China has become a net chicken exporter while dairy shipments are approaching record levels, turning excess domestic production into a fast-growing overseas business. Customs data cited in a Reuters report published October 15, 2026, put Chinese chicken exports at about $2.6 billion in the latest year—almost twice the 2020 value. Trade data cited in the same report indicate dairy exports could reach $600 million in 2026, double the level of three years earlier.
Why China is exporting more food
The export push is the result of a mismatch between expanded production and changing consumption at home. Producers built farms, slaughterhouses and processing lines after the 2018 African swine-fever outbreak and during the Covid-19 period, when food-security policy encouraged additional domestic capacity. Output continued rising even as economic growth slowed, demand weakened and China’s population began to shrink.

Dietary change has made the imbalance sharper. Official data and Chinese state media reported that pork consumption was 13% below its 2023 peak, while chicken intake per person rose by more than 50% in the decade through 2024. Chicken uses less feed and is often positioned as a leaner alternative to fatty pork, making it a natural beneficiary of that shift. Excess production that cannot be absorbed domestically is therefore being directed to foreign buyers.
The price advantage behind the sales
Chinese suppliers are winning orders primarily on price. Traders and company executives cited in the Reuters report said Chinese breast meat and leg quarters were 10% to 20% cheaper than Brazilian products. Wintop Food general manager Dang Yangyang described an advantage of about $1,000 per tonne against Brazilian and Thai competitors. He said buyers that once distrusted Chinese quality now face a choice between purchasing from China and losing their own cost advantage.

The low prices reflect scale, dense processing capacity and a short production cycle, but they are not evidence that every Chinese agricultural product is cheaper or oversupplied. Agriculture and food still produced a Chinese trade deficit of slightly more than $100 billion in the prior year, although the gap was shrinking.

Wintop’s high-volume model
Shandong-based Wintop Food processes about 60 million chickens annually into breasts, nuggets, meatballs and dumplings for customers in more than 20 countries. Exports supplied half of its profits last year and are funding a 33-acre expansion. Over roughly a decade, the company increased the number of birds per shed from 20,000 to 120,000. Its birds average 2.5 kilograms and are slaughtered in fewer than 42 days.
Moving beyond frozen commodity meat
Sunner is pursuing marinated chicken and ready meals, products that can earn more than unprocessed cuts. Its overseas sales rose 42% to $135 million last year, according to the report. The company is also developing production capacity with local partners, including in Uzbekistan, rather than relying exclusively on shipments from China.

Processed and ready-to-eat products matter because they let exporters use more of each bird and reduce dependence on a single commodity price. They also bring stricter requirements for recipes, labeling, cold-chain management and destination-country approvals.

Subsidies and the capacity problem
Government support has helped producers maintain and expand capacity. The OECD estimated that subsidies represented about 13% of Chinese agricultural producers’ gross farm receipts in 2022–2024, nearly three times the proportion recorded in the early 2000s. That support is not limited to exporters, but it can lower the cost base of companies seeking overseas orders and prolong production during weak domestic demand.
The result is a model in which large firms can keep plants running, spread fixed costs over enormous volumes and use export revenue to finance further expansion. Yili baby-formula marketing executive Zhang Yuan summarized the ambition: Chinese livestock companies that want to grow increasingly see overseas markets as necessary.

Why competitors and regulators are concerned
Food safety and consistency
Price does not remove concerns about safety, traceability or taste. Gordon Butland of G&S Agriconsultants said exporters need to establish lasting confidence in all three. Some buyers continue to prefer Thai poultry because they regard its taste and quality as more consistent. For Chinese suppliers, winning a trial order is easier than securing a durable, repeat contract if documentation, specifications or product quality vary.
Trade defenses and origin rules
The European Commission has opened an anti-dumping investigation into Peking duck imports and imposed duties of 41% to 67% on Chinese pea protein. The EU also plans stronger origin labeling for poultry from 2027. Imported food must meet the bloc’s health and safety requirements, but compliance costs and a clearer country-of-origin label can still affect purchasing decisions.

These measures illustrate the political risk of a price-led export surge. Thailand’s broiler exporters’ association manager Kukrit Arepagorn said customers increasingly use cheap Chinese chicken as a negotiating reference, putting pressure on established suppliers even when they do not switch vendors.
What determines whether the boom lasts
- Cost per tonne: China’s reported 10%–20% price gap, and Wintop’s cited $1,000-per-tonne advantage, attract buyers but can narrow if feed, labor, freight or compliance costs rise.
- Value-added mix: Marinated products, nuggets, dumplings and ready meals offer better margins than undifferentiated frozen cuts.
- Market access: Exporters need veterinary approvals, reliable cold chains and local partners in each destination.
- Trust: Traceability records, consistent specifications and transparent safety controls determine repeat business.
- Trade policy: Anti-dumping cases, tariffs and origin labeling can quickly erase a freight-adjusted price advantage.
Michael Boddington, a Beijing-based agribusiness consultant, described China’s move from major food buyer to emerging exporter as disruptive for global meat markets. The scale of new capacity means the effect is likely to persist, but the final outcome will depend on whether Chinese companies can convert low prices into trusted, compliant and higher-value supply rather than simply exporting a temporary surplus.
