If you mean no subscription at all, Abode’s free tier still provides basic self-monitoring, while Ring’s no-plan mode does not send digital alerts. For cameras with local recording and no monthly storage fee, compatible Eufy products are a separate, camera-focused route.
These five options are not interchangeable, and “self-monitoring” does not mean an outside service will respond to an alarm. The comparison below focuses on what the manufacturer documentation says remains available without professional monitoring. Plan features, prices, bundles and availability can change; the stated prices are U.S. terms unless noted otherwise.

How these five options differ
This is a feature-based shortlist, not a hands-on ranking: no installation, detection, reliability or response-time testing is represented. The practical differences are whether a system sends phone alerts without a professional plan, whether video can be saved, and whether a recurring subscription is needed for the specific feature you want.

| Abode | Free-plan system control, generic push notifications, live video and integrations. | No event timeline, stored clips, rich notifications or automations on the free plan. Cellular backup and professional monitoring are Pro features. |
| Arlo Home Security System | The Arlo Secure app alerts you to security events without a Professional Monitoring plan. | Alerts are for you to act on; 24/7 live safety agents are not notified. Cellular and battery backup are sold separately, and the documented emergency-agent backup workflow is for professional monitoring. |
| Ring Alarm | Without a subscription, you can arm and disarm at the keypad and the siren sounds. | No digital notifications are sent in no-subscription mode. App arming/disarming and notifications require a compatible plan. |
| SimpliSafe | A paid self-monitoring plan includes camera recordings. | The U.S. plan page lists this option at $9.99 per month; it is not a no-subscription service. |
| Eufy Security | Compatible products can store camera footage locally without a monthly storage fee. | The cited no-fee information is from Eufy’s UK pages and concerns compatible camera/storage products; it does not establish that every bundle is a complete alarm system. |
1. Abode: free app-based self-monitoring
Abode is a strong fit if you want an alarm hub with app-based control and alerts but do not want to pay for professional monitoring. Its free plan includes system control, self-monitoring, live video, integrations and generic push notifications. The trade-off is that the free tier omits an event timeline, stored clips, rich notifications and automations. See Abode’s plan comparison and free-plan details.
#1 Best Overall
- A great fit for 2-4 bedroom homes, this Alarm Kit includes one Base Station, two Keypads, eight Contact Sensors, two Motion Detectors, and one Range Extender.
- Includes an intuitive Keypad that can arm and disarm your Alarm and Contact Sensors that detect when doors or windows open.
- Choose the Ring Alarm Kit that fits your needs and detect even more with additional Alarm Sensors and accessories (sold separately) at any time.
- Receive mobile notifications when your system is triggered and monitor all your Ring devices all through the Ring app.
- More peace of mind. Subscribe to a compatible Ring Protect Plan (sold separately) to Arm your Alarm from anywhere, keep your system online if the Wi-Fi goes down, and more. Plus, get 24/7 Professional Monitoring for emergency police, fire and medical response, and more.
Abode says free-plan users can still use integrations including Apple HomeKit, Alexa, Google Assistant and Sonos. If you want recorded clips, an event timeline, automations or geofencing, those are listed under Standard and Pro. Professional monitoring and 4G cellular backup are Pro features. The U.S. pricing page displayed Standard at $79.99 per year and Pro at $245.99 per year when checked in 2026; verify current terms before buying.
Best for: people who want basic phone alerts and control without a recurring fee, and can accept generic notifications with no stored clips or automations on the free tier.
2. Arlo Home Security System: app alerts without professional monitoring
Arlo says its self-monitoring option sends security-event alerts through the Arlo Secure app when you do not have a Professional Monitoring plan. The app alert goes to you; 24/7 live safety agents are not notified. You are responsible for deciding what to do when an alert arrives. The system documentation describes a keypad sensor hub, modes, an integrated siren, a motion sensor and a microphone that listens for smoke or carbon-monoxide alarms. See Arlo’s self-monitoring explanation and quick-start guide.

- A great fit for 1-2 bedroom homes, this kit includes one base station, one keypad, four contact sensors, one motion detector, and one range extender.
- Includes an intuitive Keypad that can arm and disarm your Alarm and Contact Sensors that detect when doors or windows open.
- Choose the Ring Alarm Kit that fits your needs and detect even more with additional Alarm Sensors and accessories (sold separately) at any time.

Cellular and battery backup are sold separately. Arlo’s support comparison describes continued operation and cellular alerts during power and internet outages in the professional-monitoring case; it should not be read as a promise that self-monitored users receive the same emergency-agent response or backup workflow.
Best for: buyers whose priority is receiving app alerts and who may want the option of professional monitoring later, while remaining prepared to respond themselves.
3. Ring Alarm: a physical alarm that works without alerts
Ring’s no-subscription mode allows keypad arming and disarming, and the siren sounds when triggered. It does not send digital notifications. That makes Ring a poor fit if “self-monitoring” means getting an alert on your phone, even though the physical alarm can still be used without a plan. Ring also describes remote app arming/disarming and Alarm Professional Monitoring as subscription features. Check the Ring Alarm 8-piece kit and Ring’s subscription support information.

