential, test the exported file in the destination application before relying on it.

What Apple’s format guidance does—and does not—establish

Apple’s documentation accessed on October 7, 2026, supports these practical distinctions: H.264 is labeled the compatibility choice in QuickTime Player; HEVC is labeled the smaller-file choice; and ProRes can suit editing workflows that support it. Apple’s ProRes comparison comes from guidance published September 26, 2024. The cited material does not provide a universal compression ratio or a compatibility matrix covering every Mac, operating-system version, third-party player, and recipient device. Check the destination’s requirements when compatibility is critical.
