If the journal must work fully offline, confirm exactly what “offline” means for the specific app: where entries are stored, whether an account or connection is required, and whether backups, exports, or optional features send data elsewhere.
What a food and symptom diary can tell you
University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust says comparing symptoms with foods eaten can be useful for identifying possible triggers. Its patient leaflet, reviewed in February 2026, notes that symptoms after a trigger food may appear immediately or within 48 hours. A diary can preserve those observations for a conversation with a healthcare professional; a pattern alone does not establish cause and effect.

What your sister should record
Choose a format she can keep up with, and capture enough context to make entries useful without turning each meal into a chore. NIDDK-hosted IBS study materials include a diary template covering bowel habits, pain, food, emotions, medication, and exercise; those fields can inform a practical record without implying that every person needs to track everything.

- Food and drink: what she ate or drank, with approximate portions or notable ingredients when helpful.
- Timing: when she ate or drank, and when a symptom began. Include the delay rather than only pairing a symptom with the most recent meal.
- Symptoms: what happened, when, and a simple description of severity or duration in her own words.
- Relevant context: medication and daily factors such as exercise or emotions, if she finds them relevant.
Consistency matters more than a complicated form. A paper notebook, a basic notes format, or an app can all capture the same observations; the sources do not establish that one format is clinically superior.
How to check whether an app is genuinely offline
“Offline” is an app-specific technical claim, not a blanket guarantee about every feature or data flow. Before choosing one, check its store disclosures and privacy information, then test the exact functions your sister expects to use without a connection.

- Storage: Does the developer say diary entries remain on the device, or are they stored in an account or cloud service?
- Setup: Is an account, sign-in, or initial network connection required?
- Optional features: Could analytics, reminders, sharing, or other functions transmit data?
- Exports and backups: Does exporting, syncing, or backing up send entries off the device? Is there a way to make a copy she controls?
- Offline behavior: Can she add, review, and edit records in airplane mode, and do those records remain available after restarting the app?
Examples illustrate why these checks matter, but they do not verify an unrelated app. Monash says diary entries in its own Low FODMAP app are stored locally and provides instructions for using that app offline; those details apply to Monash’s app only. See Monash’s app information.
TummyTrail’s Google Play listing, updated 16 August 2026, says it works fully offline and that entries stay on the phone. The same listing’s data-safety section also lists possible collection of financial information and device or other IDs. Those statements distinguish diary-entry storage from other app data; they are developer-provided listing disclosures, not an independent audit. Check the TummyTrail listing.

Lunaire’s Google Play listing makes its own local-only and no-data-collected claims. Treat those as claims about that app from its developer, not proof that another journal is offline or that every app feature has been independently verified. Check the Lunaire listing.

The most suitable choice is the one she can use consistently while feeling comfortable with how the records are kept and shared. If a paper alternative is preferable, a basic food and symptom diary notebook is enough; it does not need to be a specialized or clinically validated product.

What app studies do—and do not—show
A diary may help organize observations, but that is different from evidence that an app improves symptoms or care. In the Health Research Authority’s ADAPT study summary, 20 patients enrolled and were randomly assigned to an online 24-hour dietary recall or the usual interview, with follow-up over six months. Low recruitment meant the study could not measure effects on symptoms, consultation length, or quality of care. It therefore does not establish that a food-journal app improves IBS symptoms.
