Choose Until Dawn for a cinematic slasher, The Quarry for a teen-horror camp story with documented voting modes, or Telltale’s The Walking Dead for an episodic character drama whose decisions can carry between seasons. The right choice depends less on an objective “best” game than on the horror setting, how you want decisions presented, whether other people will vote with you, and which platform and edition you own.

There is an important practical difference between the three. Until Dawn has a rebuilt PS5/PC release as well as the original PS4 version; The Quarry launched across PlayStation, Xbox and Windows PC; and The Walking Dead has edition-specific save rules that determine whether earlier choices can be carried forward.

At a glance: which game fits your preference?

Game Horror and setting How choices are framed Playing with others Continuity between releases
Until Dawn Cinematic slasher horror focused on a group of characters Branching narrative in which choices influence the story and character fates Officially single-player; PlayStation also presents it as a cinematic group experience where people decide together The rebuilt release is separate from the original PS4 release; no cross-edition save promise is established here
The Quarry Cinematic teen horror at a summer camp, featuring nine counselors Choices shape the story; multiplayer modes can put decisions to a vote 2K documents local and online options, including voting with up to seven friends in one mode; details vary by mode and platform Story continuity is primarily within the game session rather than a documented season-to-season save system
Telltale’s The Walking Dead Episodic, character-led survival drama in a zombie setting Decisions can affect later episodes and seasons The cited guidance concerns save setup and story reconstruction, not a general group-voting campaign Eligible local saves can affect The Final Season; Story Builder options exist, while old standalone saves cannot be imported into the Definitive Series

This table describes the distinctions documented by PlayStation, 2K and Skybound. It does not rank scariness, writing quality, replay value, the number of branches or the significance of every choice; those are not established by the official descriptions used here.

What “choice-driven horror” means in these games

All three titles put decisions at the center of the experience, but they use that idea differently. You watch scenes, explore enough to understand the situation, and then select dialogue or actions that alter what happens next. The tension comes from making a decision without complete information, not from treating the game as a conventional action title with a fixed sequence of scares.

Until Dawn -PS5
  • Decide the fate of eight survivors in this seminal horror classic, rebuilt and enhanced with new content for PS5 consoles.
  • Explore a rich, detailed environment brought to life with cutting-edge visual enhancements and stunning performance capture by an all-star cast.
  • Discover new collectibles, interactions, and all-new areas as you survive the night and unravel the mystery.
  • Bring the horror to life in your hands through haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on the DualSense wireless controller.
  • Enjoy a brand-new third-person camera, movie-like cinematography, musical score, and reauthored audio design that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat.

“Branching” does not mean that every scene becomes an entirely different game. A choice may change a relationship, determine who is present in a later scene, alter the information you have, or redirect the immediate danger. The practical question is therefore not simply whether a game has choices, but whether you prefer a single-night ensemble thriller, a group-voted camp story, or a season-spanning character narrative.

Until Dawn: the cinematic slasher choice

Setting and tone

PlayStation describes Until Dawn as a branching narrative horror game centered on a group of characters whose fates are shaped by player decisions. Its identity is closest to a slasher film: an ensemble is placed in an isolated, dangerous situation, and the suspense comes from deciding what each person does when the next threat appears.

That framing makes the game a natural fit if you want a tightly presented cinematic experience rather than an episodic television-style structure. The official description emphasizes choice and consequence, so the core appeal is deciding under pressure while watching the group’s situation change.

Which release are you buying?

The original game was released for PlayStation 4. A rebuilt and enhanced version launched for PlayStation 5 and PC on October 4, 2024. PlayStation says the rebuilt release adds collectibles, environments and recut narrative sequences. Those additions make the edition important when you compare listings: a PS4 copy and the rebuilt PS5/PC release are not interchangeable labels.

Check the storefront entry for the exact platform before buying. A listing that says PS5 or PC refers to the rebuilt release; a PS4 listing refers to the original version. The available product description does not establish a general save-transfer promise between those releases, so do not assume that progress moves between them.

Can you play it with a group?

PlayStation Canada calls the game single-player, but also says people can enjoy it together as a cinematic group experience in which they make decisions collectively. In practical terms, one person operates the game while friends discuss and choose what happens next. That is different from a documented multiplayer campaign in which each participant controls a separate character.

Until Dawn (PS5)
  • When eight friends return to the isolated lodge where two of their group vanished a year prior, fear tightens its icy grip, and their mountain retreat descends into a nightmare with no escape.
  • Face your fears and determine who survives Until Dawn in this seminal horror classic, rebuilt and enhanced for PS5 consoles.
  • Create your own gripping tale as you control a group of unique characters portrayed by an all-star cast, including Hayden Panettiere, Brett Dalton, and more, and decide their fate through your choices. Through dynamic animations and nuanced facial-capture performances, learn what makes each character tick, and who among the group has what it takes to survive.
  • Discover new collectibles, all-new environments to investigate, and re-cut narrative sequences that deepen the mystery further. Through the DualSense wireless controller, interact with the world like never before, and get closer to the action with an all-new, immersive third-person camera. Plus, enjoy a brand-new musical score and reauthored audio that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the journey.

Choose Until Dawn for group viewing if you want a film-like slasher evening and are comfortable passing the controller or agreeing on one decision. Its group appeal is social decision-making around a single-player presentation.

