ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is moving from years of losses into projected profit because an AI-driven DRAM shortage lifted memory prices. Reuters reported first-half 2026 revenue guidance of 110–120 billion yuan and net profit of 66–75 billion yuan, while first-quarter revenue reached 50.8 billion yuan, up 719% from a year earlier.
What changed at CXMT
CXMT, founded in Hefei and backed by China’s semiconductor self-sufficiency drive, benefited from the sharp upswing in DRAM pricing. Reuters said the company had erased a decade of losses in six months as it raised prices to major customers, including Huawei.

The figures combine one reported quarter with a company forecast for the first half of 2026. That distinction matters: the 50.8 billion yuan figure is reported first-quarter revenue, while the 66–75 billion yuan profit range is a prospectus projection rather than a completed six-month result.

The projected profit reverses a loss in the year-earlier period. CXMT’s rapid improvement therefore reflects both much higher sales and the unusually powerful effect of selling-price changes in a memory business with large fixed manufacturing costs.

Why DRAM prices rose
DRAM is the working memory used in AI servers as well as cars, smartphones and personal computers. AI systems require substantial memory capacity, and data-center operators have been buying aggressively as they expand computing infrastructure.
At the same time, leading memory suppliers have been directing more production toward higher-value AI memory. That allocation leaves less conventional DRAM for other buyers, tightening supply and giving manufacturers room to increase prices. Reuters reported that CXMT had been raising prices amid those conditions; the resulting improvement in revenue and margins explains how a company with years of accumulated losses could turn profitable quickly.
The cycle is not driven by AI alone. Conventional DRAM demand still depends on PC, mobile and automotive shipments, so a change in any of those markets can alter the balance between supply and demand. AI demand has tightened the market, but it does not eliminate the memory industry’s normal boom-and-bust pattern.

CXMT’s position in the memory market
Reuters described CXMT as the world’s fourth-biggest memory maker, and TrendForce’s coverage of its 2026 listing placed it fourth among DRAM suppliers by first-quarter revenue. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron remained the dominant suppliers ahead of it.
- Scale: CXMT is no longer a marginal Chinese producer; its reported revenue places it among the four largest DRAM suppliers.
- Product direction: Its stated expansion plan emphasizes conventional DRAM output and process capability. TrendForce’s summary of the IPO plan did not identify a high-bandwidth-memory (HBM) project among the named uses of proceeds.
- Strategic role: The company supports China’s effort to build a domestic memory supply chain while operating under the pressure of U.S. semiconductor export controls.
- Competitive gap: Being fourth by revenue does not put CXMT on equal footing with the three leaders in every process generation, product category, customer relationship or equipment-access measure. The available figures do not establish market-share percentages or a direct HBM performance comparison.
“CXMT plays a critical role in China’s AI push, particularly in the face of U.S. export controls,” Brookings Institution fellow Kyle Chan said in comments quoted by the Associated Press.
What the July 2026 IPO is funding
CXMT’s Shanghai STAR Market offering raised at least 57.9 billion yuan in July 2026. TrendForce’s summary of the prospectus identified three major spending categories:
Rank #3
- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 overclocking desktop memory RAM kit (2x16GB) that operates at 6000MHz to improve gaming, multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—benefit from lower latency for higher frame rates, perfect for AAA games
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Compatible 13th gen intel core CPUs or newer AMD Ryzen 9000 series CPus
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- Top-Tier Overclocking: 32GB of DDR5 RAM 32GB, 6000MHz at extended timings of 36-38-38-80 provide stable overclocking performance and lower latency compared to usual Crucial Pro Series DRAM modules
| Use of proceeds | Amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Memory-wafer production-line upgrades | 7.5 billion yuan | Upgrade wafer manufacturing lines |
| DRAM technology-upgrade project | 13 billion yuan | Improve DRAM process technology |
| Forward-looking technology research and development | 9 billion yuan | Fund future technology work |
Those named projects total 29.5 billion yuan. They show a strategy focused on adding and improving conventional DRAM capacity while the market is profitable. Raising capital at the top of the cycle can accelerate CXMT’s expansion, but it also means the company could bring more supply online just as prices weaken.
Is CXMT a threat to Samsung, SK hynix and Micron?
CXMT is a more significant competitor than its earlier financial results suggested, especially in China and in standard DRAM. A 719% year-over-year revenue increase gives it more cash to invest, and the IPO provides additional funding for lines, process upgrades and research.
That does not mean an immediate displacement of the three established leaders. Their global scale, customer qualification, product breadth and experience supplying advanced memory remain important advantages. CXMT’s disclosed investment plan is centered on conventional DRAM, and the named projects do not establish that it has matched the leaders in HBM or other specialized AI-memory products.

The more immediate competitive effect is on supply and pricing. If CXMT expands conventional DRAM output successfully, buyers could gain another major source of chips and the market could become more price-competitive. Conversely, if supply remains tight, CXMT can continue benefiting from elevated prices while it builds capacity.
Could the profit disappear?
Yes. CXMT’s own prospectus warning, as summarized by Reuters, identifies two central risks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Slower AI investment: If data-center companies reduce or postpone AI infrastructure spending, memory demand could weaken.
- Excess industry capacity: If CXMT or other manufacturers add too much output, DRAM prices and profit margins could fall rapidly.
Memory earnings are highly sensitive to selling prices, factory utilization and product mix. A manufacturer can report spectacular growth during a shortage and then see profits contract when inventories build or customers cut orders. CXMT’s IPO makes it better equipped to invest through the current upcycle, but the same expansion increases its exposure to the next downturn.
What to watch next
The key test is whether CXMT can convert unusually high prices into durable gains in technology, yield and customer share. Investors and industry customers should separate finalized financial statements from prospectus forecasts, track conventional DRAM prices alongside AI-memory demand, and watch whether new capacity arrives faster than the market can absorb it.
For now, CXMT’s turnaround is best understood as a powerful cyclical recovery amplified by AI demand—not proof that memory prices will remain high or that the company has overtaken the established leaders in every segment.
