Start with those four checks before comparing appearance, reach, or price. A dual arm rated for 20-pound displays is unsuitable for a 25-pound screen, even if the VESA plate appears to fit.
The models below are useful reference points for different jobs: Ergotron’s MXV for two standard displays, Humanscale’s M8 Pro for a single heavy display or a specified light dual setup, and Humanscale’s M2 Pro for lighter monitors. Their published specifications are manufacturer claims, not independent test results, so verify the exact regional configuration before ordering.

Check compatibility before choosing a model
A monitor arm is a structural mount, not merely an accessory for raising a screen. The arm, clamp or grommet, desk surface, VESA screws, and monitor enclosure all share the load. A mismatch can cause sagging, excessive movement, damaged desk edges, or a mount that pulls away from the surface.

1. Weigh the display that will actually hang on the arm
Use the monitor’s weight without its factory stand when the manufacturer gives separate figures. Include any permanently attached accessories that will remain on the screen. Compare that number with the arm’s stated range for each display, not just with a broad product-family description.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, the Ergotron MXV dual arm specifies 7–20 lb per display and a maximum combined display weight of 40 lb. Both limits apply: two 20-pound monitors reach the combined ceiling, while a single 21-pound monitor exceeds the per-display range even though the total would be below 40 lb.
2. Match the VESA hole pattern
Look at the threaded holes on the back of the monitor and measure their horizontal and vertical spacing in millimetres. The MXV uses VESA FDMI MIS-D patterns of 75×75 mm and 100×100 mm. A different pattern, a recessed mounting area, or a non-standard screw depth may require a model-specific adapter.
Do not assume that a monitor’s size implies its VESA pattern. Two 27-inch screens can use different layouts, and an ultrawide or curved model may have a deeper recess that changes which hardware is needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Confirm the desk attachment
Measure the thickness of the desk at the exact location where the clamp will sit. The MXV’s two-piece clamp is specified for edges 0.47–1.25 inches thick. A desk thinner or thicker than that range needs another mounting solution.
A through-desk grommet mount can be preferable when the rear edge is inaccessible, when a clamp would interfere with a cable tray, or when the desk has a suitable existing hole. Ergotron lists a grommet option for the MXV, but a grommet installation requires a correctly sized hole and access beneath the surface. Never drill until you have confirmed the mount’s hole diameter, bolt length, and clearance requirements.

4. Account for screen depth and clearance
Depth changes leverage. Ergotron notes that a display deeper than 3.5 inches may reduce the MXV’s capacity. A thick curved monitor can therefore impose a stricter practical limit than its scale weight suggests.
Measure from the VESA mounting plane to the furthest point at the back of the housing. Also check whether the arm can fold without striking a wall, shelf, desk riser, or a second screen. Leave room for cables to bend without pulling on the display.

Ergotron says screens up to 27 inches may be accommodated with reduced adjustment capability, even where the nominal listing indicates a smaller size. That qualification matters: a screen can be physically attachable yet unable to tilt, rotate, or align as freely as a shallower, lighter panel.

Best fit for a standard two-monitor desk: Ergotron MXV
The MXV is the clearest match when you need two conventional monitors and each one falls inside the 7–20-pound range. Its 40-pound combined limit prevents a common mistake: checking only one arm while overlooking the load on the shared base and desk clamp.

What the MXV specification covers
- Two displays, each weighing 7–20 lb.
- Maximum combined display weight of 40 lb.
- 75×75 mm or 100×100 mm VESA FDMI MIS-D mounting patterns.
- Two-piece clamp for a 0.47–1.25-inch-thick desk edge.
- 17.8 inches of extension and up to 22.5 inches from the rear of the base to the VESA plate.
- Optional grommet mount for a through-hole installation.
- Optional Notebook Tray, part 50-193-200, for a laptop-holding configuration.
- A listed 10-year warranty.
Use the extension figures as planning dimensions, not as a promise that every desk layout will reach the same position. A deep desktop, wall behind the desk, or a monitor with a thick rear housing can reduce usable movement.

