China’s rocket most often described as a Starship look-alike is Long March 9, a planned super-heavy launch vehicle. A U.S. House committee hearing charter describes an updated concept as methane-fueled and fully reusable, and visually similar to SpaceX’s Starship. That makes “clone” headline shorthand for a reported design resemblance—not evidence that China copied SpaceX or that the two vehicles have matching capabilities.
What is China’s Starship-like rocket called?
It is Long March 9, a planned vehicle associated with China’s state aerospace sector. The House Science, Space, and Technology Committee’s hearing charter says the rocket’s architecture shifted from an expendable design with four boosters to an updated concept described as fully reusable and methane-fueled. The charter also characterizes it as visually similar to Starship. These are descriptions of a developing program, not proof of a flown design or a direct copy. The committee charter frames Long March 9’s intended work as deep-space missions and large-scale infrastructure deployment.

How does the concept compare with SpaceX’s Starship?
SpaceX describes Starship as the combined Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket: a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. That is the company’s statement of intended role, not a like-for-like performance comparison with Long March 9.

|---|---|---|
| Architecture described | The committee charter describes an updated, methane-fueled, fully reusable concept. | SpaceX calls Starship and Super Heavy a fully reusable transportation system. |
| Stated purpose | Deep-space missions and large-scale infrastructure deployment, according to the committee charter. | Crew and cargo transport to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond, according to SpaceX. |
| Demonstrated status in the cited material | No Long March 9 flight or recovery demonstration is reported. | SpaceX’s vehicle page describes the system’s design and intended role; it is not used here to establish a particular flight milestone. |
| Schedule and payload | No confirmed flight date or payload figure is established in the cited material. Ars Technica reported a possible debut in the 2030s. | No directly comparable payload figure is established by the cited official page. |
SpaceX’s description appears on its official Starship page. The comparison is therefore uneven: Starship has a company-published system description, while the Long March 9 details here come from a committee charter summarizing a developing Chinese program. Similar architecture labels do not establish equal payload, cost, maturity, or reusability in practice.

- A COMPLETE LAUNCH-PAD SCENE: This starship model adds a tower, capture arms and storage-tank details around the rocket for a more immersive desktop display.
- MIST AND RED LIGHT IGNITION EFFECT: The built-in humidifier and LEDs work together beneath the rocket to simulate a dramatic launch plume without heat or propulsion.
- SIMPLE RESERVOIR CARE: The integrated water system is straightforward to operate; refill as needed and wipe the atomizing plate regularly to limit mineral buildup.
- HIGH-DETAIL 3D-PRINTED STRUCTURE: Contrasting silver, black and white components make the launch system easy to examine from multiple angles in offices, classrooms and exhibits.
- A DISPLAY GIFT FOR SPACE ENTHUSIASTS: Suited to adult collectors, engineers and students; place on a stable surface and handle the fine tower and arm details carefully.
What has China actually demonstrated with reusable rockets?
China has made progress with other vehicles, but those milestones should not be attributed to Long March 9. LandSpace’s Zhuque-3 is a separate, smaller commercial rocket. In an August 19, 2026 report, China’s National Space Administration said Zhuque-3 Y2 launched and its first stage completed a land recovery. CNSA’s Chinese account says: “2026年8月19日7时35分,朱雀三号遥二运载火箭在东风商业航天创新试验区发射升空,7时41分,火箭一子级按预定程序成功完成陆地回收,飞行任务取得圆满成功。” Translation: “At 7:35 on August 19, 2026, the Zhuque-3 Y2 launch vehicle lifted off from the Dongfeng Commercial Space Innovation Pilot Zone; at 7:41, its first stage successfully completed land recovery according to plan, and the flight mission was a complete success.” This is evidence about Zhuque-3, not Long March 9. CNSA’s mission report also identifies Zhuque-3 as a LandSpace-developed liquid-oxygen/methane reusable rocket.
Earlier attempts were less successful. Ars Technica reported in December 2025 that Zhuque-3 and Long March 12A had reached orbit on their first flights that month but failed to recover their boosters. The report distinguishes those nearer-term vehicles from Long March 9, which it said could debut in the 2030s. That timing is a reported possibility, not a confirmed launch schedule. Ars Technica’s account does not establish that Long March 9 has flown.

What remains unknown about Long March 9?
The cited material does not establish a confirmed payload capacity, a settled launch date, or an actual Long March 9 flight or recovery. Without matched, confirmed specifications for the current Starship configuration and Long March 9, claims that one is more powerful, cheaper, or more capable are not supported by this comparison.
China’s wider launch sector provides context, not a substitute for vehicle-specific evidence. MERICS’s February 2026 report describes reusability as a way to lower launch costs and increase flight frequency, and gives sector-level cost estimates: CNY 150,000 (about USD 21,000) per kilogram for Chinese launch costs, USD 2,700–3,000 per kilogram for Falcon 9, and a projected USD 13–32 per kilogram for Starship. These are broad comparative estimates, not observed Long March 9 prices; the Starship figure is a projection. MERICS also counts 49 Chinese rocket companies in 2019, including eight state-owned enterprises, compared with 35 in July 2025, including three state-owned enterprises. Those counts describe the sector, not launch capability. MERICS’s report supplies this context but does not settle Long March 9’s performance or economics.

What would show whether it is more than a look-alike?
The meaningful test is whether Long March 9 proceeds from a described architecture to flight hardware and demonstrated operations. A launch, successful stage recovery, and repeatable reuse would provide evidence that renderings and design descriptions cannot. Until then, “Starship-like” describes the reported concept; it does not establish a Starship equivalent.
