The right kitchen faucet fits your sink and cabinets, reaches the places you need to rinse, and offers controls and spray settings that suit your routine. Before choosing a finish or feature, check the mounting holes, faucet dimensions, basin depth, cabinet clearance, and rated water flow. Then decide whether a pull-down or pull-out wand and single- or two-handle controls work better for your kitchen.
What to check before buying a kitchen faucet
Start with the sink and installation space, not the faucet’s appearance. A faucet that looks right may still be incompatible with the existing holes or difficult to use because of its height, reach, or the space beneath the sink.

- Mounting holes and spacing: Count the holes in the sink or countertop and measure their spacing. Some faucets include a deck plate that covers unused holes, but whether it fits your installation depends on the specific model.
- Spout height and reach: Check the faucet’s dimensions against the basin and nearby wall cabinets or shelves. A high spout can make it easier to place large cookware beneath it, but confirm that it has enough clearance in your kitchen.
- Basin shape and depth: Consider where you wash dishes, fill pots, and rinse produce. The wand’s reach and direction should make those tasks comfortable without creating awkward splashing.
- Under-sink access: Check the cabinet for room to work around the faucet connections and supply lines. Consult the selected model’s installation instructions for its specific requirements.
- Existing plumbing and local rules: Confirm that the faucet can connect to your setup and that its rated flow is allowed where you live.
Pull-down vs. pull-out kitchen faucets
The main difference is how the spray wand moves. A pull-down wand extends from a taller, usually high-arc spout into the basin. A pull-out wand draws outward from a generally shorter faucet. Neither style is automatically right for every sink; match the movement and reach to your basin and available counter space.
| Configuration | How the wand moves | May suit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pull-down | Extends downward from the spout into the sink. | Deeper basins and tasks that benefit from reaching down into the sink. | Spout height, overhead clearance, and whether the wand can reach the areas you use. |
| Pull-out | Draws outward toward the user from a generally shorter faucet. | Wider or shallower sinks, or kitchens where a more compact faucet profile is preferable. | Wand reach across the basin and the room available to pull it outward. |
These are general design distinctions, not guarantees about a specific faucet’s reach or performance. Compare the dimensions and installation details of the model you are considering.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Single-handle or two-handle controls?
Choose based on how you prefer to set water temperature and flow. A single handle combines both adjustments in one lever. Two-handle designs use separate controls for hot and cold water.
- Single handle: A streamlined control lets you adjust temperature and flow with one lever. Check its placement and movement against your sink layout and habits.
- Two handles: Separate hot- and cold-water handles allow independent adjustment. Make sure the sink or countertop has the required holes and spacing for the faucet you select.
Which spray modes and activation features matter?
Some faucets let you switch between a regular stream and one or more spray patterns. The available modes vary by model: manufacturer catalogs, for example, describe stream, Sweep spray, and Boost modes on many—but not all—faucets. Treat these as model-specific features, and check what each mode does on the exact faucet rather than assuming that every model includes them.

Touch or sensor activation is also available on some models, not as a standard feature across the category. Consider whether you want to turn water on without operating a conventional handle, and check how the selected model works and what it requires. Docking systems vary too. Some manufacturers describe magnet-assisted wand docking on particular product lines; do not assume that a faucet has this feature unless its specifications say so.
Manufacturers also make claims about the performance of particular spray technologies. For example, Delta says its ShieldSpray technology produces an average of 90% less splatter than a standard spray. That is a manufacturer claim for its named technology, not an independent test result or a general property of kitchen faucets.

Choose a profile and finish for your kitchen
Faucets range from traditional shapes to transitional designs and contemporary profiles. Compare the spout, handle shape, and overall proportions with your sink and the rest of the kitchen. A high-arc profile can accommodate large pots and cookware, according to manufacturer guidance, but verify the actual dimensions and overhead clearance for the model.
Finishes also vary by model. You can coordinate the faucet with cabinet hardware and other fixtures or deliberately mix finishes. In either case, judge the faucet in the context of the room rather than choosing a finish in isolation. Availability and finish names are model-specific.

Understand kitchen-faucet flow rates and U.S. guidance
For U.S. shoppers, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s July 2023 WaterSense Labeled Homes Technical Sheet: Kitchen Faucets reports a federal maximum kitchen-faucet flow rate of 2.2 gallons per minute (gpm) at 60 psi. The sheet says many models rated from 1.5 to 1.8 gpm are available for greater efficiency or to meet local requirements, and recommends models in that range to save water compared with the federal standard.

These figures are U.S.-specific guidance, not a substitute for checking rules in your state or municipality. The EPA sheet notes that some jurisdictions set stricter limits. Check the selected faucet’s rated flow and your local requirements; the rating and any special operating modes are model-specific.

The same EPA sheet states: “WaterSense does not have a specification that applies to kitchen faucets.” Do not treat a kitchen faucet as WaterSense-labeled on that basis. The sheet directs readers to models certified to ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1 Plumbing Supply Fittings; check the product documentation and applicable local requirements for the faucet you plan to install.
Make the choice in a practical order
- Confirm compatibility: Record the mounting-hole count and spacing, measure the available height and reach, and check cabinet and supply-line access.
- Match the wand to the basin: Compare pull-down and pull-out movement with your basin depth, width, and counter space.
- Choose the controls: Decide whether you prefer one lever for flow and temperature or separate hot- and cold-water handles, then confirm the required mounting holes.
- Prioritize useful features: Select only the spray modes, touch or sensor activation, and docking features you want, and verify each one in the model specifications.
- Check flow and finish: Confirm the faucet’s rated gpm against local rules, then choose a profile and finish that work with the kitchen.
- Review installation details: Read the selected model’s instructions and compare them with your plumbing and under-sink space before buying.
Manufacturer buying guides from KOHLER and Delta offer examples of how faucet shapes, wand designs, and features can differ by model. Their descriptions are guidance from those manufacturers, not independent comparative testing. The available information does not establish an objectively best faucet, a durability ranking, or a model-level performance winner, so base your decision on fit, specifications, and the tasks you need the faucet to handle.
