What kind of Dragonbane expansion do you need?
These books expand different parts of a campaign rather than competing to do the same job. Arkand gives the Gamemaster a setting and locations to build adventures around. Book of Magic broadens the rules and fiction around magic, giving players and the Gamemaster more options to work with.

Dragonbane is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game from Free League, designed for fast play and little preparation. Its skill-based D20 rules have characters roll equal to or below a skill value to succeed; the publisher describes the intended tone as “mirth and mayhem.” The two expansions build on that foundation in distinct ways rather than replacing the core rules. Free League describes Arkand as a city campaign sourcebook with 20 adventure sites across five districts, campaign seeds, an underworld power struggle, demon-hunting opportunities, and secrets about the city’s past. It also includes a separate full-color map measuring 17 x 22 inches (432 x 558 mm), credited to Francesca Baerald. The appeal is practical as well as atmospheric: the city provides a concentrated setting with places to visit and conflicts that can generate sessions. Ridge Harripersad’s CGMagazine review, dated August 25, 2026, describes Arkand as a shift from the forests, mountains, and plains of earlier Dragonbane material toward more water-based activity. Harripersad reports that the table enjoyed the setting and specifically praises the included map. Those are one reviewer’s impressions, not a guarantee of how every group will respond. A preparation caveat to check
Harripersad also flags one specific encounter: a giant-octopus scene directs the Gamemaster to the Dragonbane Bestiary entry, with a demon offered as a fallback if the Bestiary is unavailable. The reviewer objects that the fallback has substantially different statistics. This is a reported issue with one example, not evidence that the whole book depends on the Bestiary. If you plan to run that encounter, check the relevant Arkand text and Bestiary entry in advance so you know what preparation it requires.

What Book of Magic adds
Book of Magic introduces nine schools—Demonology, Harmonism, Illusionism, Necromancy, Symbolism, Witchcraft, Alchemy, Enchanting, and Dracomancy—and adds material to General Magic, Animism, Elementalism, and Mentalism. Free League describes the book as containing over 300 spells, magical recipes, enchantments, and magic tricks, along with lore on practitioners, their social standing and reputation, familiars, and where characters can find training. When the options may be too much
Scroll for Initiative describes Book of Magic as an optional 138-page hardcover that requires only the core rules. The reviewer recommends it for groups already playing and enjoying Dragonbane, while cautioning that less experienced groups may find the number of additional choices daunting. This is buying guidance from one reviewer, not a system rule: a group comfortable learning from a broad menu may be ready sooner, while a group still settling into the core game may prefer to add options later. Which book should you buy first?
Pick Arkand if the campaign needs a setting
- You want the next campaign or arc to revolve around a city rather than adding more character rules.
- You value mapped districts, adventure sites, and seeds that can help generate sessions.
- Your group is happy for the Gamemaster to introduce a new setting with its own conflicts and secrets.
Pick Book of Magic if the campaign needs more magical options
- Your players want more ways to define magical characters.
- You want additional magic-related material for character advancement and adventure preparation.
- Your group already has enough familiarity with Dragonbane to judge which new options it wants to use.
Consider both only if both needs are real
The books can complement one another: Arkand supplies a place to adventure, while Book of Magic expands the magical material available to characters and the Gamemaster. But buying both at once also means introducing two different kinds of supplemental content. If the group is still learning the core game, adding one book at a time makes it easier to see which material the campaign actually uses.

Are the accessories necessary?
Free League also offers a Friends & Foes Standee Set with 79 illustrated cardboard standees for Path of Glory and Arkand. The publisher says bases are sold separately unless you use bases from the Dragonbane Core Set. Availability and format
Free League says Book of Magic purchases include a complete PDF delivered through DriveThruRPG. Launch coverage dated August 25, 2026 reported the expansions through publisher retail, hobby stores, DriveThruRPG, and Foundry VTT Marketplace.
