A 2025 laboratory study reports a photothermal process that extracts water from simulated lunar soil and uses it in carbon-dioxide conversion. The described products include oxygen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide—useful chemicals for future lunar resource use, but not proof that researchers made finished rocket fuel or operated a production system on the Moon.
What did the researchers demonstrate?
The study, “Inherent lunar water enabled photothermal CO₂ catalysis,” was published in Joule on July 16, 2025. Its central idea is to combine two steps: extracting H₂O from lunar-soil simulant, then using photothermal catalysis to convert CO₂. The journal summary identifies oxygen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide among the products.

The feed material was simulated Chang’e lunar soil, not a supply of dust processed on the Moon. The available study summary does not establish an integrated test using actual returned lunar samples or a working lunar plant. It supports a laboratory feasibility result and a possible route for future in-situ resource utilization, not a deployed system. Read the Joule study.

Does this mean the team made rocket fuel?
Not finished rocket propellant. Hydrogen and oxygen can be relevant to propellant production, while carbon monoxide is a chemical feedstock; however, the study description does not say that the team produced a flight-ready fuel, demonstrated a complete propellant system, or made fuel at lunar scale. “Rocket fuel” is best understood as a prospective application of useful products, not as the result already achieved.

How this work differs from other lunar-soil experiments
Several research efforts explore using lunar material, but they use different processes and report different outcomes. Their results should not be combined as if they were measurements from the 2025 photothermal study.
| Work | Process and material | Reported result | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Joule study | Photothermal water extraction and CO₂ catalysis using simulated Chang’e lunar soil. | Oxygen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide are named in the study summary; a production rate or efficiency is not stated in the available summary. | Laboratory investigation with simulant; not a lunar deployment. |
| NASA Carbothermal Reduction Demonstration, reported in 2023 | Carbothermal reduction of simulated lunar soil in a vacuum chamber, heated by a high-powered laser. | NASA reported extracting oxygen and detecting carbon monoxide. | A separate vacuum-chamber demonstration, not the Joule photothermal process. |
| 2023 National Science Review paper | Electrocatalytic CO₂ conversion using copper-loaded lunar-soil material. | The paper reports methane and oxygen. Its figures—72.05% methane Faradaic efficiency, 0.8 mL/min methane at 600 mA/cm², and 2.3 mL/min oxygen—belong to this separate study. | A distinct electrocatalytic experiment; its output figures are not results from the 2025 Joule paper. |
| 2025 ACS Materials Letters paper | Joule heating to process lunar-soil minerals for water electrolysis, using commercial lunar-soil simulants in experimental preparation. | The cited study concerns water electrolysis; the available source summary does not state a comparable output figure here. | Another separate laboratory approach, not the target photothermal CO₂ study. |
What remains unknown about practical use?
The available summary for the Joule paper does not provide a verifiable production rate, efficiency or mass yield. Without those measurements, readers cannot use it to estimate how much soil or energy would be needed to supply a mission, or compare the process quantitatively with other systems.

Laboratory work with simulant also does not establish how a process would perform with lunar soil in its natural environment or under the constraints of a lunar installation. The researchers themselves noted that development, deployment and operation involve technical hurdles and significant costs, which must be overcome for sustainable lunar water use and exploration. Cell Press’s July 16, 2025 release describes the study and its authors’ comments.
Why the result matters
Transporting every resource from Earth is a major constraint on sustained exploration. A process that could extract water and produce useful chemicals from local material may eventually help support lunar missions. This study is a step toward that possibility: it connects water extraction from simulant with CO₂ conversion in one photothermal approach. Whether it can become an efficient, reliable system for use on the Moon remains an open engineering question.