The Quarry: teen horror with explicit voting modes

Camp setting and cast

2K presents The Quarry as a cinematic teen-horror narrative featuring nine camp counselors. Choices shape the story, so the central activity is again deciding what the characters say and do as the night develops. The camp setting gives it a different identity from the isolated ensemble premise of Until Dawn, even though both are cinematic horror games built around consequential decisions.

Platforms and launch information

The Quarry launched on June 10, 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC via Steam. Confirm the edition shown by your store, especially when playing with friends on different hardware. The launch-platform list does not by itself guarantee that every multiplayer mode is available across every version.

How the group modes work

2K’s support documentation describes local and online multiplayer options. One documented mode allows up to seven friends to vote on decisions. That is a specific voting arrangement, not a blanket claim that every participant controls a counselor continuously or that all modes work identically.

Before organizing a session, check the support information for your platform and edition and agree on how votes will be counted. If you want one person to play while everyone else advises, a voting mode may suit you. If you expect each participant to control a character in the same way as a traditional co-op action game, the documented description does not promise that experience.

Who should choose it?

Pick The Quarry when the camp-counselor premise appeals to you and shared decisions are a major reason to buy. It is the clearest choice of the three for a planned group session because 2K explicitly documents voting with friends. Still, treat the exact number and mode as edition-specific details to verify rather than assumptions that apply to every platform.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead: episodic choices with continuity

Why its structure feels different

Telltale’s The Walking Dead is an episodic, character-led story rather than a single cinematic night. The important decision may not be an immediate life-or-death reaction; it can be a conversation, an alliance or a judgment that changes how a later episode treats the protagonist and other characters.

That structure suits players who want to live with decisions over multiple seasons. The emotional effect comes from remembering what you chose and seeing a later episode acknowledge it, rather than from treating every branch as a separate one-night scenario.

Carrying decisions into later seasons

Skybound says decisions from earlier Telltale seasons can affect The Final Season. Depending on the release and save available to you, you can import an eligible local save or use an in-game Story Builder to select key prior decisions and establish a backstory.

The old online save-upload system is no longer active, according to Skybound’s support guidance. That means a player who relied on online synchronization should not expect that service to recreate a previous playthrough. The practical alternatives are an eligible local save or the Story Builder supplied by the relevant game.

The Definitive Series limitation

Edition naming matters especially here. Skybound states that saves from prior standalone releases cannot be imported into The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series. Saves created inside the Definitive Series can continue into its next season within that collection.

Therefore, “save transfer works” is incomplete advice. It works between seasons when the saves were created inside the Definitive Series, but an old standalone save is not a supported import into that collection. Skybound also documents Story Builder tools in A New Frontier and The Final Season, allowing you to recreate important backstory choices when a direct save is unavailable.

Who should choose it?

Choose this series if continuity across episodes and seasons matters more to you than a self-contained slasher setup. It is also the option that demands the most attention to edition and save management. Decide whether you are starting a standalone release, using the Definitive Series from the beginning, or reconstructing prior choices with Story Builder before you buy.

Decide by the kind of night you want

You want a slasher ensemble

Start with Until Dawn. PlayStation’s description puts the group and its branching fates at the center, and the rebuilt PS5/PC version adds presentation changes beyond the original PS4 release. Select it when the setting and cinematic slasher framing matter more than formal multiplayer features.

You want friends to vote

Start with The Quarry. Its camp-counselor story is designed around decisions, and 2K documents local and online modes, including a mode with up to seven friends voting. Confirm the mode for your platform before promising a particular group setup.

You want choices to echo across seasons

Start with Telltale’s The Walking Dead. Skybound documents ways for earlier decisions to affect The Final Season, either through eligible local saves or Story Builder. Buy the edition that matches how you intend to preserve or recreate your history.

You want a single-player story that still works socially

Both Until Dawn and The Quarry can work as group viewing, but the documented framing differs. PlayStation describes Until Dawn as single-player with collective decision-making around the screen, while 2K describes specific voting modes for The Quarry. Pick the former for a controller-passing cinematic session and the latter when formal votes are the priority.

Platform and edition checklist before purchase

  1. Identify your hardware. Until Dawn’s rebuilt release is for PS5 and PC, while the original is a PS4 game. The Quarry was launched for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC via Steam.
  2. Check the exact product name. For The Walking Dead, distinguish a standalone season from the Definitive Series; their save-import rules differ.
  3. Verify group features on your edition. For The Quarry, consult the current 2K support entry for the platform and mode you plan to use. Do not infer that local, online and voting options are identical.
  4. Plan your save source. If you want The Walking Dead choices to carry forward, keep an eligible local save or be ready to use Story Builder. Do not rely on the discontinued online upload service.
  5. Confirm current store details. Check whether the listing is physical or digital, the supported platform, regional availability and the current price at the time you buy. Those details can change independently of the games’ original launch information.

What the official information does—and does not—tell you

PlayStation, 2K and Skybound clearly document the games’ premises, platforms, group framing and save-continuity rules. They do not establish a universal ranking for which title is scariest, has the best writing, offers the most replay value or contains the most consequential branches. Those judgments depend on your tolerance for each horror style, your group and the way you play.

That distinction is useful when reading recommendations. A game can be the better match for your preferred setting or social format without being an objective winner. Treat the platform, edition and save qualifications as purchasing facts; treat the emotional impact of the horror and characters as personal preference.