- Arm and disarm from just about anywhere: control your full security system from the ADT+ app and get real-time phone alerts the moment a door or window sensor is triggered.
- Grows with your home: start with this kit and add indoor cameras, outdoor cameras, doorbell cameras, glass break sensors, and more. Ideal apartment security system that scales as you do.
Ring’s plan page listed Solo at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, Multi at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, Pro at $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year, and Virtual Security Guard at $99 per month when checked in 2026. These are listed plan prices, not monitoring-only prices in every case; eligibility and plan terms can change. Ring says Alarm Professional Monitoring requires an eligible plan.
Best for: someone comfortable using the keypad and siren without phone notifications, or willing to pay for the compatible subscription features they need.
4. SimpliSafe: camera recording requires a paid self-monitoring plan
SimpliSafe’s U.S. support page, updated June 29, 2026, lists a Self-Monitoring with Camera Recordings plan at $9.99 per month. It includes 30 days of recordings for up to 10 cameras, with downloads. The same page lists Standard at $22.99 per month and Pro Plus at $79.99 per month, distinguishing paid monitoring and dispatch features from self-monitoring. See SimpliSafe’s plan information.
Rank #4

- HD Surveillance Camera: This home security system includes one HD WiFi-connectable camera. Paired with motion detectors and door/window sensors, it enables remote visual monitoring of residential security — no subscription or monthly fees required for thecamera.(MicroSD card sold separately;supports up to 256GB)
- Voice Control & Color Screen Display: Supports connection to smart voice assistants, enabling voice control for home security systems to free hands. The main unit's color screen can display system status, weather, and date, and supports 10 international languages.
- Tamper Protection & Multi-alarm: Home Security System features physical tamper-proof design. Unauthorized removal triggers an alarm requiring a security code to disarm, while automatically sendingphone, SMS and APP alerts for constant security monitoring.
- WiFi+4G Connectivity, No Monthly Fees:Home Security System can connect to 2.4GHz WiFi (5G not supported) and can insert a 4G SIM card for phone call and SMS alarm functions. Permanently free to use after activation with no additional charges.
This is an option for someone who wants camera recordings without professional monitoring, not a no-subscription system. The cited plan page does not fully enumerate which basic functions remain available without any plan, so do not assume that all app or recording features work for free.
Best for: buyers who specifically want a paid camera-recording tier without paying for professional monitoring.
5. Eufy Security: local camera storage without a monthly storage fee
Eufy’s official UK pages promote local storage without a monthly storage fee for compatible products, including the HomeBase 3 ecosystem. This suits buyers whose main goal is camera surveillance and local recordings rather than an externally monitored alarm service. Consult Eufy’s UK security products page and HomeBase 3 product details for compatibility and storage information.
Best Value

- Easy Setup & Lightning Alerts: DIY in minutes. Stick included door/window sensors or mount motion detectors. Ultra‑sensitive sensors instantly activate the powerful 120dB buzzer siren and push APP notifications. The loud buzzer helps deter intruders effectively. Fast response keeps your home safe
Local video storage is not the same as a complete alarm system. The cited pages do not establish that every Eufy camera bundle includes a full alarm hub-and-sensor setup, so check the exact kit’s alarm functions and compatibility before treating it as a replacement for one. The no-monthly-storage-fee claim is tied to compatible products and the cited UK product information.
Best for: people prioritizing local camera recordings and avoiding a monthly cloud-storage fee, provided the specific devices meet their security needs.
Pick by the feature you need
- Phone alerts with no professional monitoring: Abode’s free plan offers generic push notifications; Arlo says its app sends security-event alerts without a Professional Monitoring plan.
- App control with no recurring fee: Abode’s free plan includes system control. Ring’s no-subscription mode does not include digital notifications or app arming/disarming.
- Camera recordings without professional monitoring: SimpliSafe lists a paid $9.99-per-month self-monitoring recording plan; compatible Eufy products offer local storage without a monthly storage fee, according to its UK pages.
- A physical alarm without phone alerts: Ring’s keypad and siren remain usable without a subscription.
- Cellular backup: Abode lists 4G cellular backup with Pro. Arlo sells cellular and battery backup separately, but its cited backup/alert description is for the professional-monitoring case.
What self-monitoring does—and does not—do
A self-monitored system sends information to you, if its plan and features support alerts. It does not by itself put an outside service in charge of responding. You may need to check the alert, contact emergency services, or take another appropriate step yourself. Professional monitoring is the separate service involving an external monitoring provider and an emergency-response workflow; system and plan terms determine exactly what is included.
