China’s EAST fusion experiment sustained high-confinement plasma for 1,066 seconds in January 2025, a record for that operating state. The result shows progress in keeping experimental plasma stable; it does not show that EAST generated electricity, achieved net energy gain, or is ready to power homes. The superconducting magnets are part of the confinement system, not a shortcut to unlimited energy.

What did China’s EAST experiment achieve?

On January 20, 2025, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) sustained steady-state high-confinement plasma operation for 1,066 seconds, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). CAS described it as a world record for this type of operation. EAST’s previous record was 403 seconds, set in 2023.

The number is a duration: how long EAST maintained the reported plasma operating state. It is not 1,066 seconds of electricity generation. The CAS account says EAST’s systems were upgraded between experimental rounds. Gong Xianzu, head of EAST’s Physics and Experimental Operations division, said its heating system “has now doubled its power output while also maintaining stability and continuity.” That describes the heating system, not electricity delivered by the facility.

What is EAST, and what do its magnets do?

EAST is a fully superconducting experimental tokamak in Hefei, Anhui Province, operated by the Institute of Plasma Physics under CAS. A tokamak uses magnetic fields to confine hot plasma for fusion research. CAS describes EAST as the world’s first non-circular cross-section fully superconducting tokamak designed and built independently by China. Its experiments are intended to provide experience for international ITER and China’s planned Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR), as outlined in the CAS EAST facility profile.

The phrase “giant magnet” can suggest that one magnet alone produces energy. That is not what the EAST result establishes: its superconducting tokamak system supports magnetic confinement, while the reported achievement concerns sustained plasma operation. The available EAST milestone report does not provide a technical breakdown of a particular magnet’s configuration or performance.

Why a longer plasma run is not the same as a fusion power plant

A duration record is one measure of experimental progress, but a power plant must do more than hold plasma for a long time. CAS says fusion electricity requires temperatures above 100 million degrees Celsius, stable long-term operation, and control. In the January 2025 report, CAS did not state EAST’s total energy input, fusion output, or net energy balance for this run. It therefore does not establish that EAST achieved net energy gain or produced electricity for the grid.

Song Yuntao, director of the Institute of Plasma Physics under CAS, described the gap: “A fusion device must achieve stable operation at high efficiency for thousands of seconds to enable the self-sustaining circulation of plasma, which is critical for the continuous power generation of future fusion plants.” EAST’s 1,066-second result is a research milestone toward that broader goal, not proof that the goal has been reached.

How EAST’s record differs from China’s next stated target

EAST’s reported result and China’s future power-generation ambition concern different facilities and different achievements. CAS reported in January 2026 that the separate Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak (BEST) was under construction and designed to demonstrate net fusion power gain and fusion-based electricity generation around 2030. That is BEST’s stated target, not an outcome already achieved or a guaranteed deadline. CAS’s announcement is available at “China Accelerates Nuclear Fusion Engineering, Targeting Power Generation Demonstration by 2030”.

Does the result mean fusion is unlimited clean energy?

No. “Unlimited” is promotional shorthand, not a property demonstrated by EAST or a quantified energy supply in these reports. The experiment supports the case that researchers are making progress on sustained plasma operation, but it does not establish a working power plant, net electricity, commercial readiness, or a date when fusion power will be available to consumers.

Keep facility-specific claims separate as well. For example, a Chinese government report on another facility, HL-3, discussed temperatures above 100 million degrees Celsius; those are not EAST measurements. EAST’s January 2025 record is specifically about duration of high-confinement plasma operation.