When the MXV is a poor match
Choose another capacity class when either screen is outside the 7–20-pound range, when the rear housing is deeper than 3.5 inches and the reduced capacity would be unsafe, or when your desk edge falls outside the clamp range. The optional tray is also not a generic laptop solution; confirm that the tray and arm configuration are compatible before ordering.
Best fit for a heavy single monitor: Humanscale M8 Pro
Humanscale describes the M8 Pro for a single display weighing 9–50 lb. That makes it the relevant option among these examples for a heavy professional monitor, large curved display, or other screen that exceeds the lighter-arm classes.
An optional crossbar configuration supports two monitors up to 12 lb each. Treat that as a separate setup, not as permission to hang two 20-pound screens from the single-display rating. Verify the selected crossbar, arm count, VESA hardware, and local specification before purchase.
Questions to resolve for an M8 Pro installation
- Is your screen within the 9–50-pound single-display range after removing its stand?
- If using two screens, is each one 12 lb or less and is the crossbar included in the configuration you are buying?
- Does the selected regional kit specify the clamp or grommet limits for your desk?
- Does the VESA plate match the monitor’s hole spacing and screw depth?
The published capacity does not establish how much wall clearance, reach, or tilt range your particular display will have. Those dimensions must be confirmed for the exact arm and configuration.

Best fit for lighter monitors: Humanscale M2 Pro
The M2 Pro is intended for lighter monitors up to 22 lb. Humanscale also lists an M2.1 configuration accommodating one monitor up to 15.5 lb. Those are not interchangeable figures: the family-level limit and the M2.1 configuration limit describe different specifications.
Use the exact model number printed on the product page or box when checking capacity. If your monitor is close to either limit, account for the arm’s stated configuration and the display’s depth instead of relying on a rounded weight estimate.
Why a lighter arm can be the better choice
An arm designed for a lighter load can be easier to position and may avoid paying for capacity you do not need. The decision still depends on the desk mount, VESA fit, and available adjustment. A lightweight 24-inch screen with an unusual mounting recess can be less compatible than a heavier screen with a standard pattern.
How to measure your monitor and desk
- Remove the factory stand. Place the monitor face-down on a clean, padded surface and follow the manufacturer’s stand-removal procedure. Do not guess the stand screw locations.
- Record the display weight. Use the monitor-only figure when available. If the manufacturer lists a range, use the higher value for compatibility checking.
- Measure VESA spacing. Measure centre-to-centre horizontally and vertically. Record whether the holes are 75×75 mm, 100×100 mm, or another arrangement.
- Check the recess. Measure the distance from the VESA mounting plane to the deepest rear point and note whether an adapter plate or spacers are required.
- Measure the desk edge. Check thickness at the intended clamp position, including any bevel, trim, cable channel, or raised rear lip.
- Map the arm’s footprint. Mark where the base, clamp, or grommet will sit and measure to the wall, shelf, and neighbouring monitor positions.
- Plan cable slack. Leave a service loop so moving the arm does not pull the power or video connector out of the monitor.
Installation procedure that avoids the common failures
- Read the exact model instructions. Confirm the supplied screws, spacers, clamp range, and any required tools before attaching hardware.
- Inspect the desk surface. Do not clamp to a hollow, cracked, badly chipped, or unsupported edge. Reinforce or relocate the mount if the desktop flexes under hand pressure.
- Install the clamp or grommet squarely. Keep the base fully seated and tighten evenly. For a grommet, confirm the hole is the specified size and that the underside washer or plate sits flat.
- Attach the VESA plate before lifting the monitor. Select screws that engage the manufacturer’s permitted thread depth. If the holes are recessed, use only the supplied or approved spacers.
- Lift with two people for large or heavy screens. Engage the monitor on the arm’s interface completely before releasing it. A partial hook or latch engagement can let the screen drop.
- Balance the arm gradually. Adjust tension in small increments while the display is supported. If the arm rises, sinks, or drifts, stop and correct tension rather than forcing the joints.
- Set height and alignment. Position the primary screen directly in front of you, then align the second display. Check that the arm does not strike the desk or wall at the ends of its travel.
- Secure cables last. Route cables through the arm channels with enough slack for the full extension and tilt range.
- Recheck all fasteners. After the first adjustment session, inspect the clamp, VESA screws, and cable clips. Retighten only according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Choose by workspace scenario
One ordinary monitor
Start with the M2 Pro class if the monitor is light enough, then compare the exact VESA and desk requirements. If the screen is between 9 and 50 lb and you want more capacity, the M8 Pro single-display specification is the relevant reference.
Two similar monitors
The MXV provides a clearly stated per-screen and combined limit for two displays. Add both monitor weights, then check each one individually against 7–20 lb. Do not use a single-display arm’s rating as a substitute for a dual-arm specification.

