At the same time, major U.S. banks opened earnings season with year-over-year profit growth but mixed signals, including JPMorgan’s quarterly earnings miss against the analyst estimate cited by The Associated Press.
The market figures below are opening levels reported during the U.S. session, not closing results. Both the technology-stock decline and the bank reaction could change materially later in the day.

| Index | Opening move | Opening level |
|---|---|---|
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | +242.4 points (+0.47%) | 52,092.99 |

Why chip stocks remained under pressure
Investors are reassessing the AI spending cycle
A market wrap carried by SWI swissinfo.ch said the semiconductor selloff continued for another day as investors reassessed whether AI investment can be sustained. The concerns included AI-safety issues and signs that some projects may face funding strain. The same report noted that strong corporate earnings could still support the wider market, showing why the session’s explanation was not simply that demand for chips had disappeared.
Chinese competition added a new concern
Reuters reported that progress by Chinese memory-chip maker CXMT fueled worries about competition from Chinese AI companies. Investors were also concerned about heavy market concentration and whether AI spending would generate returns soon enough to justify current valuations and capital commitments.

Those are reported investor concerns and market explanations, not proof that one event caused every semiconductor share to decline. Chip prices can also move for company-specific reasons, but the reports characterized this move as part of a continuing sector selloff rather than an isolated single-company incident.

What the first bank results showed
JPMorgan: profit up, earnings below the cited estimate
JPMorgan reported third-quarter 2026 profit of $15.3 billion, or $5.57 per share. A year earlier, it earned $14.4 billion, or $5.07 per share. The profit and per-share figure therefore increased year over year, but AP cited an analyst expectation of $5.93 per share. On that comparison, the reported $5.57 was a miss.
| JPMorgan third quarter | 2026 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Net profit | $15.3 billion | $14.4 billion |
| Earnings per share | $5.57 | $5.07 |
| Analyst expectation cited by AP | $5.93 | not stated |
Other large banks also reported higher annual profits
AP said Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs, as well as JPMorgan, reported profits higher than in the same period a year earlier. The reports were not an all-clear for the sector. AP also described warnings from the banks about the longer-run effects of higher interest rates and the possibility that persistent price increases could hurt consumers if inflation is not brought under control. The institutions did not necessarily make identical statements; the warnings were reported across the opening group of results.
How to read the two signals together
The session combined two different tests of investor confidence. Semiconductor prices reflected questions about the scale, funding and eventual payoff of AI infrastructure spending, along with competition concerns. Bank earnings offered evidence of current profitability, but JPMorgan’s shortfall against the cited expectation and management commentary kept the signal from being uniformly positive.

The Dow’s gain alongside declines in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also shows why a single headline such as “the market rose” or “the market fell” would be incomplete. The opening moves captured different sector exposures: technology weakness weighed on the Nasdaq, while financial stocks helped the Dow hold higher.
What is not established yet
- The opening figures do not show where the indexes finished on Oct. 13.
- One session does not establish a lasting reversal for semiconductor or bank shares.
- The reported AI, competition and valuation concerns describe investor thinking; they do not prove that every chip company faces the same outlook.
- Higher bank profits do not remove the consumer and inflation risks mentioned in the earnings coverage.
For now, the evidence is a time-bounded snapshot: chip selling continued as AI-return expectations and Chinese competition came under scrutiny, while the first major bank reports paired profit growth with an earnings miss at JPMorgan and caution about rates and inflation. Subsequent trading, additional bank results and new economic data will determine whether these opening signals persist.
