What is China’s RX1H electric helicopter?
RX1H is a two-seat, battery-electric helicopter developed under the lead of Shenyang Aerospace University’s Liaoning General Aviation Research Institute. The institute describes it as China’s first two-seat electric helicopter. That description is the project team’s claim; the announcement is not an independent assessment of the aircraft or its performance.

The institute reported that RX1H completed its first flight at 9 a.m. on September 6, 2025, at Faku Caihu Airport in Shenyang. According to its account, the aircraft hovered, made a 360-degree turn and performed forward, backward and lateral maneuvers. These are reported flight activities, not published independent test results.

The institute says the joint development effort lasted four years and addressed more than ten key technologies, including multidisciplinary design optimization, high-energy-density battery integration, electric drive systems and lightweight structures. Its announcement does not include underlying measurements or test data that would allow those technical claims to be independently evaluated.
Is RX1H certified or in passenger service?
The cited project announcement does not establish that RX1H has received airworthiness certification, entered production or begun passenger service. The institute said the team would continue optimizing the aircraft and work toward commercial operations, presenting those as future steps rather than completed milestones. A first flight demonstrates that a prototype has flown; it does not by itself establish readiness for routine or commercial operation.

What is known—and not known—about its capabilities?
The announcement identifies RX1H as a two-seat electric helicopter and describes some first-flight maneuvers, but it does not state the aircraft’s range, endurance, payload, battery capacity, noise level or cost. Those figures should not be inferred from specifications for other electric aircraft or from general industry averages.

The same review describes system-based methods as the main approach to safety design when flight-test data are absent. It compares electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft with conventional fuel aircraft across performance, noise and cost. Those comparison categories are useful for assessing future claims about RX1H, but the available project announcement does not provide figures for them.

RX1H is not China’s first reported manned electric-helicopter research flight. The National Development and Reform Commission reported that a research demonstrator at Shenyang Aerospace University flew on July 11, 2020. The institute’s team profile also refers to a domestic manned electric-helicopter first flight that year. The available material treats that earlier demonstrator as a separate aircraft and milestone, not an earlier flight of RX1H.

Nor should RX1H be confused with the DF3000 “Youlong,” a separate hybrid eVTOL project reported by Tsinghua University in 2026. Tsinghua says its institute contributed technology to the 3-ton-class aircraft, which made a first flight in hybrid mode in May 2026. DF3000 uses distributed electric propulsion with series-hybrid generation; it is not the battery-electric RX1H helicopter.

When comparing electric aircraft, the configuration and energy system matter: a conventional helicopter, multirotor and tiltrotor eVTOL are not interchangeable designs, and battery-electric aircraft differ from hybrid ones. Meaningful comparisons also depend on mission, payload, range and endurance, acoustic performance, flight-control and fault-tolerance approaches, and certification status. For RX1H, most of those aircraft-specific figures and statuses have not been established in the cited project announcement.