One heavy or deep curved monitor
Check the M8 Pro’s 9–50-pound single-display range first, then investigate the exact depth and clearance limits. Weight alone does not describe the leverage created by a deep curved housing.
Two lightweight monitors on a heavy-duty arm
The M8 Pro crossbar option is specified for two monitors up to 12 lb each. It may be suitable when each screen is light but you want the single-arm family’s capacity margin. Confirm that the crossbar is part of the selected bundle.
Laptop plus monitor
The MXV listing identifies Notebook Tray part 50-193-200 as an accessory. Verify tray compatibility, the resulting load, and the final height before treating a monitor arm as a laptop stand.

Desk and monitor problems that cause failed installations
- Buying by screen size alone: Size does not reveal weight, VESA spacing, housing depth, or desk clearance.
- Ignoring the combined dual-arm limit: Two displays can exceed the base or clamp’s total rating even when each arm appears acceptable.
- Clamping to a weak edge: A particleboard lip, glass panel, or thin desktop may deform under concentrated force. Confirm the desk material and support before installation.
- Using the wrong screw length: A screw that is too short can pull out; one that is too long can damage internal components. Use the specified hardware and spacers.
- Overlooking depth: A display deeper than the cited limit can reduce capacity and make the arm sag or drift.
- Assuming every configuration shares the same rating: The M2 Pro family and M2.1, or the M8 Pro single and crossbar versions, have different stated capacities.
- Routing cables tightly: Taut cables can pull a monitor out of alignment and restrict the arm’s movement.
- Skipping a stability check: If the desk flexes, the clamp moves, or the arm cannot hold position after tension adjustment, stop using the mount until the cause is corrected.
A practical buying checklist
- Monitor weight recorded without the factory stand.
- VESA pattern and screw depth confirmed.
- Rear housing depth measured, especially for a curved or thick display.
- Per-display and combined capacity checked for multi-monitor setups.
- Desk thickness measured at the actual mounting point.
- Clamp, grommet, or through-hole method selected for the desk’s construction.
- Wall, shelf, and neighbouring-screen clearance mapped.
- Exact configuration and regional specification verified.
- Accessories such as a crossbar or laptop tray confirmed as compatible.
- Warranty and availability checked on the current manufacturer listing, since both can change by region and date.
Bottom line: match the mount, not the marketing category
For two standard displays within 7–20 lb each, the MXV is the most fully documented dual-monitor example here, with a 40-pound combined limit and defined clamp range. For a single display from 9–50 lb, the M8 Pro is the heavy-monitor reference; its optional crossbar changes the limit to two screens up to 12 lb each. For lighter screens, the M2 Pro family is the appropriate starting point, but the exact configuration can lower the stated limit to 15.5 lb.
Whichever arm you select, verify the four physical interfaces—weight, VESA pattern, screen depth, and desk attachment—before ordering. Ergotron’s desk-mount guidance summarizes the core requirement: “Because of how it moves, a monitor arm requires secure attachment to a surface—it either clamps to the surface’s edge or screws on through a grommet hole.”
